As each of us pass through the doors of dear Enfield High, we are able to look back with pride upon the school which has done so much in preparing us for life. No one knows what the future holds, but whatever tasks we may be called upon to meet, Enfield has prepared us well. The ideals set down by our instructors have given us a goal to strive for. Already some of us have reached our peaks in scholarship, leadership, or friendship, but many more of us have years of work ahead before attaining these. While we are struggling to reach our separate goals, may the principles taught at Enfield remain with us. As the years pass, it will be a great pleasure for me to look back upon our school days together and recali each of you as important individuals in the class of 1948. May God bless us and may our future years be as happy as the past years spent at our beloved Enfield. Farewell Class of '48. We, the Class of 1948, still sane and sound, do freely and without duress of any kind, hereby publish this, our last will and testament, declaring null and void all previous wills, testaments, codicils and instruments hertofore made. We earnestly desire that these, our last earthly wishes, be carried out as hereinafter directed. We request that the principal and the faculty of Enfield High School be appointed our executors in the distribu- tion of our worldly goods. ITEM 1. To the school, its faculty, and administrators, we leave our most sincere thanks for the opportunity of attending this higher institution for the privilege of learning. ITEM 2. To our beloved principal, Mr. Tatoian, we leave our heartfelt thanks for his sincere guidance of this tractable class. ITEM 3. The following bequests are made in good faith, hoping that they will be received in the same spirit. 1. The Seniors leave all the gum stored under the chairs to the Juniors who are too poor to buy their own. 2. Bobby Persano is to receive the combined athletic abilities of Stan Halgas and Carm Nuccio, but the initiative he must furnish himself. 3. Our very capable president. Bill Hunt, leaves his execu- tive position to his successor, hoping that he may lead his own class to even greater heights. 4. Helen Chesla leaves her popularity and all around personality to any Junior who is capable enough to deserve it, otherwise it is to be held in escrow until such time as a worthy one can be found. 5. Mr. Fowler's first period Trig class leaves the talents of its male chorus and bubble gum champs to next year's class so that they may distract their instructor from sines and cosines and other trivia. 6. Marjorie Hathaway bequeaths her attractiveness to her twin, Joan Devine of the Freshman Class; however, the heir must at all times surround herself with the same dignity exemplified by the grantor. 7. Henry Zybura and Frankie Aloisa leave their unexpired copyright of their pep and corny jokes to Hippo Triola. 8. Maestro Alan Sheehan bequeathes his musical abil- ities to Joe Gaetani, the Paderewski of the Junior Class. 9. Sophie Demosthenes Bonk leaves her oratorical ability to Mary Gnapp, who, it is hoped, will con- tinue the custom of winning oratorical honors for Enfield. 10. Mary Orefice leaves all her boyfriends, except one, to Vera Puleri and Wanda Panek. (They are too num- erous for any one girl to handle.) WILL 11. Benny Gambino bequeathes his perfect personality to Tommy Richardson, with the injunction that he use aca- demic polish to brighten it. 12. Ernie Lagel bequeathes his administrative ability to Joey Nuccio, but his inspiration, Statia, he takes with him. 13. Miss Brakel's speech class leaves its reputation for not learning its lessons to next year's class, hoping that they will know how to study. 14. Kitty Persano leaves her vim and vigor as a cheer- leader to Helen Chmielewski to add to her own already well-developed pep. 15. Jane Gordon beqeuathes her cuteness to Lola De Caro with the provision that she cultivate a little coyness. 16. Gilbert Gagne leaves his reputation for not getting his work done to any Junior who can be half as lazy with- out trying twice as hard. 17. Betty Emery leaves her loftiness to Ann Bolyston. 