I ? 7 bats Btate For God and Country that is the motto for the 45th session of the Arkansas Girls' State. Sheila Kearney, Karol Ezell, and Ash- ley Godsey represented England High School at Quachita Baptist University on June 7th, through the 12th. During their stay, they met new friends, learned about the government and its functions, and made a special trip to the Capitol. Rational merit Eemifinalist This year Karol Ezell was a semi-finalist in the National Merit Competition. To become a semi- finalist, a senior must have a high score on the national PSAT test, which ranks himfher in the top IZ of the states' senior classes. Karol also participated in a program called Middle South Utilities: Summer Leadership Institute, on June 17-22 at OBU. She earned three college hours for this course and all expenses paid. Karol also had the opportunity to attend the AEGIS Summer Sci- ence Institute: Chemistry Institute. She had one week of advanced study under professors at UALR and was given the chance to experiment with chemicals and specialized equipment on an ad- vanced level. Bags State Boys' State is a six day training course to study for the practical application of problems in self- government. It is not meant to take the place ofa course of ci vics or government taught in high schools throughout the state, but is planned so that boys may put into practice the theories of Ameri- can government through operation of the city, country, and state offices as organized under the plans of Boys' State. This year Adam Henderson and Dan Roberts attended Boys' State at UCA from June 5-13. Wsittential ttlassraom What is Presidential Classroom? It is a pro- gram which offers outstanding high school ju- niors and seniors nationwide and worldwide a firsthand look at the federal government in ac- tion. These students visit Capitol Hill and meet with their senators and representatives, as well as, congressional advisers who discuss national and local issues. Also the students express their ideas throughout the week in lively discussion 5. This year Melanie Douglas, a senior, traveled to Washington, D.C, to participate in this pro- gram.
