During the three short years spent at Enfield High School, we, the Class of 1974, have learned the true meaning of the word strength. Gaining guidance and a sense of understanding from faculty members, it was a feasible goal to touch upon and one that helped us grow in the process. Together we sought a motive for our lives and as formal education draws to a close, we find ourselves fulfilled and triumphant. Strength cannot be measured by one individual. It is the joint effort of seri- ous people who mature together by learning as one. With strength comes the wisdom of experience, and the awareness of the debt we owe to those who have brought us this far. There is no time like the present to prepare ourselves for the responsibilities into which we are entering. The future does not belong to those who are satisfied with today and who frequently scan their yesterdays. It is for the bold, the wise, and the strong in spirit; for those who can mix passion, courage, and action into a committment to their world and fellow man. The Class of 1974 has a lot to offer, and we can make for ourselves a beautiful, satisfying tomorrow. Marilyn Cardone Elizabeth Ferraro 2 DEDICATION We, the class of 1974, came to Enfield High School three years ago. In these past few years, the student leaders of our class have been responsible for many constructive changes in the activities of our school. New ideas need direction. In order to utilize the strength of our class, we required guidance from understanding members of the faculty who were also ready for change and new ideas. Mr. Stephen Smith and Mr. Michael DeRose have been instru- mental in the success of all our class functions. It is therefore our privilege to dedicate the 1974 Echo to these two irreplaceable men. Anne Mullen 4 Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Smith and Stephen III Mr. Smith, how could we ever forget your tre- mendous help with our Misquamicut Beach trip? You brought us laughter and unforgettable memories with your slides and quiet wit. This is above and beyond what we expected. You have expanded the role of advisor and chaperone to that of a friend. We will always remember you for that. Mr. DeRose, you have shown yourself to be not only an ideal teacher, but a good sport as well (remember Slave Day and the baseball trip?) You have joined us in creating profitable and enter- taining school activities, which walk hand in hand with the importance of schoolwork. You have been a friend as well as an advisor. Thank you for enriching our years at Enfield High School. Mr. and Mrs. Michael DeRose 5 We were given strength in our childhood 6 7 8 if we were prepared. 9 Soon we must take and utilize the skills we have acquired. 91 We have been guided by the strong. With the purpose of earning money for the Booster Club as well as our class, the students and adults put together a new tradition for Enfield High School, The Raider Snack-Shack. 23 STEPHANIE BARBARA AIDUKONIS Steph April 221 aurus DIANE C. I am proud to have played a small role in providing you with an education upon which you can build a bright and fulfilling future. It is with mixed emotions that I say goodbye to you. I am sorry to see you leave Enfield High School, because the Class of 1974 is outstanding in many ways. At the same time I am happy for and even envy you, as you approach the truly exciting stage in life when you take your place in the complex and challenging adult socie- ty. With this transition, come new avenues leading to new goals, new achieve- ments and new challenges. I pray that the education and the realated experiences that you received during your high school career will provide the wisdom neces- sary for you to meet successfully all obstacles that you face as graduates. Please accept my most sincere wishes for continued success in all your endeav- ors. I will miss the Class of 1974, for you have been a credit to Enfield High School. Sincerely, Mr. Leo Yaconiello Principal J cbn nistmtion To the Class of 1974: DILIGENCE IS THE MOTHER OF GOOD FORTUNE Cervantes, Don Quixote Pt. 1, Ch. 46. MY SINCERE BEST WISHES IN YOUR FUTURE YEARS. Alan K. Tracy, Asst. Principal To the Senior Class: I wish you well on the commencement of your new life beyond Enfield High School. May this life experience surpass that success which you have known to this point in your lives. Being new to Enfield this year, I have been made to feel welcome at your school largely due to the pleasant atmo- sphere you have in great measure helped to create. I did not know many of you well, and Pm poorer for that. But I thank you for your legacy of good will since I hope I will be privi- leged to enjoy your school for many years to come. Bon Voyage, W. Guidance Mr. Stanley zuZel The Guidance Depatment has three guidance counse- lors: Miss Perdrizet, Mr. Hellstein, and