18. Norma Sheridan is to receive Peggy Bruno's sweet voice. 19. The Seniors leave Mr. Nigro (what is left of him) to the mercifulness of the Junior Class. 20. John Mangini bequeathes his artistic ability to Tommy Parakilas. His ideas, however, he takes with him. 21. Billy Egan leaves his Atlas shoulders to Lawrence Wat- son. 22. Eddie Lynch bequeathes his attractiveness to girls to Bobby Persano. 23. Richard Oliver leaves his gargantuan size to Eddie Ambrosini. 24. Margaret Garner leaves her lovely hair to that cute Freshman, Janet Wojcieszek. 25. Rosaline Marut receives Barbara Merrill's intelligence and excellent posture. 26. Benny Gambino and Alan Sheehan leave all their giggles to anyone who wants them. 27. The Three Musketeers, Joanne Cormier, Mary Di Maria, and Mary Viola leave their ability to always be together to Helen Chmielewski, Lola Kamaros and Katherine Porcello. 28. The sixth period Chem Class leaves all Miss Crombie's experiments to next year's college Chem Class in the hopes that they, also, can force the typing class to seek refuge out in the fresh air. 29. Rodney Lee bequeathes his blonde hair to Frank Korona. 30. Edward Jaworski's Einstein propensities are left to John Bridge who already has shown promise to be the discoverer of the square root of the sum of the two cubes. In witness thereof, we, the Class of 1948 set our hand and seal the 16th of June, one thousand nine hundred forty- eight. Witnesses: WILLIAM B. McCLAREN JOHN W. Beginning doubtfully and far away. First lets his fingers wander as they list. And builds a bridge from Dreamland for his lay; So wrote James Russell Lowell; and so I mused over our four happy years at Enfield! But history is fact, though it may represent the fulfillment of dreams—so will you go with me back to that day when we first entered the halls of Enfield, on September 11, 1944? We were not frightened little Freshmen, we were the' 'long sought treasure of Enfield; that is what we thought, until we met the upperclassmen. Then we knew that all that glitters is not gold. The first event of the year was the Senior-Freshman Recep- tion, where we were cordially welcomed into Enfield. The election of class officers came next on our program. Bill Egan was chosen as President; and his co-workers were Eddie Lynch, Vice-President; Statia Graczewski, Secretary; and Joanne Cormier, Treasurer. Our class artist, John Mangini, received honorable men- tion in the poster contest of the annual school play, Junior Miss, in which Alan Sheehan took part. An operetta entitled Rose of the Danube followed the play in events, with Irene Wlotkowski, Charlotte D'Arcy and Tommy Davidson partici- pating. The three months of our summer vacation dragged by, as we were dying to get back to our fall classes as Sophomores. In September the leaders of our class were Bill Egan, again President; Eddie Lynch, Vice-President; Helen Chesla and Tommy Davidson, Joint Secretaries; and Ernie Lagel, Trea- surer. The minstrel Happy Landing Revue was the highlight of our winter program. Our class supplied Irene Kaczynski as soloist, and Ernie Lagel as endman. Henry Zybura, Bill Purdy and Frank Aloisa provided the comedy. The play Spring Green was an event of the following season and our class actress, Marilyn Evans, gave forth a brilliant performance. As Jaunty Juniors we again elected officers for our class. For the third term Bill Egan was still our President; Ernie Lagel, Vice-President; Irene Bocwinski, Secretary; and Tommy Davidson, Treasurer. November 21, 1946, the play George Washington Slept Here took place, with the cast including two of our Juniors, Barbara Merrill and Frank Aloisa. During this year, two new Juniors, Marge Hathaway and Edward Jaworski, joined us. Both were warmly welcomed by all. The high spot of this year was our Junior Prom Floral Fiesta, with our lovely hostess, Jane Gordon, and charming host. Buzz Angelica, presiding. The latter part of April, the minstrel Spring Time Revue was produced, and such personalities as captivating Peggy Bruno and dynamic