MAURICE F. SMITH With sincere appreciation for Ins guidance and interest during our years in the Enfield High School and for his tireless efforts in our behalf, we, the class of 1964, dedicate this ECHO to Mr. Maurice F. Smith, Superintendent of Schools. 2 Preface In I960 the stream of grammar school and junior high school merged to form a small river, which, as the class of ’64, flowed slowly at first, trying to find the right course. Around every bend awaited some new tributary, which added a quality to its character. Among these were classes attended, extra-curricular activities, and the many personal experiences. Each tributary fed the river, enriching it in strength and knowledge. At times the river churned with unexpected whirlpools and rapids. On other occasions it encountered snags and was slowed almost to a standstill. With increased effort the obstacles were overcome, the river surged forward and once again flowed smoothly, acquiring depths of interest. If a river is to run true to course, it must have banks to contain and guide it; so too, did this river have banks. The faculty and administration guided, showed the direction, and kept the river flowing toward its goal. During the entire trip, the course had been plotted for the successful arrival at its destination, where the river enters the sea. That destination has been reached; now the ocean looms, vast and unknown. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Rivers are highways that move on, and bear us whither we wish to go.” Blaise Pascal Rivers are highways that move on . . The river of education has and always will move on. Man, even in his most destructive moods, cannot deter this river's eternal flow. He can only hope to navigate its mighty current as it winds forward. It is inevitable and unpredictable. For all those to whom God gave minds it is a necessary and inescapable journey. It is a course which touches on the shores of the bizarre and the simple; the ugly and the beautiful. To some it is a fascinating awakening to the arts and sciences. To others it is a wonderful study of the universe and its mysteries. Yet, for too many, it is a lifelong and difficult education in the hardships of life. . . And bear us whither we wish to go.” We here wish to enjoy the wonders of our journey down this river. To those of you who have taken a part in helping to make this wish a reality — we thank you. Thank you for preserving the ideals, principles and beliefs of our country. Thank you for the responsibilities that we inherit as the new perpetrators of these historically cherished gifts. Please give us your blessings on our determination to answer the demands of these responsibilities. Please wish us success in sharing these gifts that have helped to make our trip down this river more fruitful. So, with these gifts in our possession, we dedicate ourselves to the many for whom the journey has been a life-long and difficult education in the hardships of life. It is our hope that someday all the people of the world will be able to chart their own course on the river that moves on. 16 Class History - 1964 Michael Blowen Many sources join to form a river Rains fall, snows melt, waters creep forth in brooks, stretch out on the passive land and, eventually, if countless other conditions prevail, a river gathers force and moves on toward the sea. When we, the class of 1964, entered Enfield High School in September of I960, the course we were to follow already evidenced the shaping influence of innumerable forces. It was not until that fall, however, that we came together as a class to combine our resources and surge forward toward a common goal. In tracing our history we recall the ex- periences we shared which impressed an indelible mark upon the class united. On entering Enfield High School as bewildered and inquisitive freshmen, the year 'T964'' seemed a goal far beyond our reach. As freshmen we were in a new environ- ment, but our willingness to learn became known to the upperclassmen. Unconsciously we added force to our river by building a strong foundation as the future leaders of the student body. We began by molding lasting friendships with new acquaintances. As we became aware of our status at Enfield, the election of class officers leaped upon us. We chose, to lead us through these formative years, Joe Alaimo, president; Bill Bromage, vice-president; Bev Andrik, secre- tary; and Barbara Hill, treasurer. Our student council repre- sentatives were Rich