Enfield High School Enfield, Connecticut The turning of our high school years has afforded us varied experiences: a time for excitement, a time for routine; a time for contemplation, a time for ac- tion; a time to listen, a time to speak; a time of frustration, a time of resolution; a time to wait, a time to grow; a time to stay, a time to go. It is our turn to go. Let us ponder the memories and cherish the friendships — and face the future with a purpose. Dedication “A time to plant, a time to reap;” Mr. Joseph Cabrera planted in Enfield High School a dedication and a courage. As principal, he was sincerely concerned with his responsibility to both students and parents. As a man, he showed a strength that few of us are called upon to show. It is in the hope that we may reap the fullness of his dedication and courage that we. the Class of 1970, dedicate our yearbook to him. To everything there is a season A time to be born, A time to die; A time to plant, A time to reap; 7 A time to laugh, A time to weep; s A time to build up, A time to break down; A time to cast away stones, A time to gather stones together; •• % 4 Hi A :'C m: « si «£ ?1 uV' ... k{i.w. x.; l . - f vV A' i '. •i vTx. ■•'.V ,. r. a VS ' T • A ’ m . - « “ , A • 4 V •V ‘A. « r • . •• t; '' 9 am KBs? v ' . CLASS OFFICERS. Left to right: Kirk Smallidge, President; Laurie Sanger, Historian; Marie Stuart, Secretary; Bonnie Smyth, Treasurer; and Tom Reale, Vice-President. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As we entered Enfield High School, it was our turn to become a class. Our turn to show this school what we had to offer in spirit, enthusiasm, and purpose. We have done it! Now as we leave Enfield High, we turn to reflect upon the mo- ments we enjoyed most during the past four years. Even as we do this, we must turn and look to the future as a time to mature. Upon a firm and secure foundation built at Enfield High School, we have prepared ourselves for what lies ahead. We know not what the future holds for us, but we do know that we hold the future. 18 Kirk Smallidgi I ENFIELD I high school LINDA LEE ASHNESS Dancing Club 1; Glee Club 4. DAVID ROY ADAMS T.V. This year Mrs. Rae Tober joined the guidance staff and assumed responsibilities as sophomore coun- selor. Mrs. Tober also assisted Mr. Benoit at the high school annex. In addition to increasing the counseling staff, 1969-1970 year saw the initiation of several new programs. With cooperation of the Industrial Edu- cation Department, a mobile occupational cart was constructed on which was placed all available career information. The cart was designed to allow teach- ers and students to use this information in the class- room. Programs in using occupational information were developed for students and faculty use. Also a forum series entitled “Parents Want to Know ’ was held in the fall and spring for parents interested in obtaining information and discussing such subjects as college admissions, financial aid, and the high school program of studies. The serv- ices of the guidance department are available to all students, having need for educational, vocational, or personal information or assistance. The Social Studies Lab is one of the prides of Enfield High School. Living History Units work with student directors and faculty advisors to produce a visual history of important subjects. With grants from the Eastman Kodak Company, the lab has put together several units, including such topics as ‘The Draft, Fermi High, “Rehabilitation,” and “Our Vanishing Heritage.” “Our Vanishing Heritage,” which is the history of Enfield, received international recognition for its efforts to visually preserve our town’s past. For this reason, the department offers a curriculum to suit the needs of both academic and business students. Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Analysis are the stimulating courses introduced to the academic student. To obtain a higher understanding of mathematics, the advanced math student is given the opportunity to expand his knowl- edge through Calculus and Probability and Statistics. The business student is given experience in the fundamentals of practical math and business math which includes Bookkeep- ing and Clerical Practices. Enfield High recognizes the importance of math in every endeavor of today. Math has become an essential part of our daily life from a simple equation to the most complex computer. In a sense, mathematics has become a universal language. ‘What did I do to deserve this?” Science Department The Science Department of Enfield High School attempts to keep up with the pace of the rapidly turning world. This department offers its students a basic understanding of modern concepts, which the Science Department feels is invaluable. This department permits the individual to ex- plore ideas and theories. The student, through modern lab- oratory and classroom facilities, is able to seek the truth and at the same time satisfy his own curiosity. The curriculum includes General Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Accelerated students who have completed Biol- ogy and Chemistry successfully are allowed to take Advanced Biology or Advanced Chemistry, both of which are new this year. These two courses offer a deeper, more challenging program. Whether it is a new law of physics dealing with rocket engines for interplanetary flight or a heart transplant, the Enfield High School Science Department is ready and will- ing to replace its old textbooks and ideas with new ones. A variety of courses are made available to all students in vocal and instrumental fields, adding cultural and intellectual stimuli. These studies are geared to challenge the professional as well as the novice student. An excellent marching band can be seen at Enfield High. In the season’s opener, the Raiders were pitted against pre-season favorite, Norwich. Like a typical En- field team, they rose to the challenge and solidly thumped the Norwich Wildcats by a score of 32-13. The next game found the Raiders at the home of the East Hartford Hor- nets. Rehind the solid blocking of Bob Bray and Dave Maynard, quarterback Tom Fenton was able to complete several passes to end Rick Dressier. Their defense was un- penetrable as Jeff Hayden, Dan Kelley, and Jim Mullen kept the Hornets from scoring. The final score was 30-0. The third game was perhaps the best display of determin- ation of any game this season. It was the Green and White’s first home game and over 2500 people came down to watch the Raiders come from behind to swamp the Fitch Falcons, 54-20. After a quick score on a good catch and dazzling run by end Tom Grondski, the Falcons scored the next two times they had the ball. But, the Raiders came back strong. Halfback Jim McClintock was sprung by a fantastic block by Joe Racine and raced 75 yards down the sidelines to start the fireworks. From then on, it