Mr. zuZel. Addi- tionally, they have Mr. Cloutier as a Career Counselor. With mini-courses in our programs, there is a greater need than ever for counseling because of the increase in choices. To this end, we employ the counselors and the Careers Resource Room to expand on information. In a seven period day, some students are taking the oppor- tunity to do research for further education and careers there. The counselors work not only with our present school population, but also with past graduates, and par- ents. Their services are available from before school in the morning until beyond school hours in the afternoon. They are also working one week after school terminates and one week prior to school opening for consultations and program changes. Evenings are sometimes scheduled for parents unable to meet with counselors during their work days by school administrators. Mr. Richard Hellstein 70 Miss Ida Perdrizet Mr. Raymond Cloutier Library The library collection contains books, periodi- cals and pamphlets on all the school subjects from automobile mechanics to English drama. The reading interests of young people are re- flected in the great number of paperbacks and the many books on current social problems. Audio-visual materials, such as phonograph rec- ords, tapes and filmstrips, supplement the printed collection to make the library a true learning center. ,erT9ii5h , olepa riment: Mrs. Adian Doherty Mrs. Elizabeth Mullen, Department Head By continual evaluation of curriculum and constant search for variety of material, the Eng- lish Department seeks to respond to the needs of Enfield High School students. Mr. Chester Blair Mrs. Muriel Humphrey Mr. William Fogarty Miss Gail Darden Mrs. Linda Hoidalen Miss Susan Young Mr. John Talbot The 1973-1974 school year was one of continual attempts to pro- vide avenues for self-realization and self-fulfillment for students in Social Science classes. The Social Science curriculum has been de- signed to provide choices for students taking the Social Science classes. It is hopeful that their choices increase the possibility for all students to make some meaningful contact with society and its problems. Mrs. Helen Brill Social Studies Lab The basic philosophy of the lab is for learn- ing to come alive through the hands of the students. This is a place of innovative learn- ing. The students in the lab learn to work with teachers; they share ideas and help each oth- er with various projects. Students in the lab also teach teachers and other students to use photographic equipment, tape recorders, and all types of technical aides. Working in the Social Studies Lab is a real learning experience. Mrs. Patricia Bigos Mr. Frank Taylor Mr. Carl Gahm 75 The Business Department's curriculum offers comprehensive training in the basic skills needed for immediate entry in office and business relat- ed occupations. Opportunities are available for experiencing on-the-job training simultaneously with academic exposure in school. A Resource Center is available to the students which affords a conducive, yet informal, atmo- sphere in which to study and to experiment independently. 78 Miss Barbara Flebotte Department Head Mrs. Marilyn Sheck Mr. Stanley Tupek Mr. Robert Bromage Mr. Alfred Darrow Mr. Stephen Smith 79 Miss Patricia Bertone Mr. Edward Bassett m Mr. Michael Derose Mr. Martin Cole Mr. Kenneth St. George Scientific knowledge is increasingly important to all of us today. In recogni- tion of this, the Science Department continues to evaluate and incorporate changes in the science curriculum. Independent study is offered to interested and capable students. Two major firsts were realized for Enfield High this year. One was the initia- tion of a double-lab period for science classes; the other, was the start of the Cooperative Program for Superior High School Students with the University of Connecticut for college credit. Students enrolled in Advanced Chemistry were able to apply for acceptance to this program for college credit. The full year courses offered to the students are: Advanced Biology, Advanced Chemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, and Physics. The half year courses in- clude: Advanced Genetics, Anatomy Physiology, Astronomy 1 and Astrono- my 2, and Ecology. Mr. Michael Ricci re t Foreign Language The Foreign Language Department at Enfield High has continually encouraged students to study a foreign language not only to expand their knowledge of other cultures but also to improve their potential in the world of work. French, German and Spanish are taught in an approach that is audio-visual with emphasis on the sounds and grammar patterns of the spoken language. Latin also is presented in a dynamic manner with audio-visual materials that help the student develop a better cultural understanding of