daring fighter, superbly ready for combat, ENGLAND has achieved an outstanding record of success, reflecting the highest credit upon her gallant officers and men and the United States Naval Service. On 9 May 1945, during the Okinawa Campaign ENGLAND was attacked and severely damaged by a kamikaze plane. ENGLAND was decommissioned ON 15 October 1945, and stricken from the Naval Registry on 1 November 1945. The spirit of USS ENGLAND QDE-6351 was reborn on 7 December 1963, the twenty-third anniversary of the death of the ship's namesake, Ensign john Charles England, when the second USS ENGLAND QDLG-221 was commissioned by Mrs. Clair Engle at Todd Shipyard Corporation, San Pedro, CA. The ship's crest carries on the tradition of both Ensign ENGLAND and the first USS ENGLAND. The central red and gray portion of the crest is taken from the coat of arms of the ENGLAND family and the six white stars on the outlining blue field represent the six japanese submarines sunk by the original ENGLAND. ENGLAND has a length of 533 feet, a beam of 54 feet, a full load displacement exceeding 8160 tons and can reach speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship is equipped with Terrier guided missiles, anti-submarine rocket torpedoes CASROCJ, Harpoon surface to surface missiles, two 20-MM Close-ln Weapons Systems CCIWSJ, and two triple tube torpedo launchers. Her extended range sonar provides early detection and engagement of hostile submarines and her computer- ized Naval Tactical Data System QNTDSJ coupled with radar guided missiles, presents a formidable threat to attacking aircraft and hostile ships. From April 1970, to june 1971, ENGLAND underwent an extensive modernization and rebuilding program at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. ENGLAND was redesignated CG-22 on 1 july 1975, to reflect her status as a major warship in today's Navy. An extensive overhaul and further update took place from january 1980 to April 1981. Her present configuration and modern weaponry reflect the latest Naval Technology and presents a powerful peacekeeping addition to the United States Navy. Homeported in San Diego, CA., ENGLAND has completed numerous deployments to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean areas. She is part of Pacific Fleet's Naval Surface Forces and serves as a unit of Cruiser-Destroyer Group Five. ENGLAND has been awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment ribbon with one bronze star, Vietnam Service Medal and currently holds the following Departmental awards for Excellence: Operations E QSEVENTHCONSECUTIVE AWARDJ, WEAPONS E QFOURTH CONSECUTIVE AWARDI, COMMUNICATIONS C CSECOND CON- SECUTIVE AWARDJ, ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE A QTHIRD CONSECUTIVEJ and ELECTRONIC WARFARE EW. This cruisebook could more aptly be entitled crew's book, for it is men that make the ENGLAND and ENGLAND history. The 1982 Deployment is but another chapter in the ENGLAND STORY. as N fs, .
