lEnMft Bigi) i d|O0l JDrrfaa' “ the world's a stage and the men and women merely players. Echo is a reflection of sound waves. ECHO 1971 not only reflects the sound, hut the light, of the transition that our class has made between our entrance into and our exit from Enfield High School. Put forth here is our change from novice performers to stars, but only in an amateur play. A different type of entrance now lies ahead—the entrance to a larger part of the stage—the future. As with mirrors at fun houses, reflections do become distorted. While reading ECHO 1971, relive this one act in the play of life. Your kindness and generosity has reached many members of the student body. In the classroom, you present your students with a challenge. Preparation for today as well as tomorrow is a character- istic which has become more relevant to us as our high school years draw to a close, and your help has enabled us to realize our importance in the future. As a member of the English Department, you were instrumental in making curriculum changes. Your search for new methods of teaching has sparked enthusiasm in many students. But your interest in us goes beyond the classroom. We are indebted to you for your services as an advisor for Student Council and as past advisor for TICKER. Through your years of hard work and effort, you have gained the respect and ad- miration of the entire school. With sincerest appreciation, we, the Class of 1971, dedicate our ECHO to you. t r a t 0 n 4 it Jirst he infant9 —and then the lover with a woeful ballad— entrances. 11 Am ) ' '.0 Oiw V ',r. Janet Bednarz has a hard time adjusting to school hours. I hope we can last another 180 days. Twenty-three more pictures and I’ll he able to wallpaper my room. Ip the Down Staircase! Many are oar joys in youth, but oh! what happiness to live ll hen every hour brings palpable access of knowledge, when all knowledge is delight. . . The EHS lockers seem to get smaller every year. Who says that students loiter in the lobby? But the hell didn't ring yet! Bob Krawic and Dennis Bellamy compare schedules. 16 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS. Left to right: John Kukulka, Vice-President; Linda Lumsden, Secretary; Judy Hall. Treasurer; and Fred Lauria, President. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE As our high school years come to a climax, a curtain falls. This marks the end of the roles we played as stu- dents of Enfield High School. Behind this curtain re- mains only the memories of our high school years: the times of sadness, the times of laughter; the times of de- feat, the times of victory; the times of hate, and the times of love. Vet the curtain will rise again and the Class of 71 will assume new roles in life. What the future holds for us is not known. But what we do know is that we are prepared for its challenge. We thank all those who have helped in this preparation for now we can look into the future with greater confidence. When we accept our new' roles in life, we will face them to the best of our ability even though life confronts us with many obstacles. (Louise Cramer, Sue Kwie- cienski, and Joan Kilcoyne) Guidance has an abundant amount of information on college and job oppor- tunities. (Tom Dunn) GUIDANCE The services of the counseling staff are available to students, parents and teachers having a need for educational, vocational, social relations or personal counseling and information. This year Mr. Richard Hellstein joined the guidance staff and as- sumed the responsibility as a counselor for seniors as well as under- classmen. Reginning with the 1970-1971 school year, students had the oppor- tunity to utilize the new guidance resource laboratory. Books, pam- phlets, filmstrips, files, and catalogs for college and occupational planning; resource materials on the draft, military service, and drugs; and special equipment such as the college view-deck, SRA, occupational file, and film strip monitor are available in the guidance resource lab. Mr. zuZel speaks to two senior girls on the wide variety of jobs available to them. (Josephine Vincenzo and Louise Cramer) MR. DENNIS CORSO A long look at the past. (Bill Strimaitis and Mr. DePhilippe) SOCIAL STUDIES LAB The basic philosophy of the Lab is for learning to come alive through the hands of the students. This is a place of innovative learning. The students in the Lab learn to work with the teachers; they share ideas, and help each other with various projects. Students in the Lab also teach teachers and other students to use photographic equip- ment, tape recorders, and all types of technical aides. Working in the Social Studies Lab is a real learning experience. MR. FRANK GAWLE Right on target! (Bob Krawic and Joe Killian) MR. EDWARD BOLAND Department Head SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Social Science Department has led the way in many curriculum innovations. They have advanced the method of independent study so that the student presentation is one of his own work. Senior Seminar, offered on a pass-fail basis, enables the student to choose four different quarter-year topics. The program started as a three-day seminar last year and was actively and enthusiastically received by our class. Some areas of study being offered are: Environmental Studies, Criminology, Psychology, and Black Studies. Guest speakers are frequent visitors to the Seminar courses. MRS. PATRICIA BIGOS MR. WILLIAM FOGARTY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Breaking the traditional method of teaching English Literature chrono- logically, the English Department this year has stressed the dilemmas of man versus himself, his environment, and society. Skills in composition, the inter- pretation of literature, and grammar are acquired in the basic curriculum. Individual interests may be cultivated in courses as diverse as Novel and Poetry, Argumentation and Debate, Journalism, Short