Post and Jan Daly. Leadership was not the only field in which honor was brought to our class. On the field of athletics Tom Tyler, Bill Bromage, Jim Vella, John Mitchell, Ron Goulet, Bob Bania, Bill Schreffler, John Skower, Bob Currie, Ted Plamondon, and Walt Gagne achieved recognition on the gridiron. On the floor of the basketball court, sharpshooter Tom Tyler, Bill Bromage, Mike Malley, Ted Plamondon, Steve Mai ley. Rich Grzelak, and Paul Staszko suppressed the opposition. On the baseball diamond Bill Bromage, Bob Bania, A1 Bryla, Jim Vella, Bob Currie, and Ted Plamondon led the offensive division while Tom Tyler and Rich Grzelak held any challengers dumbfounded with their superb pitching performances. On the stage of the Drama Guild, Bev Andrik and Pat Bazinet w'ere the freshmen performers in the production of A Bell For Adano. Despite the confusion and havoc which our sophomore year brought, the current, established in our freshman year, continued to take direction and gather force. The new four million dollar high school was under construction which eventually resulted in the division of our class. Those of us taking the academic course attended A.D. Higgins School while the others enrolled in the business course continued on at the old high school. In the latter part of February the academic students transferred into the newly completed arts and science wing of our present high school. If the freshman year was a period of formation, then the sophomore year must be described as a year of reformation. During that year our class was separated physically but the spirit instilled in us formed a tighter bond. Because we had been separated, the officers elected the previous year retained their positions. Tom Tyler, Bill Bromage, John Skower, Bob Currie, Scott Russotto, Ted Plamondon, Bob Bania, Walt Gagne, and Ron Goulet continued their hard-nose press against our foes in the suburban league. Bill Bromage, John Porcello, Tom Tyler, Ted Plamondon, and the Malley Boys, Steve and Mike, resumed their quest for the Valley Wheel Junior Varsity Championship. So, too, was it with our famed baseball team. Tom Tyler, Bill Bromage, Rich Grzelak, Bob Bania, Bob Currie, Walt Zywiak, and Ted Plamondon continued to wear down the opposition's ego. Mr. Gross' Drama Guild continued in their traditional production of plays with the outstanding The Andersonville Trial with Scott Russotto, Maria Johnson, Bev Andrik, Bob Waskiel, Pat Zazinct, and Ed Zawistowski. Perhaps the most impressive event of our junior year was the period of campaigning for class offices. Vivid, expressive, and original are the only words to describe the various techniques used by those seeking office. The long, overdue elections brought into office a set of fresh ideas and new faces. Dan Riley was elected president; Chick Alaimo, vice-president; Marcia Della Rocca, secretary; and John Douglas, treasurer. Also elected were Barbara Hill, Ed Kiernan, Charles Rinaldi, Marilyn Mokrycki, John Porcello, and Bill Bromage as our student council representatives. In junior year Dan Riley replaced George Chappell as editor-in-chief of the Student Ticker, and immediate renova- tions took place. Instead of the usual mimeographed copy published in the past, the staff decided to include pictures and have the paper published by a professional printer. Our Junior Prom, La Soire Parisienne, under the leadership of Robert Kozaczka proved to be a resounding success. Bill Bromage and Ginny Lane were chosen host and hostess for this affair. Robert Bania and Matthew Samborski were our delegates to Nutmeg Boys’ State while Marilyn Mokrycki carried the Enfield banner to Girls' State. John Berg and Paul Catania represented the Hi-Y in the annual Connecticut Y. M. C. A. Youth and Government program at the State Capitol. On the athletic field, the river was beginning to stabilize its course. With Tom Tyler as quarterback, the varsity placed second behind Longmeadow and compiled a brilliant 6-1 record. Ted Plamondon, Bill Bromage, Tom Tyler, Mike Malley, Steve Malley, Rich Grzelak and Paul Staszko all moved up to the varsity basketball and we again finished second behind a highly-touted Easthampton five. In baseball we had our troubles, nevertheless we were grooming new talent for our senior year. The school play again proved to be a significant aspect of school activity as John Patricks’ The Hasty Heart was performet! by the Drama Guild. Chick Alaimo, Scott Rus- sotto, Peter DiRosa, Maria