Helen Chesla were starred. Many also took part in the chorus. Skits were an enjoyable part of the show, with Frank Secondo, Leo Cammilleri, Vitol Mack, Eddie Lynch, Bill Egan, Herb Dobrozensky and Ray Shel- anskas doing a Spring Dance. Petite Mary Viola and dashing Tommy Davidson were the host and hostess of the farewell affair, Moonlight and Roses. At last, that long remembered day in September, 1947, arrived. We were Seniors. We could at last demand the respect of the underclassmen, even if we didn't get it. The Senior-Freshman Reception revealed talent in both the Freshman and Senior classes. Senior talent included Elizabeth Falkowski, who played accordion selections, Grace Barrila displayed skill on the piano, and Irene Kaczynski gave her rendition of a popular song. Comedy was provided by Frank Aloisa, Tito Fiore, John Mangini and Henry Zybura. A hula dance, which held the audience spellbound, was performed be such ravishing beauties as Vitol Mack, Alan Sheehan, Benny Gambino, and Stan Halgas. After lively campaigns, the class officers of our final year in Enfield were elected. Bill Hunt became our new President; Ernie Lagel, Vice-President; Joanne Cormier, Secretary, and Edward Jaworski, Treasurer. In November, along with our officers, graduation exercise committees were chosen. Plans were immediately started for the issuing of a new year book. November 22nd, the play A Date with Judy was pre- sented. Seniors having parts were Marilyn Evans, Barbara Merrill, John Tierney, Benny Gambino, Betty Emery and Helen Chesla. Ernest Lagel and Statia Graczewski were host and hostess at our Senior Prom, Winter Wonderland. Have you, noticed any crooked lampposts or broken hydrants lately? Do you know why the Town of Enfield is continually repairing things? This will no longer be necessary, for our class has set the precedent in taking part in the new Driver Education and Training Course. This course is being taught in an effort to make the young people of Connecticut competent drivers. Marjorie Hathaway was the choice of the class for the annual good citizenship prize of Penelope Terry Abbe Chap- ter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In February, Sophie Bonk, because of her high scholastic record, was awarded a full tuition scholarship of $300.00 at American International College. Then, after winning first prize in the local American Legion Contest, Sophie was awarded third prize in the Legion Oratorical contest in Hart- ford, Connecticut, on March 13. As Sophie was the third winner from Enfield in the Legion contests, a cup found final resting place in our school. Our congratulations went to Sophie for the honor she brought to our class. Throughout our Junior and Senior years, the Junior Town Meetings of the Air were being broadcast. Debaters included Barbara Merrill and Marge Hathaway. An assembly was held during March for the purpose of distributing sweaters to our class athletes. These symbols of honor were bestowed upon Buzz Angelica, Tommy David- son, Herb Dobrozensky, Frank Secondo, Eddie Lynch, Carm Nuccio, Ray Shelanskas, Bill Hunt, and our class athlete, Stan Halgas. Under the direction of our principal, Mr. Tatoian, the annual minstrel took place. Soloists were Peggy Bruno, Vir- ginia Gourlie, Frank Kamay, and endmen included Helen Chesla, Benny Gambino and John Mangini. Interlocutor was the Hi-Y President, Ernie Lagel. With a glorious Washington trip, and a most delightful Farewell Prom, our four years at Enfield came to an end. In closing, we express the wish of our school song: May our thoughts and our deeds be a token Of a love that cannot die. May we live as sons and daughters Of old Enfield High. 44 FOOTBALL TEAM BASKETBALL TEAM 46 GIRLS1 INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL 47 Joanne Cormier Valedictorian Barbara Merrill Salutatorian SENIOR HONOR STUDENTS 48 JUNIOR PROM Hl-Y MINSTREL SKIT Hl-Y MINSTREL '47 DELEGATE ASSEMBLY TICKER STAFF 50 JUNIOR CLASS SOPHOMORE CLASS FRESHMAN CLASS H I -Y CLUB ORCHESTRA 54 FRESHMAN GIRLS' Y LATIN CLUB 55 GIRL RESERVES GLEE CLUB 56 greeting cards!
