ECHO 1 9 6 7 Enfield High School Thompsonville. Connecticut DEDICATION We the class of 1967 wish to express our deepest appreciation for the untiring efforts of Mr. Harry E. Tatoian to establish a school of the highest caliber. His enthusiasm for every task, his sincere interest in each of us, and his devotion to learning won for him our respect and admiration. His leadership and guidance during his twenty years as teacher and principal cast light upon all the students with whom he came in contact. He tried and he succeeded in creating an atmosphere of faculty-student cooperation. His immeasurable assistance in preparing us for future life and his endless concern for our well- being have better equipped us to face life’s never-ending chal- lenges. In recognition of his devotion to us and to the ideals for which he stood we proudly dedicate the 1967 Echo to Mr. Harry E. Tatoian Mr. Tatoian awards Nancy Mancuso a National Honor Society certificate. Mr. Tatoian confers with a student. BENJAMIN REVERUZZI In Appreciation The fruits of twenty-nine years of dedicated community service performed in a most unobstrusive manner has been our legacy from Mr. Reveruzzi. Few people are aware of the enormous amount of work entailed in the formulation of educational policy in the educational system of this community. When Mr. Reveruzzi was first elected to the Board of Education in 1938, there were only 1,500 pupils with a staff of seventy teachers distributed among one high school, five elementary, and two rural schools. The facilities were very limited, the employees’ salaries were very low, and the equipment was scant. Recognizing those limitations for a good educational program, Mr. Reveruzzi worked unceasingly for improvement in these areas. Serving as a member of the Finance Committee of the Board of Education for twenty years and as Secretary for six, Mr. Reveruzzi was instrumental in gaining larger appropria- tions, and for the carrying out of the policies of the Board to the extent that we have a system second to none in this state. Among other committees on which he served were the High School Site, the Enfield High School Building, the Hazardville Memo- rial School, and the Suffield Vocational Agricultural Advisory. Serving on the Com- mittes entailed hundreds of hours of meetings with hundreds of people to obtain the lust for the taxpayers’ dollars. Of the results of his personal efforts we can be justi- fiably proud and most appreciative. The record of Mr. Reveruzzi’s service and the results of his contribution are a testimonial of his superb civic interest. We, who have been the beneficiaries of his twenty-nine years of dedication to young people, thank and salute you, Mr. Ben Reveruzzi. 4 Yearbook Editors Preface Light may have many different effects. Light can be beneficial or harmful, reward- ing or punitive, pure or corrupted. But no matter what form it is in, light is man- datory. As we entered Enfield High School for the first time the shadows we cast were awkward and stumbling. This was the start of four years of great physical and mental growth. At times we may have groped and stumbled in the dark but there was always an interested teacher or administrator ready to give us guidance and understanding. Well equipped laboratories and modern classroom facilities aided us. We were offered well-rounded academic, business, academic-vocational and vocational programs. Completing these programs were our many extra-curricular activities and clubs. The true value of the light of knowledge is determined by how we apply it. We must use this light to brighten the various roads ahead of us in life. If we allow this lamp to be wasted by not using its light then we are allowing our minds to be wasted by not using its knowledge. The intensity of our flame of knowledge has been increasing each year of our education. It is up to us to obtain as much of this brilliance as our minds are capable of grasping. There is only one way we can fail in our decision, that would be if we fail to apply what we have learned to our futures. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We leave the halls of Enfield High School as older, wiser, and more mature indi- viduals. Yet, along with this growth is a general feeling of uncertainty toward the puzzling world we are about to enter. Just as, four years ago, we found ourselves as bewildered freshmen longing for the status we had acquired in junior high, we today long for the security we have attained here at Enfield. We face the same situation today, as every past generation has, for society thrives on man’s dependence on one another. Alone we cannot change the world, but each of us can be one glowing spark, kindling the fire of hope for a bright future that awaits us all. The hootenanny “BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND” was presented to a crowd of 500 persons on May 28, 1965. M. C.’s Laura Baione and Tim Riley welcomed the audience with the old anecdote of “Hootin Annie” and introduced the first act. The night’s format focused mainly on