Johnson, Carmen Cimino, Mike Halpin, and Bob Waskiel were our thespians. Who will ever forget Bob Waskiels’ command performance in the leading role? At our final assembly, awards were presented for superior efforts in bookkeeping, stenography, typing, and American History. Honors were bestowed upon Karen Brooks, Susan Browne, Barbara Hill, and Paul Stroich respectively. At last, our senior year arrived. We were then able to see the mouth of the river in the distance. Our class, the respected and idolized group in the school, set the standards for our underclassmen. We had sprouted from inferior freshmen to responsible seniors, from immaturity toward maturity, and had grown in depth, insight, and knowledge. In this final year we elected Dan Riley, president; Matthew Alaimo, vice-president; Jean Stevens, treasurer; and Marcia DellaRocca, secretary. To the floor of the student council we sent John Berg, Charles Rinaldi, Mike Halpin, Barbara Roth, Pete DiRosa, and Edw-ard Kiernan. John Berg and Charles Rinaldi were chosen President and Treasurer of the council, respectively. Early in the year, under the guidance of our senior class officers and the student council members, a very successful and profitable Hootenanny was held to help defray gradua- tion expenses. On the field of battle our Raiders stood up and proved, once more, that they were formidable foes. Tom Tyler brought recognition to Enfield as he was chosen the number one quarterback in the suburban league. In charge of generating a feeling of enthusiasm within the student body were our cheerleaders: Bev Andrik, captain; Marsha Bridge, Ginny Lane, and Barbara Arietti. The seniors who participated in the majorettes were Maureen Ryan and Cheryl Martin. Again on stage, the members of the Drama Group turned out a splendid play with The Teahouse of the August Moon. Bob Waskiel was again unforgettable as Fishby. Also included in the cast were Peter DiRosa as Hakini, Chick Alaimo as Oshira. Our river is now at its destination. The waters that united to reach a common goal must again separate but not without having undergone change. Some of us will immediately assume the responsibilities of making our place in the world while others will go on to higher education. But wherever we go or whatever we do, we shall forever hold sacred our memories of Enfield High School which was not merely a building to us but a giant stepping stone in our quest for recognition. We are all aware of what we have received from our attendance here. Let us also hope that by our years of studying, working and playing together, we have left something of value for those who will follow us. These were of course capped by a most enjoyable senior year. But whenever we think back to our high school life we will not be able to forget one saddening day, November 22, 1963. This is the day on which our principal interrupted our last period class to tell us of a shooting. This is the day which sent us home fear- ful to hear any news. This is the day that sent us away from school for four days only to return to find the flag of our country flying at half mast over our school, at half mast but, thank God, still flying. FEATURES Of course, I carry it in my hip pocket. Happiness is a quiet corner in the library. 65 Host and Hostess Bill Bromage and Ginny Lane General Chairman — Bob Kozaczka Soiree Parisienne On the beautiful spring evening of May 3, 1963, couples danced to the strains of Eddy Walenta's Band at the Junior Prom, Soiree Parisienne. The host and hostess, Bill Bromage and Ginny Lane, greeted us as we entered the French Cafe. Each table was covered by a red-checkered tablecloth with a wine bottle as a centerpiece. A fountain encircled by flowers added to the Parisian atmosphere. The evening came to an end with the French National Anthem and the Grand March led by the host and hostess. Committee Chairmen: Seated, left to right: Carol Sideravage, Joanne Filossie, Betty Chickosky, Jean Stevens, Marcia DellaRocca. Standing: Mike Blowen, John Berg, Bob Kozaczka, John Porcello. 