Story and Drama, Speech and Communication, and Contemporary Novels. Movies and field trips, such as the excursions to view Hamlet and Macbeth, are often utilized to supplement classroom material. MRS. MURIEL HUMPHREY Head Zinger Flinger? MR. ROBERT KNIGHT MRS. ELIZABETH MULLEN MISS KATHERINE ROY MR. JOHN TALBOT BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Today’s business world requires knowledgeable skills, attitudes, and behavioral patterns. The Business Department offers courses in typing, accounting, stenography, business machines, and office procedures. Additional courses in business math, economic geography, law and business prin- ciples help broaden the students’ understanding of the busi- ness world. This year the Work-Experience Program, which places students in the local community for on the job train- ing, has been expanded to include Office Occupations and Distributive Education. This program comes under a work- coordinator and a teacher supervisor. Keep those figures straight. (Marilyn Swentnickas) MRS. POPPY FOWLER MRS. SANDRA ARNDT Department Head MR. ROBERT FITZGERALD MR. MISS BARBARA FLEBOTTE Department Head MISS PATRICIA BERTONE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The Enfield High School Mathematics Department faces the tremendous job of providing the fundamental background in math for the student. This is essential in enabling the student to function effectively and creatively in a society which is be- coming increasingly technological. The modern teaching methods utilized by the Mathematics Department have created a stimulating atmosphere which is also contemporary. Statistics, Analysis, and Calculus are among the challenging courses available to college bound students interested in math. Classes in Bookkeeping and Clerical Office Practices are designed to fit the needs of students planning on entering the business world. Is this the way you learn the alphabet? FRANCIS RAGO SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Science is becoming increasingly important in our everyday world. The Science Department prepares the student for an essential background in the sciences through its vast facilities and wide range of courses. Physical Science II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Biology are all offered to seniors. Learning-through-doing is stressed in the Science Department with the students doing laboratory ex- periments and research papers. Independent study, involving a major research project and paper, is emphasized in Advanced Biology. Debbie McLaughlin, Sarah Belanger and Sue Grenier are busy doing research. W v. MRS. SIRVANT HINTLIAN Department Head MISS SANDRA KAZMAN Glen Bond uses the foreign language lab to perfect conver- sational skills. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Students interested in foreign language, here at Enfield High, are able to take courses in French, Spanish, or Latin. Formal classroom instruction, as well as extensively used audio-visual aids, create an effective and contemporary atmosphere. A major revision in the Spanish Department’s curriculum is the use of the EBF program in place of the obsolescent ALM method. A greater emphasis is placed upon movie photography and the use of cue cards. The EBF program is superior to the old method in that it has a greater potential of reaching the entire range of students. A greater overall re- tention and comprehension rate are common results of this new method. Buenos Estudiantes! MR. PAUL LUCIUS MISS MARY DONNA LYONS MR. RAYMOND MRS. ELAINE MYOTT MONTAGNA 101 ART DEPARTMENT Enfield High School has the advantage of having talented, creative art teachers and a very imaginative and instructive course of study. Students are provided with the basics as well as the more difficult concepts of art. A new subject, introduced into the department this year, is Arts and Crafts. In this program students learn to work with clay, as well as using leather, string and weaving mate- rials to create different projects. We feel the Art Department in our high school has a well designed curriculum for learning and developing the talents of our students. MR. JAMES GROSS 102 Celeste Lepore works on her plastic etching. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT In today’s world with its modern buildings and prosperous media, industry has a large part in the growth of the nation. Through the courses provided by our industrial arts teachers, students are introduced to the basics of engineering, metal processing, carpentry and architecture. In this department we feel we successfully instruct our students on the need for people in industry. Where he stops, nobody knows. (Bill Hoskins) MR. WILLIAM SCUDARI Department Head MR. LOUISE THEOFILOS Department Head Future homemakers of America. (Barbara Champion, Rick Gegen- heimer, Henry Asade, Linda O’Connor, and Carol Lagrow) HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT The Home Economics department offers modern facilities and teaching methods to prepare the student for the future. Girls acquire skills necessary for the managing of a home, cooking, sewing and child care. Family nutrition and home budgeting are emphasised. This year a program on sepa- rate clothing construction and a course on interior decorating were offered. Family Living, offered to senior boys and girls, prepares each for their role in marriage. Child development is an impor- tant part of the course. Students partici- pated in a Play School for two weeks, in which they cared for and taught pre-school children. The previewing and buying of an apartment or house were discussed. This course, on the whole, helps students under- stand the involvements of marriage, and how one can prepare for marriage. MUSIC DEPARTMENT Mr. Autorino, Mr. DeMaio, and Mr. Hawes are the music teachers for the year 1970-1971. The music department has be- come an attractive place for any student interested