to achieve a better understanding of life around us. Students burn their way to knowledge. Science A decade ago, the first Sputnik was launched into space. In this same ten years, science courses have changed dramatically. These changes were stimu- lated in part by a re-evaluation of the role of sci- ence in our national life and show up in the courses offered by the Science Department. These classes are more laboratory centered; experiments are studied in much more depth than many were ten years ago. To keep abreast of new ideas, the Science Depart- ment feels that a basic knowledge of science is in- valuable. The curriculum is designed so that scien- tific history, modern technology, and a basic under- standing of modern concepts are all studied. This year, an intensified study of Physical Sci- ence has been added to the curriculum. It is offered for the student who does not intend to attend col- lege. Bio-Chemistry, an advanced science for accel- erated students, is offered again this year. It adds a new dimension of learning for the student who finds science a challenge. Science gives the student an opportunity to satisfy his curiosity. Inquiry and research of this sort aug- ment our intellectual scope in a manner that is prac- tical, theoretical, and technological. Mathematics The Mathematics Department at Enfield High offers a diversified curriculum, which is geared to the demands of academic and business students alike. While the academic student is stimulated by such challenging courses as Algebra, Geometry, and Anal- ysis, the business student is aroused by practical mathematics. Business mathematics gives the student a strong background in the fundamentals of book- keeping and clerical practices. The accelerated math student is given the oppor- tunity to explore the fundamentals of Calculus, and thereby obtain a deeper understanding of higher mathematics. The Enfield High School Math Department feels that mathematics, with its basis of logical reasoning, can never be over-emphasized. while still calculating logically in search of solutions 12 Life is a gamble

Business In order to function successfully in the sphere of today’s highly industrial society, it is important to become adept at certain skills. To provide its students with the knowledge and experience necessary for success in the business world, the business department offers practical curriculum in actual jobs. This “work-study” program provides a strong foundation of practical knowledge for the business student. For those students not involved in this plan, courses in the operation of business machines, typing, and stenography prepare them for office work after graduation. The department also offers courses for those individuals who plan to pursue further business study at the college level. For seniors—a sure way to be accurate.