68 Another free dinner! The Grand March 69 It’s only a prom, Jackie. Not a wedding! Snowflake Ball On January 30, 1964, the class of 1964 held its Senior Prom, The Snow Flake Ball.” As the couples entered and were greeted by the host and hostess, John Douglas and Joanne Szulc, they were captured by the mood of the prom, emphasized by the warm music of Eddy Walenta and his band, and by the glistening snowflakes floating from the ceiling and drifting across the walls. As the evening drew to an end, the last snowflake melted in the glow reflected in each departing couple. Host and Hostess, John Douglas and Joanne Szulc. Farewell Prom On June 21, 1963 the Junior Class presented the Farewell Prom as a last honor to the graduating class of 1963. On a clear, calm June evening the class of 1963 danced in a nostalgic atmosphere created by the scen- ery, and the music of the Fascinations. Prom goers were greeted by their host and hostess, Don Janezic and Cherie Martin, who later crowned the King and Queen, William Norris and Betsy Baker. At twelve o’clock the couples bade farewell to Enfield High School as they strode away from Mem- ory Lane.” COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN First row, left to right: Joanne Szulc, Ginny Lane, Jackie Fregeau, Donna Ravenola. Second row: John Nosal, General Chairman; John Berg. 72 Student Council The Enfield High School Student Council began the year by assuming the task of rewriting its consti- tution for the purpose of up-dating it. Council officers elected were John Berg, President; Kathleen Berg, Vice-President; Jane Kozlowski, Sec- retary; Charles Rinaldi, Treasurer. A steering com- mittee, headed by Pol Holt, was formed to assist the officers in alleviating the council of extra, time-con- suming work during meetings. The Student Council joined the National Associa- tion of Student Councils. It also belongs to a local group which helps promote better relationships between Student Councils in the Valley Wheel. This year a summary of each meeting was read over the intercom to inform the student body of all transacted business. The council initiated a hall patrol to help traffic move smoothly so that the students made maximum use of the passing time. Another new project was a hootenanny broadcasted over radio sta- tion WTIC. The proceeds helped to build up the scholarship fund sponsored by the council. The twenty-eight members of the Student Council worked hard to improve the school and develop a good relationship between the student body and the faculty and administration. They learn what it means to own, manage, and work for a business enterprise, and gain'experience in keeping records, producing and selling a product, paying and receiving wages, and using capital. This year there were four Junior Achievement companies sponsored by local business and industrial firms in operation. Achievers from Enfield High as well as from Somers High School participated in the program. 74 SENIOR ENFIELD BUSINESS MANAGERS Front row, Itft to right: Joan Grondski, Susan Harscheid, Nancy Vanderscoff, Karen Brooks. Enfield Business Managers Club The Enfield Business Managers Club was organized in the fall of our junior year with membership open to the student body. The purpose of the club is to aid the school in any of its business transactions and give the members a chance to advance their knowledge of business through practical experience. The E.B.M. Club was very successful in seeking advertisers and planning the program for the 1963 school play, The Hasty Heart. In the spring of our junior year the club sponsored a Play Day and a record hop and organized the School Store. Supplying the student body with many of its needs, the School Store proved a commendable success during our senior year. In order that the girls be able to have such an event-filled year, money had to be raised for transportation. The girls raised the money by holding a canned-goods drive during the Christmas holiday. 78 FUTURE TEACHERS' CLUB OFFICERS Left to right: Betty Chickowski, Fred Romano, Joanne Szulc, Kathy Berg. Future Teachers’ Club The purpose of the Future Teachers’ Club is to stimulate interest in teaching and to explore career possibilities within the field. With Mrs. Elizabeth Mullen and Mrs. Helen Brill as advisors, the club members have taken field trips to local elementary schools and have enjoyed programs featuring teachers in specialized areas. Seniors have partici- pated in a teacher aide program for a period of six weeks. As its major service project of the year, the club has sponsored Kumiko Watanabe, a foreign student from Japan, on the senior class trip to Washington, D. Band Since our graduating class has entered Enfield High we have witnessed the establishment of the best high school band around. When we first entered the auditorium of our new school, we were surprised by the completely new sound of our band. Under the able leadership of Mr. Leonard DeMaio, the band soon became welcome at all assemblies, football and basketball games and concerts. Toward the end of our senior year, plans were being made for the band to make a record of some of their favorite melodies. Certainly our band has become a part of our school of which we can be proud and which is a great asset to our school and our class. 