in instruments or vocal training. The courses range from general music, and the history of American and European music, to the chorus and marching band. A new course which has become an im- portant part of the music department is Electronic Music. The students are enthu- siastic with an involvement in tapings and various activities. The classes for vocal training have also become quite popular. Under the guidance of Mr. Autorino, the students are able to develop their singing voices. For the en- joyment of the students, songs are sung from every era, from classics to todays rock. Mr. DeMaio’s “History of American Music” class. A simple lesson in music. I Jeff Morgan. This year’s instructors, Mrs. Bromage, Mr. Lamagna, Miss Pirog, and Mr. Skypeck have included into their already varied program, several new individual sports. These sports, such as tennis and golf, which take the emphasis off team competition, are aimed for long term enjoyment, proving the importance of physical fitness. An extension has been made, to the delight of the students, with co- educational sports. The gym classes are combined for square dancing, speedball, volleyball, and many other activities. An already standard activity is intramural sports. This program is for any student who wants an opportunity to extend his athletic abilities out of class. Competition is provoked in individual and team activities, with rivalry between fellow students. MR. CARL ANGELICA Director of Athletics 106 MRS. KATHERINE BROMACE MR. JOHN SKYPECK DRIVER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Today, our age of modem transportation has made it necessary that one learns to drive a car in order to be able to provide one’s own transportation when needed. Through our driver education pro- gram we feel we can successfully teach our students how to drive a car. With the facilities that are avail- able such as our simulated cars and visual-aids the students that take this elective course will be able to face today’s fast moving world with ease. Mr. Jack Lyons and Blyth Boman simulate a driving experience. I said put it into Drive, not Reverse! Al- ways giving 100 percent of itself—win, lose, or tie—our team brought continual honor to our school. Starting our second season in the CDC, we were nar- rowly defeated by the Norwich Free Academy Wildcats in the last quarter of our first game. The Hornets from East Hartford flew home defeated from our second game. Handoffs, pitchouts, and passes from tri-captain Kevin Mayo to Joe Caruso and Steve Vesce brought both yardage and points. Caruso’s efforts in these first two games enabled him to lead the league w ith 131 yards gained to that time. The Raiders then lost five consecutive games including three to the three-way CDC leaders—New London, Hartford Public, and New Britain. The green-and-w hite entertained us to a gripping game at New Britain where they lost by only twelve points. A predominantly ground game, the New Britain match was centered about halfback Bob Scavotto. He had a tre- mendous day and picked up 176 yards in twentv-th-ee carries including a fantastic 39-yard touchdown sprint. Determination twice spurred the Raiders on to score against the top-ranked Hurricanes. Scavotto was sub- sequently named the Hartford Times “Player of the Week.” Said Coach Lamana, “I think he’s an excel- lent college prospect.” In our last game, we battled Bulkeley to a 6-6 stand- still. Mayo scored the tying TI) and almost pulled out an Enfield win with a good pass. Also of notable mention were Juniors Rich Fenton, Gary Racine, and Walt Kukulka. Fenton was a consistent ground gainer and an excellent quarterback. Racine was the team’s best kicker until sidelined with a leg injury. Kukulka saw double-duty as a back and as a replacement for Racine. John Kukulka, captain of the team, took part in more than half of the plays. He was equally versatile at heading the hall or dribbling it down the held. Dennis Reynolds was also an outstanding player. His speed and kicking ability enabled him to steal the ball from many adversaries. The climax of the season came with the final game which was against Weaver. The game was played on a rainy Friday before the stalwart and true soccer fans. Hopes looked dim for the Raiders for we had no wins in the season, while Weaver was previously undefeated with a 12-0 record. The Beav- ers quickly scored the first goal, but the Raiders, playing at 110 percent, forged ahead for one of the few times in the season. Weaver evened the score once more. The Big Green, however, not to be out- done, went into the lead again. This time, we stayed ahead for the remainder of the game. The final score was 5 to 3, a tremendous morale victory. This fantastic game was the Class of 71’s final contribution to EHS soccer, and, hopefully, the start of a winning streak to be continued by the Class of 72. 126 Coach William Teed 127 Coach and Team plan new strategy. The game was close for three quarters but the Raiders, led by Co-Captains Fred Lauria and Jay Tyler, prevailed. Though the season was a rough one the Raider team managed to add other victories to its record. After the Pulaski game, Raiders rolled over East Hartford, 71-67. Enfield actually led by as much as fifteen going into the final quarter before flooding the floor with substitutes. The Big Green also added arch-rival Windsor Locks to its list of victims in a high spirited nail-biter at our home court by a score of 56-49. The high point of the season was a 65-64 upset over a highly regarded New Britain team. This game was no doubt £nfield’s most satisfying victory. The team was well balanced with skill, strength, quickness, determination, and hustle. Jay Tyler raised Enfield's score many times with his shooting ability. Strong rebounders on the team were Fred Lauria and Rod Trombley. Guards Steve Nadeau, Kevin Mayo, and Steve Vesce, were constantly on the move for Enfield. Throughout