CHESS, THE GAME OF LIFE One who would draw a comparison between a table game employing carved pieces of wood and the so-called “game” of life will find, | believe, a useful instruction: CHESS IS THE MOST SCIENTIFIC OF ALL GAMES; IT DOES NOT DEPEND UPON LUCK OR GOOD FORTUNE BUT RATHER UPON ACUMEN, CLEAR THINKING AND THE ABILITY TO LOOK AHEAD TO SEE THE EFFECT OF PRESENT AND FUTURE PLAYS. Life consists of unpredictable challenges that are utterly real. But, like chess, each person during life faces situations calling for analysis, planning and careful execution. History contains records of many examples of man’s response to challenges. Chess has origins in dim antiquity, and man’s fondness for it comes from his attempt to reenact real problems by use of a chess board. We are confronted by difficult “moves” in daily life. Like the combatants intent upon their knights and pawns, you and |, the real-life counterparts, are called upon to face the challenge with all of our resources. An intelligent and successful response to the prob- lems of adult life requires the ‘player’ to possess a repository of ethical values, intellectual training of a high order, and great resolution. Dr. Donald M. Roderick Superintendent of Schools It would be pleasant, of course, to be assured of a victorious ““Checkmate!” each time. But the chal- lenges before us are not marshalled as logically and conveniently as those on a chess board. Life, then, is not a game. But it is still an exciting challenge awaiting your next move. DONALD M. RODERICK. Superintendent of Schools Board of Education ROW 1: Donald D. Lum, M.D., Mr. J. Lub- bock. ROW 2: Mr. A. H. Moffitt, Mrs. Lee H. Cavanaugh, Mr. C. D, Ramsden.