80 First row, left to right: Nancy Rex, Marie Falbo, Betty Jansma, Sue Duprey, Pauline Orr, Louise Jutras, Teresa Lavell, Deborah Allen. Their angelic voices have brought joy and entertainment to audiences of all ages who have attended their programs. Two productions presented annually are the Christmas and spring concerts. As special attractions many service organizations have asked a section of the glee club called the Echoes to perform at meetings. Whenever a special assembly is called for our own student body, the glee club provides an added attraction. Through his untiring efforts, Mr. Anthony Perone has molded this fine group of singers into a well coordinated vocal group. Student Ticker One of the greatest accomplish- ments in the school during the reign of the class of '64 was the development of a high qualify school newspaper. We have seen a transition from a stack of Mimeo- graphed papers to a professional looking journal. Each class had representatives who contributed articles of interest to the paper. Along with these were outstanding editorials and reports on the school athletic teams. Responsible for the progress and success of the Ticker” were the editors. For the past two years the staff has had capable editors in Dan Riley and Mike Blowen. As a result of the hard work of all the members of the staff and the support from the student body, the student ticker has become a publica- tion of which all can be proud. 1964 Editor, Mike Blowen. 83 Front row, left to right: Marsha Bridge, Diane Gelinas, Kathy Thompson, Paula Ricard, Bev Andrik, Barbara Roth, Marie Curcio. The task set before them, the staff met, organized, and spent long, sometimes tedious hours, in the blooming stages of the book, laying out pictures, and writing the copy. It was the task of the staff to record the events and achievements of their class; the classmates themselves provided the material. Although these years at Enfield High School will always remain in our thoughts, it is hoped that this yearbook will recall many years hence, a few nostalgic memories of the days we were privileged to spend here. 84 The executive department of the staff discusses future plans. Bob McMullen, Harry Tatoian, Tom Peraro, Kathy Thompson, and Diane Gelinas supervise the work of Marie Curcio. 86 Amateur, Vicki McMichael. E.H.S. Hootenanny The senior class started its money raising activities off this year with a resoundingly, successful hoote- nanny. Held on November 27, 1963, the event netted $200 for the class. The entertainment was provided by the profes- sional folk singing group of the New England Folk Society. Some of those singers include Jay Thompson, Marcia Smith, and the Bay State Singers. Vicki Mc- Michael was the local talent spotlighted. This hootenanny program was run by the com- bined efforts of the senior class officers and student council members. It proved entertaining for all who attended. Professional, Jay Thompson. 87 Top row, left to right: John Porcello, Bob Waskiel, Marianne Such. Second row; John Nosal, Pat Maynard, Bernice Kotfila. Drama Club During the past three years the Drama Club experienced many interesting changes. The Lamp- lighters left the ranks of high school theater and emerged as competent Thespians. Under the guidance of Mr. Franklin S. Gross, such plays as The Anderson- ville Trial, A Bell for Adano, The Hasty Heart, and Teahouse of the August Moon were presented. With the introduction of the new guild system, many acting and stage hand techniques were pre- sented. Under this system students can advance from apprentice to master. When they have become ex- perienced members, they can become Lamplighters. The club officers for 1963-1964 were Peter Di- Rosa, president; Michael Halpin, vice-president; Pat Maynard, secretary; John Porcello, executive secretary; Charles Alaimo, social director. A ski club under the capable guidance of Mr. Frank Gawle was introduced at Enfield. The enthusiastic response that the members showed was quite promising for future years. Early last December the group organized a fund raising dance, entitled Winter Carnival. The dance