Donald J. Bell Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE When the Encinal High School chess team plays a match with another school, the casual observer is apt to be surprised by the vocabulary of the average chess player—“check,”” “checkmate,” “stalemate,”’ “your move’ are but a few. Since the 1963 Horizon has chosen as its theme, “Chess, The Game of Life,’’ it might be appropriate to consider which term in the above vocabulary is most significant in the game of life. ‘“Your move’ has the greatest implication for the future of each student in our school. Mr. Bell consuits his schedule for the day’s activities. As each of you crosses the chessboard of life, striving for the fulfillment of our desires, ambi- tions, and ideals, it will be mandatory for you to make decisions as to the logical moves to win the game. Your school offers the climate for teaching you the necessary skills and provides the intellectual stimu- lus needed for you to make proper decisions and purposeful moves. If you move in the right direction, your goals are usually realized, If you make a wrong move, your progress is ‘‘checked’”’ and your goals may not be achieved. However, if you make no move at all, the world passes you by, and your life becomes a ‘’stale- mate.” Your teachers, counselors, advisors, and the admin- istrative staff are constantly urging you to move in the right direction, to accomplish y our goals. and to achieve to the best of your ability. It is up to you —don‘t wait for someone to say, ‘Your move.” | wish to thank each member of the 1963 Horizon staff for a job well done. It is through your team- work and diligent efforts that you are giving our student body the biggest and finest annual ever. To Miss Holland, editorial advisor; Mr. Kline, busi- ness advisor; Diana Redden, editor; and business staff co-editors Linda Fillipelli and Elorne Golden, | wish to convey my personal thanks and appreci- ation for an outstanding year book. DONALD J. BELL