traditional folk songs and old ballads. Humor was regularly at hand with Larry Baione and Joe Kemph’s informal hour, and Tim Riley’s unforgettable “Mule-skinner”. Kathy Steinart and “Little Dickie”, her brother, added a light touch to the show with their rendi- tion of “Hello Dolly”. The pleased audience listen- ed to the memorable “Cruel War” sung by Pat Blowen and Linda Yoreo. Everyone was amused by our friendly guest, the smiling bee, and everyone actively participated in the sing-a-longs. The two months of preparation and four weeks of rehearsals, the headaches and the unexpected crisis all were well worth the time and combined effort put into the show. As the lights dimmed we left the auditorium with glowing pride, a sigh of relief and the frightening resolution to have another show next year! The camera caught these performers backstage after the show. and echoes “ROARING REVUE” The Enfield High School Auditorium was trans- formed into a twenties theatre Friday, March 25, 1966, when, as juniors, we presented the “Roaring Revue.” The show opened with the spotlight hitting M.C.’s Laura Baione and Jack Triolo. With music provided by the Enfield High Rag- time Band, the colorful chorus line did an authentic Charleston. Marlene Wilette entertained the audi- ence with her rendition of the striptease. Other acts of the quick-paced show included a hilarious “Bat- man” sequence; singing numbers by Kathie and Dickie Steinert: a solo by Prudy Robichaud; and the singing group of Linda Yoreo, Jane Sanger, Patty Blowen, and Gerry Schianca. The junior class show, “The Roaring Revue” was a roaring success. Welcoming the guests were M.C.’s Laura Baione and Jack (Charles 88 Lindberg) Triolo. FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB The Future Teachers Club is an organization which gives guidance and experience to students who plan a teaching career. The members hear first- hand information from experienced teachers and after assimilating various teaching techniques are given an opportunity to practice with grammar school children. Visits to many other schools pro- vide these future teachers with a well-rounded idea of all aspects of the teaching profession. Mrs. Mullen, the club's advisor, offers her teaching know- ledge to the students in order to better prepare them for this rewarding profession. The concepts gained from these activities will direct these students toward becoming efficient, responsible leaders of tomorrow’s youth. FUTURE NURSES CLUB The Future Nurses Club provides the opportunity for girls interested in the nursing profession to dis- cover many different aspects of the field. To enable them to become acquainted with different schools and careers available, catalogs and pamphlets are obtained for their use. Oftentimes, representatives are engaged to present a more vivid picture of their nursing programs. To contribute to this, students attending these schools are sometimes able to ac- company their representative. When convenience permits, the club itself tours some of these schools to become familiar with the general atmosphere. The services of the members are often gladly donated to blood banks or clinics. The club also engages in projects where aid or materials are given to sick or orphaned children. Other Lamplighters have mastered the techniques of theater make-up, wardrobe, sets, stage lighting, and sound. Each Lamplighter, whether a member of the cast or crew, passes through the progressive steps of the guild system as an apprentice, a journeyman, and a mas- ter. The club, one of the more popular activities, is open to any Enfield High student. Memories of working in a Lamplighter production will always glow in many of us who have shared this experi- ence. 100 acted, Lamplighters take a break during rehearsals of “Oklahoma!”. “OKLAHOMA!” The spectacular musical “Oklahoma!”, the first musical play presented on the Enfield High stage, had a record-breaking full house for five performances. This production was a milestone in the history of the drama guild. An excerpt was seen on color television, a ballet company emerged under the leadership of Janice Wojnar, and the cast and crew were composed of over two hundred students, including the Enfield High Concert Band. Outstanding stars of “Oklahoma!” from the class of ’67 included Dawne Robin- son, Kimball Martin, Nancy White, Tim Riley, John O’Dell, and Janice Wojnar. Greg Quinlan, Katie O’Brien, and Janice Wojnar of the ballet company practice their routines. ‘Oklahoma!” leads are coached by Mr. Perrone. In December, three one-act plays were featured. Linda Yoreo joined the list of spotlighted stars with her performance as a naive country girl in “Hello Out There”, as did Kristine Allen in “Impromptu”, and Peege Stevens in “The Devil and Daniel Web- ster”. Bizarre character makeup of “The Devil and Daniel Webster”, along with outstanding light and sound effects produced by Sue Jefferson and Bob Crawford, combined to launch the lamplighters’ Heritage Year off to a successful beginning. “Mr. Roberts,” the second of the Heritage