netted enough profit to enable the group to finance a mid-winter vacation ski trip to the Snow Basin in Cummington, Massachusetts. It has broadened student knowledge of proper practices and procedures and has increased our under- standing, interest, and participation in library work. The library aides abide by a constitution and elect officers each year. This year's officers were: Diane Gelinas, president; Camille Verizzi, vice-president; Nancy Luczai, secretary; Carolyn Gelinas, treasurer. The officers conduct monthly meetings, with Miss Robideau as advisor. The group has organized a committee to produce book reviews and another to recruit new members. In December the aides attended a lecture given by Mrs. Adams, the Enfield Junior High School librarian who spoke on the particular aspects of her specialization in the field of library work. Washington Trip On February 24, 1964, members of the senior class left Enfiield for the annual five day trip to Washing- ton, D. C. Buses were rented for the entire week and transported students to and around the Capitol. While in Washington, such places of interest as the Capitol Building, the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Washington Monument were toured. Each day brought more tours of land- marks of our Capitol. The return trip was interrupted by an eight hour stopover in New York, where students were allowed to do whatever they pleased. The travelers returned Saturday morning, tired but enriched with unforgettable experiences. 93 95 Now, to pack? Mr. Lamana deserves credit for filling up the deficiencies left by last years’ seniors and for sprucing a great team into shape for this tough Suburban League. Enfield hosted Longmeadow in the opener. They riddled with our defense and it looked like a repetition of last years’ performance. The first game was lost but that didn’t stop the green wave. The Raiders then went on a safari to try to tame the Lions of Ludlow. The ferocious Lions proved to be a little too much for our boys as they went down to defeat for the second time in as many games. Hooray!!! The offensive and defensive units of the Enfield eleven finally woke up and shattered a startled Trade team. They passed and ran the ball under Tom Tyler, our senior quarterback, as they marched up and down the field as if it were a practice session. Tyler ran for one touchdown and completed a 41 yard pass play to Bill Roberts and one good for 35 yards to end Ted Plamondon. Bob Currie, our fancy halfback, ran for two touchdowns and sophomore, Jay Fuller, bulled his way into paydirt from the five. The Enfieldites then traveled to Chicopee where they added their second victory of the season. The Raiders surprised everyone with their razzle-dazzle Currie to Tyler pass play and Ron Goulet, Currie’s colleague, scored on a brilliant 64 yard spurt. The other tally was added when Tyler kept it on an end sweep from the eleven. Enfield was now ready to tangle with the Panthers of Palmer. Enfield passed and ran the Palmer defense wild as they 102 added their third victory in succession. Tom Tyler, Ron Goulet, and sophomore Gerry McDougal, all scored touchdowns and the defensive line and secondary were exceptionally stingy as the Green Wave sent the Panthers down to defeat. They say a rolling stone gathers no moss” and our boys planned to prove just that as they journeyed to East Longmeadow. Ron Goulet, Bob Currie, Tom Tyler, and Ted Plamondon all figured big in this game as they trounced the Spartans. The defense again held up and the Raiders held on for their fourth consecutive triumph. A highly-favored Enfield team returned home to play the cellar-dwellers of Minnechaug Regional. The Green Wave capitalized on short runs capping off long drives. Ron Goulet, Bill Roberts, and Jay Fuller scored the tallies for the winners and our excellent defensive unit turned in another fine performance. Sluggo Moynahan and the Tigers of South Hadley came to call on the Raiders for the finale of the 1963 Suburban League Season. Enfield scored first but then the visitors took over to steal the show. Maurice showed us some fancy running along with some heads-up ball playing as he led the Tigers to a perfect 8-0-0 record to capture the coveted crown of the Suburban League. So went this past football season. We saw some fine sportsmanship, plenty of good old school spirit, and a variety of fine players. Our boys proved that they weren’t just pushovers as they racked up 158 points and held their