classical antiquity and its implications ti in the present. Mrs. Elaine Myotte This year has been one of growth for the Depart- ment of Family Living and Consumer Education. Greater numbers of students are finding the courses offered to be a vital part of their high school pro- grams, and many boys are now making contribu- tions in all areas In addition to enrollment increases in the areas of clothing and food, interior design, consumer education, and the Child Development and Human Relations courses have proved to be of special interest to students. The implementation of the nursery school laboratory has made the Child Development program more attractive. The Course provides a valuable experience in preparing for par- enthood and for vocational opportunities, the Hu- man Relations course helps students to analyze and clarify personal values and goals which influence their relationships with others. The success of the program indicates that student interests and needs are being met. Mrs. Christina McDonald, Department Head Miss Margaret Chamberlain This was a dynamic year in the Art Department. More courses gave the opportunity for more students to exercise their creative abilities. Student art work was continuously on exhibit throughout our building from the library to the shop wing giving pleasure to the entire student body and staff. It's obvious that the Art Depart- ment at Enfield High School is developing the .aesthetic expression of the individual in our con- temporary mechanized society. Mrs. Barbara Kemnitzer Mrs. Linda Tyler Miss Charlotte Yale 84 Mr. Newell Murri Industrial Arts Mr. Chester Thompson The program in Industrial Education offers students an opportunity to explore and become acclimated to modern industrial techniques. Occupational skills, consumer knowledge and leisure time are an integral part of curriculum offerings. The courses include Home Mechanics, Automotive Maintenance, Electricity and Electronics, Technical Drawing, Architectural Drafting, and Material Process- ing, Wood Technology, and Metal Technology. Mr. Valentine Kropiwnicki Mr. George Rypysc Mr. William Noyes Mr. Charles Hryniewicz Mr. Leonard DeMaio The Music Department of Enfield High School encompasses three areas of specialization: instrumental, classroom and vocal music. The instrumental area, under the direction of Mr. Dana Hawes, includes the marching and concert bands, as well as a string ensemble and individual instrumental study. Several members of our band have continued their pur- suit of a career in music, both in military musical organizations and in solo or group performances. We at Enfield High School could always depend upon our musicians to get us into the spirit of things, either at athletic events or during the holiday seasons. The classroom curriculum is aimed to accomodate three different kinds of students: the general student, who may include the History of American Music (Music II) or Electronic Music in his studies; the college bound liber- al arts and elementary education majors and the music minor, who would find the History of European Music and Counterpart (Music III) both neces- sary and helpful; and the advanced music major, who would study ad- vanced Music under the capable guidance of Mr. Leonard DeMaio. Mr. Rocco Autorino is the man in the director's chair when our mixed and select choruses take to the risers for a performance. Mr. Autorino, an accomplished vocalist in his own right, selects music from a wide span of numbers, ranging from early sacred music to contemporary folk numbers. The vocal class which he conducts helps the student gain confidence in his solo work, improve his vocal technique, and realize the potential of his own voice. The Music Department, which has been consistent in turning out fine music students with a college acceptance rate of 85%, has also received numerous awards and grants for its fine work. The Electronic and American Music courses have received government grants, and the latter had also been awarded a National Freedom Foundation Grant and the Downbeat Jazz Award. Compositions produced by alumni of our department have been performed at Trinity College, the University of Connecticut, on the National Education Television network and at the National Music Teacher's Conference. 