Year productions, was presented in March, and in May the Lamplighters concluded Heri- tage Year with the musical revue, “So You Wanted to Come to America”, an original Lamplighter production. The revue portrayed the story of the immigrants coming to America. The script was written by Marianne Such, Kenny King, Jeff Buczacki, and Jan Ka- minsky; original music was written by David Isabelle; and original choreography was produced by Jan Wojnar. Mrs. Bigos’ Problems of Democracy Classes supplied the student registrars, and seniors registered to vote during their study halls. After having his name checked in, each senior would enter a voting machine to cast his vote for the “Nutmegs” or “Charter Oaks”. Upon leaving the machine the voter would have to check out again at a second panel of registrars. ELECTED OFFICIALS The newly elected town council and board of education met in the Town Hall on Wednesday morning, December 14. Their tour of the building exposed them to the general atmosphere of the center of our town government. At eight o’clock that evening the town council and board of education met with a large agenda on hand. The meeting was enacted just as it would have been if the real council and board members were presiding and it lasted just as long! At the close of the evening the issues that had been discussed included a loitering ordinance, a new junior and senior high school, a swimming pool in the high school, and a new central library. APPOINTED OFFICIALS One of the town council’s previous tasks was to appoint seniors to the posts of town officials for their term of one day. On December 14 all the appointees wrent to their respective offices in the Town Hall. Each town official had organized an informative presentation for his own student and the entire morning was devoted to familiarizing each senior with the functions and responsibilities of his position. The program proved to be a most worthwhile and interesting experience for all who participated. Thanks went to the Enfield Jaycees, who sponsored the program. in town government, APPOINTED OFFICIALS. The at- mosphere of our theme, “Younger than Spring- time”, was set with a decor of spring maypoles be- decked with daisies. The Host and Hostess, Donnie Christmas and Terry Cremona, greeted each couple. Charms with the design of the school ring were given as a re- membrance. The orchestra of Richard Linson pro- vided an aura of music to harmonize with the gala festivities. Highlighting the evening was a song by fellow student Dawne Robinson. Toward the close of the evening was the traditional Grand March led by the host and hostess. The end came all too soon for a wonderful eve- ning that will be remembered long after the spring flowers are gone. We, the expectant seniors-to-be, reluctant to see old friends leave, nevertheless looked forward to one more year and the unseen events it would bring. Under the direction of Angelo Sevarino, gen- eral chairman, the gym was transformed into a vibrant summer garden complete with foun- tain and fresh flowers, where Russell Tyler and Linda Porcello served as Host and Hostess. The A1 Jarvis Orchestra provided dance music until the late hours of the evening. The night ended with the crowning of Rick LaFleur and Betty Meskill as King and Queen of the departing seniors. Our cordial host and hostess, Roy King and Vicki Jones, greeted entering couples, and each girl re- ceived a gold and white program and a gold bell laden with mistletoe and holly. We danced under a ceiling of snowy-white streamers and gold balloons. The center of attrac- tion was an enormous Christmas tree adorned with gay ornaments. The enchanting atmosphere was completed as strains of “Winter Wonderland” and “Misty” float- ed out over the floor. Careful planning and learning of applied skills are necessary in order to reach the objectives of the group. Choosing a theme is only the preliminary step. Materials must be organized and correlated to the theme through- out the book. To adequately meet the demands of the work necessary for the completion of the year- book, various section editors were appointed. Under their supervision and with the cooperation of the other staff members, work began and deadline grew near. Weekend meetings became a necessity in or- der to meet them. Eventually the many pictures, captions, and the various descriptions of our many school clubs, be- gan to show the appearance of real accomplishment in the proud eyes of the yearbook staff. Coach Joe Lamana’s well-devised offense saw left-halfhack Russ Tyler hit paydirt on two occasions, scooting 8 yards the first time, and 10 yards the next. Having already added two points to one of Tyler’s scores. John Hayden scored from the three yard stripe just before halftime. Powerful fullback Danny Naughton got into the act, scoring from 12 yards away, and poised junior quarterback Paul Plath followed him minutes later on a 14 yard scamper. The rugged Raider defense again shone behind the efforts of seniors Bill Eaton and Randy Ladd, and junior stand-outs Frank Scalia, Gary