opponents to 82. Our hats off to Tom Tyler, Ron Goulet, Bob Currie, Bill Bromage, John Skower, Walt Gagne, Scott Russotto, Skip Carpenter, and Ted Plamondon, who are all seniors and will be leaving our hallowed halls” this year. TRIBUTE TO UNDERCLASSMEN A special note is owed Tom Quinlan who struggled in that line and played such a competitive defensive game against South Hadley. He will be back next year along with Paul Javorski, Bill Roberts, our illustrious fullback. Jay Fuller and his partner Gerry McDougal. So our student body need never worry about a good football team in the years to come, with fine young blood like this and the inspiration and desire which is instilled, as tradition, into every Enfield football player who ever donned a uniform. Ed Kiernan Another carry for Gerry. 107 Underclassmen working the ball toward a deciding goal. Soccer The Enfield High School soccer team recently completed its initial season of play with a respectable 2-3-1 record. This year the opposition consisted of combinations of varsity and junior varsity players. The new team made a good showing, despite the fact that games were at the opposing team’s field and the opposition was more experienced in organized soccer. Coached by Mr. Fogarty and Mr. Easton, Enfield got off to a fast start, edging South Windsor, 2-1, and beating East Windsor, 3-1. In their lone home game, which was a cold and wet one, South Windsor tri- umphed, 3-1. Enfield suffered their second defeat at the hands of East Windsor, who nipped them by a score of 2-1. In the following contest, Enfield and Granby battled to a 1-all tie. Enfield suffered their only shutout when they were defeated 2-0 by Ellington in the final game of the year. Cheerleaders Enfield High has a group which has contributed greatly to the school’s display of spirit. This state- ment can be accredited to the Varsity Cheerleaders. Hours of practice went into making this squad one of the liveliest ones Enfield has seen. During football season, they led students in car parades from A. D. Higgins to the high school field for a game. In addition to the ten regular cheerleaders, there was a mascot; Dickie Lynes, Bev Andrik’s cousin, did an excellent job and got the attention from everyone in the crowd. When basketball season arrived, the cheerleaders' liveliness was still there. The crowds reacted with outstanding enthusiasm to the familiar beat, Let's go With the help of their advisor, Miss Fitzgerald, captain Bev Andrik, senior members, Barbara Arietti, Marsha Bridge, and Ginny Lane proved that hours of hard work paid off by seeing the difficult cheers performed, by hearing the crowd's enthusiasm, and by seeing the players’ reaction to their continuous spirit. Enfield played an 18 game schedule this season in the expanded Valley Wheel. Two of these were with independent Chicopee Comprehensive. Coach Sugal- ski and Mr. Gawle assisted Mr. Angelica this year with the coaching duties. The senior members were Bill Bromage, Rich Grzelak, Mike Malley, Steve Malley, Ted Plamondon, Paul Staszko, and sharpshooting Tom Tyler. Steve Malley and Bill Bromage, also a top scorer, were especially effective in rebounding this season. Mike Malley replaced playmaker Frank Pillirerri. ef- fectively, too. Tom Tyler averaged 13 points per game to lead the Raiders on the scoring department. Enfield showed good balance, experience, and depth. The team averaged over 50 points per game and allowed the opposition an average of about 42 points per contest. On December 6, the Raiders warmed up for the coming season by attending the big jamboree at South Hadley. Enfield played its opener at home, hosting the Valley Wheel's newest member, East Long- meadow, whom they beat, 51-30. Enfield then hit the road, winning a close one from Palmer, 43-39. Next, Ware came to Enfield and was beaten, 51-35. The Raiders dumped Agawam, 57-52, then traveled to Longmeadow and beat the Lancers in still another close game, 46-44, boosting their record to 5-0. Then, on January 7, Easthampton disappointed the huge home throng here by edging Enfield, 49-44, in a hard- fought thriller. The Raiders bounced back, though, and held on to down Ludlow, 56-41, in a game closer than the score would indicate. In an independent contest, Enfield defeated Chicopee Comprehensive, 55-38. Then, after downing Minnechaug and East Longmeadow easily, the Raiders were upset by Aga- wam, 51-50, much to the surprise of everyone. Enfield had no trouble downing Palmer, Ware, and Longmeadow in following games, but again ran up against their old foe, Easthampton, at the Eagles' gym. 1 ne huge Enfield throng sweated through the key game, both physically and mentally, and saw the Raid- ers’ attack fall short, with Enfield bowing, 51-46. This brought their record to 11-3, giving Easthampton a game advantage in the all-important loss column with only two more league contests on our schedule for the Valley Wheel. The final two games were played on the opponents’ courts. Chicopee Comprehensive upset us 39-36. Minnechaug spoiled Enfield's chances for the Valley Wheel title with a victory of 46-45. 