the rough season the team spirit was sparked by self-determination, individual effort, and a sense of pride. Despite the team’s record of 4-16, the Raiders were still the winning team in sportsmanship. The girls were proud to announce their record, wrap- ping the season up with a 12-0 regular season record and an overall record of 14-0. Although they are not in a league, this impressive record surpasses that of any team in the area. Thus the girls have rightly earned the title of Champions. A vote, by the girls, after the final game resulted in a unanimous decision for M.V.P. award. Guard Joan Chambers received this well deserved honor bv scoring 113 points in one season and being effective defensively as well as offensively. The results of full season determination and effort on the part of two wrestlers paid off. Senior Steve Cyr and Junior Jerry Sullivan were winners in the Northwestern Sectional Wrestling Tournament. Steve performed very well in the 108 pound weight class. A loss in the semi-finals to the champion, however, placed him 4th. Jerry won three of his four matches. It offers the opportunities for understanding the past, living with the present, and dealing with the future. An individual can change himself, but the improvement of society takes more than just the acts of one woman or one man; just as the success of our class lies in all of us. Remember our sophomore year? The response of this class establishing an identity was humiliating and degrading— our failure caused by the fact that the majority of us didn’t Like the sun slowly rising in the early morning sky, we as juniors began to work for the success of our class, not just for ourselves. Examples of our group effort during our junior and senior years were: the car wash, the candy drive, the paper drive, Getting Together Dance, the Junior Prom, and the Senior Prom. The success of our class in the junior and senior years was due to the fact that we ail got involved in a small society within a larger one. Whether activities were sponsored by the class or the school, you and fellow members as individuals made the Class of 71 great, because you all joined hands and participated. It is not impor- tant what activity you were involved in, hut the fact you got involved. Since we have shown our capabilities for functioning cooperatively and achieving our goals in one institution of society, we are now ready to attempt the responsibilities of society as a whole. I apologize to those of you who feel that your activity should be mentioned indi- vidually and those individuals who feel offended for not having your names men- tioned. However, I cannot justify my mentioning all of you and the work you did for the class. Only you and fellow members know how much time and effort, sweat and tears were put into accomplishing your goals. The appreciation and recognition, the pride and fulfillment of yourselves and success of your activity reflect the good of the class; and can only be truly appreciated by you and fellow members. All of you did something, whether it was participation in school or representing the class in the eyes of the public. Shakespeare once said: “All the world is a stage. And all men and women merely players They have their exits and entrances. And one man in his time plays many parts!” All of us in high school played many parts: the student, the part-time worker, the car owner, the boyfriend or girlfriend, the son or daughter, active member of an activity, the friend, and the classmate. As alumni we shall play new parts—the citizen, the employee, the husband or wife, the soldier, or the college student. Every man and woman will have personal success and failure, but the success in our improving man’s quality of life can be determined by whether or not we keep working together, not only for the success of the Class of 71, but for the success of society. May you all find love, peace and happiness. Donna Stefano Class Historian Mr. Thomas Ouellette, Advisor 163 Once upon a time in the quiet little town of Enfield there was a peaceful little school. This school was appropriately called Enfield High and was the home of an Indian tribe. 12 ' One sunny September day in 1970, the town was invaded by 708 screaming, noisy, spirited Indians. They began to swarm across the green fields (after morning tribal sessions) running, jumping, and playing all the tradi- tional Indian games. Some were trying to kick a hall into a net. while others matched their strength against others for the sacred prize: a piece of pigskin. The maidens of the tribe were busy clubbing a ball around with crooked sticks. All the Indians were en- couraged by everyone, but a few maidens were the loudest in the tribe. They could be heard yelling and chanting all the Indian cheers. 164 Then one day the land was covered by a white blanket. The Indians were forced to play other games. The braves began to try to put a ball through a net. Not to be outdone, the young maidens did this also. i The young braves saw what was going on and began to practice for the day when they could fill the moccasins of their big brothers. Other braves put on funny head dresses and threw each other across some pads they had put on the ground. Still other braves tried to put a heavy, flat rock into a net by put- ting on sharp feet and gliding across the great hard water. The town of Enfield didn't mind these games, though. The settlers knew that the Indians’ games were rough and that there would be other rougher contests come spring. They knew that they would miss each one of those 708 Indians when they left in June of 71 for other campsites. Why did the people like this Indian tribe so well? Because they were a tribe of The tribe of Raiders was the most spirited and friendly tribe ever to set up teepees on Enfield soil and that made everything all right! 165 “Ah, isn’t that nice.” (Jean Love) Enfield Seniors, we salute you.