Nolan, and Bill Fuller. Minnechaug’s high-scoring offense was next, but again the savage defense rose up, and protected an 18-0 victory. After three scoreless periods, the de- fense counted their second safety of the year, as Bill Eaton, John Ackerman, and Randy Ladd blitz- ed and floored the Minnechaug punter in the end zone. Moments later, John Hayden allayed any wor- ries about the final outcome, as he thundered 36 yards for a touchdown, behind a crisp block by sen- ior tri-captain John O’Dell. The other half of the Raider half-back combination, Russ Tyler, went over for the extra points. After John Ackerman re- covered a Falcon fumble, Danny Naughton plunged over for a score from the one yard line. Versatile Joe Nosal scored overland on a toss from Paul Plath for the extra points. This cliff- hanger saw senior left end Jim Arietti artfully fake and then outrun two defenders taking a pass from Russ Tyler, to knot the score 6-6 in the second half. With 1:51 remaining, Enfield took the ensuing kick- off after a South Hadley score and marched 6' yards to tally themselves. After two runs netted no yardage, Russ Tyler spiraled a long, crisp pass to sure-handed quarterback Paul Plath for a 51 yard gain. On the third play, Tyler swept his right flank for the touchdown. Here South Hadley crashed in to insure their victory, a heart-breaker for the Raiders. Enfield took measure of Longmeadow next 38- 22, in a hard-hitting and swift scramble for points. Paul Plath scored twice, once on a 27 yard pass from Russ Tyler, and again on a throw from John Hayden. The electrifying Hayden scored on a 75 yard run and a 6 yard run, and also netted two extra points. Tyler charged in from the seven yard line for another score. BASKETBALL The Enfield High Green Raiders, with an array of seasoned veterans and a promis- ing group of newcomers, opened their season with high hopes. Elected to serve as captains for the Green Wave were senior lettermen Russ Tyler, Dave Petursson, and John Ravenola. Trade High School of Springfield opened the Green Raider season on a sour note by defeating Enfield 86-69. Russ Tyler scored 38 points, benefiting from the classy playmaking of Dave Petrusson. The Raiders then got their first taste of Connecticut basketball in over fifteen years, and were overcome twice by Norwich Free Academy, 77-57 and 60-57.. Commerce High School became the Raiders first victim of the cam- paign, falling 63-40. Russ Tyler with 24 points, and Dave Petursson with 12 points led the Raiders. Enfield opened their Valley Wheel season with an impressive 76-60 victory over East Longmeadow. Russ Tyler hit 20 points, Jim Arietti caged 16, and John Ravenola popped 15, to pace the scoring. The Raiders got into foul trouble and a late rally fell short as they dropped two games behind in the Valley Wheel. Enfield redeemed themselves by defeating Minnechaug 86-62, as Russ Tyler hit a career high of 39 points. Sparked by the strong second half performance of Richard Gwozdz, the Raiders continued their high-scoring ways with a 81-48 conquest of East Longmeadow. Led by a third quarter one-man show by senior playmaking specialist Dave Peturs- son, Enfield downed defending champion Agawam 72-64. Petursson shoveled in 25, and Russ Tyler chipped in with 23 in the Raider upset win. Enfield avenged their opening game loss to Trade by sending the Beavers home with a 80-67 loss pinned to their tails. Tyler paced the Raiders with 28 points and Jim Arietti played a fine floor game. Longmeadow High School negated any Enfield title aspirations with a stunning 65-57 victory. The Raiders recovered from the Longmeadow catastrophe by downing Easthampton 89-78. Four Raiders hit double figures, with Tyler hitting 31, John Ravenola powering through 19, Dave Petursson popping 14, and Jim Arietti adding 12. The season wasn’t quite as disappointing as its mark may indicate. Coach Dave Keaney did a fine job in this rebuilding season, as the Raiders were in contention in most of their games. En- field seemed to play its best against a powerful Long- meadow squad, and with a few breaks, might have de- feated the Lancers each time. The lone victory of the season came against a fine Easthampton team with a 2-1 score. The Green Wave was hampered by not having their own rink. The Raiders were forced to play all home games in South Windsor and played many topnotch league teams. FAREWELL PROM The underclassmen bid a final farewell to us on the memorable evening of June 23, 1967, with the Spanish atmosphere, “No Te Olvides.” Climaxing the evening was the traditional crowning of the parting King and Queen. For the first time the titles were shared by two couples because of a tie. Co-Kings and Co-Queens were Terry Cremona and Don Christmas, and Vicki Jones and Tim Riley. Chosen for the Queen’s Court were Laura Baione, Carmie Reale, Marilyn Sawicki, and Nancy White. Greeting the guests at the door were the junior Host and Hostesses, Nick Galluccio and Fran Man- gini. 4 The Crand March pauses a moment tor the photographer. Students take a break with refreshments.