86 Mr. Rocco Autorino Mr. Dana Hawes Physical Education The Physical Education Department of Enfield High School offers a wide variety of activities. These activities include many individual sports such as archery, tennis, handball, gymnastics, and and field events. It also offers such team games as speedball, volleyball, soft- ball soccer and fieldhockey. It is the main objective of the department to provide a wide back- ground of activities that can be enjoyed after a student leaves Enfield High. The program also includes such intramural programs as flag football, basketball, handball, volleyball, softball, track and field, and tennis. This year the Physical Education Department has initiated a selec- tive program for Juniors and Seniors. With this idea, students have a choice of activities in the area of most interest to them. Mrs. Kathleen Bromage 87 Driver Education The Enfield High School driver and traffic safety department contributes its resources to introducing young people to the highway transportation system. Preparing its students to be in- formed and active supporters of sound traffic safety programs are the major goals of the department. Although driver and traffic safety education is only one force that influences operator behav- ior, it is probably one of the most powerful influences. Four captains were named: Pat Riley, Paul Roy, Mike Krikorian and Dan Donnelly. The season was kicked off in Windsor Locks where our Raiders won convincingly 28-8. Pat Riley tossed T.D. passes to Tim Mur- phy and Craig Ackerman. Joe Seeley scored from 63 yards on an end sweep, and Ed Kostyk iced the cake when he rambled 60 yards with an interception. This fine performance was marred by the fact that Co-captain Mike Krikorian was lost for the year with an injury. Against a tough East Hartford team, Enfield came away with a hard fought 14-8 victory. Seeley returned a punt 45 yards and Tim Murphy made a great catch on a pass from Riley for T.D.'s. The Green Machine shifted into high gear in its next two games. South Catholic fell 29-0. Peluso raced for two T.D.'s and Seeley and DiDoel also scored The front line, led by Thibodeau, Duro- cner and Flower paved the wav for Enfield runners. Next the Raiders mutilated the Pulaski Generals 56-12. Six Raid- ers scored in the romp. Joe Seeley and Mike Caruso scored two each; Mike Peluso, Tony Brown and Bruce Soderlund scored one each. Enfield lost a heartbreaker to Bulkeley 10-0. Bulkeley scored all their points in the first three minutes. Finding themselves behind for the first time this year, the defense came to life, clamped down, and shut the Bulldogs out. The offense was sparked by Tim Murphy's 5 pass receptions, but Enfield couldn't cross the goal. Three times the Raiders fought to within the 10 yard line and each time they were stopped. The Green bounced back and trounced East Catholic 49-8. Joe Head Coach — Joseph Lamana Morris. FOOTBALL The Jet Seeley tore through the Eagles for 146 yards in 15 at- tempts and scored 3 T.D.'s. Riley scored twice, once on a pass from Junior quarterback Dippel, who also connected with Tim Murphy for six. The defense scored when Donnelly fell on a fumble. A comeback try aginst Killingly failed 14-6. With 30 seconds left Pat Riley hit ace receiver Murphy for 30 yards and a score. The Raiders recovered an onside kick but there wasn't enough time. Seeley picked up 123 yards against the Indians. Against state-ranked Northwest Catholic, Enfield played like a well-oiled machine. Every player starred in a 42-8 romp. Tim Murphy and Pat Riley teamed up for 4 touchdowns. Seeley seared Northwest for 155 yards and touchdown runs of 7 and 87 yards. All told the Raider offense gained 454 yards. The real story was En- field's Super Defense . Their rock-ribbed unit intercepted 6 pas- ses and bruised many N. W. players. For the second year the Raiders proved who was 1 as they clobbered the Falcons 39-21. Seeley blazed his way around, over and through Fermi for 5 touchdowns and 208 yards. The Jet scored on runs of 1,12, 3,18, 11 and 43 yards. Dippel added 6 on an 11 yard run. Mike Peluso and Bill Olschafski also enjoyed a fine day running as Enfield piled up 350 yards on the ground. The of- fensive line blew open huge holes for their running backs. The Defense came through with another great game, holding Fermi to 29 yards rushing. Jim Hayden intercepted 2 passes and Rich Morris and Tim Murphy both played a steady game on de- fense. Despite Fermi's 2 touchdowns in the last minutes of the game, Enfield had already locked the game away. S0CCER Many things were said before the opening of the Enfield Raiders' 1973 soccer season. Our young and inexperienced team was very un- derestimated, the reason being the loss of twelve soccer teammates to graduation. Many positions were filled by sophomores who lacked the experience of high school competition. Coach Bill Teed took the few seniors and juniors he had and combined them with the young talent of the sophomores to create a soccer team that struggled for a berth in the State Tournament. Our first two games were not an example of the potential of Enfield's soccer team. We lost our first to Bloomfield 2-5, and the second to Windsor Locks 2-4. The next game brought EHS a 2-2 tie at Simsbury. We then stomped Hartford 4-0, followed by an upset loss to Fermi, 4-1. From here on in we got together