112 Tom Tyler scoring the final two points of the game. The Enfield High Green Raiders, having wrapped up regular season play with four consecutive losses, played their first game in the Connecticut schoolboy basketball tournament against Fairfield Prep. The Enfield Raiders didn't look too bad until the closing minutes of the second half. Then the Fairfield squad dropped in two baskets to give themselves a five-point 25-20 halftime edge. The Fairfield Prep Jesuits must have concocted some powerful voodoo Saturday night during their halftime locker-room pep talk. They stormed into the third quarter and scored seven consecutive points to boost their lead to 32-20. Girls’ Varsity Basketball The Enfield High Girls' Basketball Team completed its second season with 4 wins and 5 loses. This is a marked improvement over last year's record of 1 and 7. The team is composed of about 20 girls, who are chosen by the coach, Mrs. Bryant. The girls’ team is a member of the Valley Wheel, playing Ware, Ludlow, Monson, and Palmer High School. The girls also played Our Lady of the Angels Academy as an extra game. Much credit should be given to Mrs. Bryant, whose unselfish efforts made this team possible. There was much team spirit present, and the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves, not only those playing, but also those cheering the team on to victory from the bench.” 119 Practice session before a big game. This year, more than ever, the girls worked hard at making Enfield proud of the high school major- ettes. During football season, Mau- reen Ryan acted as head majorette. During basketball season, Cherie Martin and Maureen Ryan served as co-captains. A new addition was made to the squad this year. A mascot performed with the girls at basketball games. This was Enfiield's first invasion into Western Massa- chusetts since the spring of I960. Now Enfield track- sters will be competing in class A. Western Massachusetts hasn’t seen the Green Raiders for some years, but we have not been idle all this time. Mr. Gawle and Mr. Cerrato revived En- field’s interest in track last year. The 1963 team was the first track team formed in the new high school. The squad had one meet with Suffield High and won a smashing victory, 74-25. The team showed it had the potential to win, especially in the running events. The members of this graduating class who partici- pated in the team last year are listed by the events they took part in. Ron Goulet, Ed Prajzner, and Dick Tarantino entered the 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, and the 880 yard relay race. The 440, 880, and mile were run by Ed Richmond, Phil Malinoski, Chick Alaimo, Mike Malley, Bob Prajzner, and Rich Nuccio. The broad jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, and javeline were manned by Scott Russotto, Skip Carpenter, Duane Lavalette, George Bartosiewicz, and Dave Klezos. Cross-Country Cross-Country running was introduced at Enfield High School last fall. This was a preliminary season, as was track last spring. It is hoped that our high school can produce a team capable of competing on a full varsity level next fall. Cross-Country running consists of running a distance of two to five miles on a course over hilly terrain such as that of our school grounds. Many of our seniors welcomed the opportunity of participating in this sport last fall as a means of keeping in shape for this spring's varsity track team. 126 Going my way? Mr. Easton puts the boys through their paces. We can even do it lying down. And were out for VICTORY! Indications are a greater number of high school graduates are now enrolled in our colleges and universities than ever before in the history of our country. This is most encouraging, for it demonstrates a realiza- tion on the part of our youth, a desire to equip themselves better for the tasks that lie ahead.