was all Enfield. The Raiders then had a well deserved but controversial two week layoff. During that time, they scrimmaged with the eventual winner of the Suburban League and clob- bered them, eight TD’s to three, to prove that they truly did not belong in the C.D.C. After the layoff, the Raiders played New London, but it was not Enfield’s day. The Green wave suffered its first defeat of the season, 13-8. Fullback Glenn Provencher and middle guard Tom Joubert kept New London from penetrating repeatedly. A good team bounces back and that is what the Raiders did as they traveled to Dillon Stadium to play the Hartford Owls. After a scoreless first quarter, the team got rolling and could not be stopped as they scored 32 points to the Owls' 0. The second home game of the season was against New Britain. The Raiders fought hard and never gave up, but New Britain was not to be denied as they won, 32-6. Weaver was next on the schedule. The Green and White scored in the first minutes and held Weaver until the end of the first half. After an Enfield punt, Weaver marched back to tie the score. Penalties then began to hurt the Raiders and conversely benefit the Beavers as the final score was 22-8. In the final game, the Green wave took out all of their animosities carried over from the last two games. With Nick Rago and Charlie Fuller blocking, the Raiders humiliated the Bulkeley Bulldogs, 42-0. The Raiders finished the season with a very good 5-3 record for third place in the toughest league in New England. 119 Co-Captains Glenn Provencher and Joe Racine. Cheerleaders Through endless hours of practice and various stages of laryngitis, the 1970 Varsity Cheerleading Squad supported the green and white with several new songs and cheers, sparking a fiery enthusiasm on the gridiron, soccer field, and basketball courts. This proved that these girls were behind the men, behind the ball, “all the way.” In addition to their cheering duties, this year’s squad worked with as much perseverance and desire as the teams they cheered for, by selling Booster Badges before football games to supply the squad with necessary funds for posters, bulletin boards and basketball hoops, all which helped to kindle an aura of school spirit. Wrestling Team Led by coach William Teed and assisted by Bruce Bullock, the Enfield Wrestling Team grappled with some of the toughest teams in the area. Enfield’s win over Weaver High School, the school which previous Raider teams have failed to defeat, shows that the Big Green Wrestlers are not soft. Possibly the greatest hinderance to the team was the lack of wrestlers to fill the twelve weight classes. More than once, the team had to forfeit up to twenty points. However, the coaches were pleased with in- dividual efforts of the team. Record-wise, the best of the seniors was Tim Scussel with a record of 4-4-1 in his fourth year. Co-Captain Tom Hayden showed outstanding skill, worthy of his co-captain status. The hoopsters challenged their foes fearlessly as we played some of the best teams in the state. The team claimed victory over Bulkeley, East Hart- ford, and Windsor. Through long hours of hard work, patience and much perseverence, this group has managed to turn out a first rate production every time. This year’s selection is the immortal “West Side Story and promises to outdo all past performances. Portraying major characters are Mike Young, Jeanne Farley, Nick Severrino, Toni Burrington, Paul Zocco, Bob Casinghino, Nancy Skirvan, Mark Paulhus and Wendy DeRoisers. We at Enfield will always appreciate the zeal and pride that unselfishly went into these plays. It was not the plays or the props that made all pro- ductions great, but the students themselves. Ski Club The Ski Club, advised by excellent skiers such as Mr. Robert Kramer and Mr. Richard Vincent and composed of those not so excellent, such as Art Mullen and Steve Muchmore, gave the ski club ex- citing and hair-raising memories. To calm them down on the longer trips to Jiminey Peak, Bromley, Killington, and Magic Mountain were the ever- cheerful snow bunnies. Everyone turned skier when everything turned snow. Even frequent trips to the hospital, when someone overestimated their “Killy” talents, did not dampen the spirit to “master the mountain.” Many a brave senior, facing the dangers of being trampled to death by little sophomores, sat in the aisle of the bus and received a firsthand feeling of the bumpy roads. After a long, hard day on the slopes, a “Big-Mac” was a good tonic for a hungry stomach and the Ski Club was ready to tackle another exciting trip. INTERNATIONAL CLUB. The club also sponsored United Nations Week, International Day, and friendship through pen pals. The members take field trips to such places as, The Old Town Hall. Wallop School, The Old Shaker Farm, and other vanishing relics of our past. Started in the fall of 1968, the Student Freedom League has provided a valuable service to the students of Enfield High School. This youth oriented group was organized to provide an outlet for ex- amination of topics not in the school curriculum. During the first year, the Student Freedom League organized a drive to raise funds for the secessional country of Biafra. Speakers such as Andrew Melchinsky of the John Birch Society and Russel Johnson, New England Secretary of the American Friends Service Committee, were brought into school. This year. Student Freedom League organized an Enfield Moratorium Day on October 15 and spon- sored Dr. Frank Coffee of Hartford to speak on Sensitivity Training. 19 Students march their way to the Moratorium. According to Carol Muller, “Happiness is having your own bus.” Work Experience Program Among vital responsibilities of a citizen, is that of earning a living for himself and family. The better an indi- vidual is prepared for his work, the greater satisfaction he will derive from his occupation. The role of vocational education is to provide job training and general education in order to turn out individuals who will be more ef- ficient as workers and as members of society. One plan which coordinates the train- ing responsibilities of the school and community is known as Diversified Work Experience Program. The cen- tral purpose of this plan is to provide instruction and training to high school students with the objectives of increas- ing their civic and vocational intelli- gence, so that they will be better pre- pared to enter upon and continue in the incorporation of their choice. This cooperative training plan involves the school, the student-learner, and the training agency. Students attend academic classes daily, and are released from school early to report to their training station for the on-the-job phase of their learn- ing. Students are paid by the employer in accordance with state and federal regulations. Upon completion of train- ing, students receive credit toward graduation.