and decided that the only way we were going to show our school and fans that they had a team to be proud of was to win. The fans wanted it, but most of all we wanted it, and so we became a more competitive soccer team, picking up strength as our permanent positions became evident. We defeated our last four competitors in succession, Enfield 3, Windsor 0, and the big win for us, the fans and our school was the 2-1 win over Fermi on an excellent play by Junior Steve Magora who scored a season total of 11 goals. With our spirits high we then defeated Newington 2-0, followed by our final scheduled game in which we whomped Windham 3-0. We were very proud to display our 7-4-3 record as we were headed to the state tournament to represent Enfield. V. B. 148 r F' CLASS “IV TOUFVNAMENT (ENffDOID « COIN The State Tournament game was played against Conard on their home field. With emotions high, we represented Enfield to the best of our ability. Unfortunately we fell by a score of three to zero. We were disappointed by our loss, but not in the accomplishments of a fine 1973 season. Field Hockey. Led by Co-captains Kate Mullen and Nancy Beauregard, the Girls' Field Hockey Team compiled a season's record of five wins, three loss- es and three ties. A large turn-out in the fall found a lot of new talent in Enfield. The season opened with a loss to a strong Windsor Locks team, fol- lowed by a tie with Conard. Their first victory came over South Wind- sor, by a score of two to zero. Rival Fermi handed the girls a defeat in a hard played game. A win over East Windsor, followed by defeat at the sticks of Windsor Locks, found the season half through. The second half of the season was entirely uphill as the team was not defeated in any of their remaining games. A win over South Windsor started them off. A tie with Fermi in which the Raiders scored first and dominated the entire game, a surprising and exciting win over power- ful Simsbury, and a second tie with Conard put the Girls in the newly formed State Tournament. The final game of the season was a sound defeat of East Windsor. All-in-all an equal balance of seniors, juniors and sophomores led to a satisfying and successful season. High scorer of the season was Sophomore Sue Herter, who contrib- uted seven goals to the Raiders' cause, followed by Senior Co-Captain Kate Mullen with six. The Junior Varsity also had a successful season, compiling a season's record of four wins and three losses. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's edition of the Enfield Raider basketball team ended with a flourish, win- ning 12 of its final 15 games as a strong nucleus of seniors and a supporting cast of several juniors propelled our boys to a 14-6 overall record, one of the finest in many a year. Coach John Skypeck started four seniors, Paul DaSilva, Tim Murphy, Mike Shirley and Ray Boucher, and one junior, Jim Hayden, for most of the highly successful cam- paign, and these five Raiders provided a winning combination. Four substitutes who often came off the bench to provide a needed spark were seniors Jay Kurmaskie and Paul Uricchio and juniors Carm Conte and Rich Morris. After opening the season at home by losing to a tough Rockville quintet, the Raid- ers took to the road for four consecutive road encounters, winning two and losing two. Co-captain DaSilva scored over twenty points in each of the first five games, beginning the streak which sent him on to a 450 point season. Enfield then faced Fermi and demolished them by a 91-72 count, as Hayden put on a one-man show. The junior forward scored 42 points in the highest single point production of the season. There are other games which the class of '74 will not soon forget. The Raiders man- handled Norwich for their first win in history over the pesky Wildcats as DaSilva and Hayden combined for 43 points. Three games later, East Hartford invaded our gym and wished they hadn't. Shirley played the finest game of his career, scoring 18 tallies and gathering in 15 rebounds in a fine individual effort. Murphy scored two baskets in the final minute as we eked out a nip and tuck triumph. Co-captains DaSilva and Murphy keyed a thrilling last-minute triumph over Conard, who won the champion- ship of the CCIL, the league in which Enfield will compete next year. CDC champion New Britain found the Raiders, and especially DaSilva, tough in registering a seven point victory. Paul scorched the nets for 31 points. Enfield was now ready for the LL Tournament, and entered it ranked seventh in the state. While DaSilva led Raider scorers with a 22.5 average, Hayden hit at a 14.4 clip, Mur- phy at 13.2, Shirley at 8.2 and playmaking guard Boucher at 3.8 plus many assists. P.K. 166 Coach John Skypeck. Girl's Basketball Hopes ran high at the beginning of the 1973-74 Girls' basketball season for a