Hugh rian Hward This year Kristie Chadick at- tended the Hugh 0'Brian Youth Foundation or HOB Y seminar on May 8-10, I98Z at the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock. This week- end seminar challenged Kristie to develop a better understanding of the United States free enterprise system and the functions of the business world and the political system. Because she was chosen to represent England at HOBIC she received an outstanding Soph- omore of the Year Award. In December, 1982 Mrs. Hill's class participated in the Special Olympics Bo wl- ing Tournament held at the Professor Bowl in Little Rock. The students were divided into four age groups with all participating students winning a blue ribbon. Also the students will participate in other Special Olympic events in the spring. ' pcot The Arkansas State Standards for Education mandated every school district in the state to develop a plan to serve those students who are identified as gifted and talented. The England School District began its development process of gifted program in 1985 An Advisory Council was formed, and this committee developed a philosophy, goals, and all documents that are used in the due process selection of GX T students. This Advisory Council also named England 's Promising Citizens of Tomorrow. The identification pro- cess includes parents, teachers, and students. All identiHed students are to be served 150 minutes per week. Elementary students are served through a resource room- the EPCOT Center. Secondary students are served through 7th-9th grade seminars, AP English I IC Honors English I and II, and history classes. Students in EPCOT classes are given instruction in critical and creative thinking skills, research skills, affective education, and problem solving and reasoning skills. A differentiated curriculum is encouraged in the regular classroom. pecial lgmpics Front row, I to r: Jerry Castleberry, Melissa Rogers, Greg Jones, Elbert Giles, Ashley Cates.