triumphant and exciting year. These hopes were realized, judging by the Var- sity's record of 12-2, and the JV's unde- feated season. There were seven returning Varsity players from last year, each one talented and contributing to the spirited team ef- fort. The remaining eleven girls support- ed and filled in admirably to round out the hard-working ball club. The season was sparked by the Girls' first win, 36-32, over Conard. The team proved its capacity to work well as a unit under pressure, to play its own game and to bounce back when behind. It seemed that nothing could slow down the Girls for their first nine games as they sped by such competitive teams as Penney, Hall, and Newington. Before a good-sized and spirited crowd, Enfield defeathered the Fermi Falcons twice for the Girls sweetest victories ever. The Girls lost more than a game, however, when they bowed to Windsor Locks midseason. They forfeited their winning streak, and perhaps some of their confidence and spark. However, only one more game fell as a result of this disappointment, and the season was ended with an excep- tional record of twelve wins and two losses. Despite rigorous preparation and an outstanding team effort, the girls failed to conquer East Haven in their first tournament game. The Junior Varsity team was a promising group, skilled and eager. The unit played an excellent brand of ball and emerged undefeated and ready to build up and shoot for an undefeated varsity season next year. 172 Coach Cookie Bromage Captain Marilyn Cardone Captain Jeannie Pazik Captain Kate Mullen Nancy Beauregard Liz Beaupre Marti Palmer Girli Tournament Ice Hockey: Kneeling: Tim Crigely, Bill Stevenson, Roger Anderson, Jack McDonald, Dan Abraham, Steve Matackey, Bob Russell, Mike Bru- no Bernie Morrissette, Jim Bousquet, Chuck Hart and Rick VanNostrand. Hockey has arrived back to Enfield High School after a three year absence. The high school team ended the season with- out winning a game, but there were many games where the score was not decided until the very end. Many of the games were lost in the last period, indicating a lack of depth as the main reason for not winning. This situation is not anticipated for the coming year, however. Some of the stand-outs for the team were: Wendell Grigely, captain; Tim Grigely; Jeff Toohey; Norman Des- Roches; Rene Morrissette; and Jack McDonald. One thing is for sure, and that is that the players coming back for next year's season are anxious to rewrite the records of this year. RM and RM 177 Boys'Swimming. Third Row. Mike Lally, Ted Wagner, Eric Longfellow, John Coughlin, Mike Jones, Ken Sayles, Bob Gwaizda and Mike LeGassey Swimming The Enfield High Boys' Swim Team enjoyed an improved season in their second year of competition. The team, composed mostly of sophomores and juniors, finished the year with a record of 3-7. The young team, coached under the watchful eye of Bill Teed, lost their first meet to a tough Windsor Locks team. However, the hard working swimmers rebounded and beat Suffield Academy. The young tankers, looking forward to the tough competition of the CCIL next year took on tough opponents for the valuable experience. Hence they lost the next six meets to some of the top schools in the area. With the experience gained they came out victors in the last two meets of the year, beating Wilcox Tech of Meriden and Suffield Acad- emy again. Next years' veteran team is hoping for an even better season. Junior Bill Snow qualified for the state tournament again this year. Next year he will hopefully be joined by those who barely missed qualifying this year. All previous school records were broken, being replaced by new ones that were drastically lower. Hopefully these will not remain rec- ords for long, as the team gains new heights through the experience of competition. 180 Coach Bill Teed KC, KM Wrestling. Kneeling: John Schmidt and John Smith. WRESTLING After a five year absence due to a cut in the town budget, wres- tling has returned to Enfield High School. The team, made up of mostly sophomores, and juniors, had to forfeit winning in order to gain experience. The highlight of the season was the first En- field-Fermi meet in which we drubbed the Falcons by a score of 35-24. Team Co-captains were Mike Peluso and Most Valuable Player award winner Paul Roy, who had a record of 7-5-1. The team end- ed the season with a record of 3-11. The victories were over Kent Academy, RHAM High School, and Fermi. On March 2, the team competed in the District Five Champion- ships in which Paul Roy came home with a fourth place award, and Dave Flower, Dave Gillen, Jerry LeCasse and Jeff Curtiss with fifth place awards. With fourteen boys returning and nineteen freshmen coming up from J.F. Kennedy's undefeated team, the building program has indeed begun. — J.C. and J.A.
