A teacher ajects eternityg he can never tell ufhm'1r his fllflllflllk' stops. 7 eHenry Adams ADMINIST RAT IO Guiding us in the expansion of our horizons of knowledge is the lincinal High School faculty and administration. They are the major force which influences us and inspires us to think for our- selves and to prepare for college or a vocation. Throughout his- tory, teachers have transmitted to their students not only knowl- edge and skills but also an awareness of their heritage, which is deepened and widened as the years pass. The teacher can instill the idea of individual worth in his students to give them at hasfs upon which to develop and expand their personal horizons.

r. lVlell Stresses Meaning and Direction Oliver YN'endell llolmes once said. The great thing in the world is not so mueh where we stand as in what direction we are moving. Since the theme of our 1959 Yearbook is Expanding Horizons. the words of Nlr. llolmes greet us with new significance as we see the once distant horizons of -cientilic experiments approach the reality of everyday achievement. Man's leap to the moon and beyond is near. But whether man lives on the earth. the moon. an artificial planet. or a space platform. he can no more live by science alone than by bread alone. Wlherever he dwells he will have to live with himself and with other people. Manls new horizons lie not only in the stratosphere but in the spirit. The seientitic age needs scientilic and technical personnel. to be sure: but above all it needs finer and better persons. This means becoming disciplined and responsible for ourselves as well :is in our relations with others. to keep growing and developing our real competence as persons through pursuit of moral and spiritual values. The future calls for men and women with a spirit of inquiry. It calls for young people who are learning the art of identifying. nurturing and wisely using their talents. It calls for achievement through individual ellorts toward worthwhile goals. t 5 Life must have substance. direction. meaning. and objectivity as indicated in the Rockefeller Report on Education: i'YVhat most people wantf--fyoung and old- fis not merely security. or comfort. or luxury. Most of all they want meaning in their lives. The seientilie age brings not only new problems for mankind but also a new urgency to get on with the unfinished business of finding both direction and meaning lor himself in his expanding Horizons. The high school experienees and education of our graduates will be a firm founda- tion upon which they may build meaning in their lives and give purposeful direction to their future living. Our love and best wishes go with you. I wish to extend my personal thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Ron Teilh and Valerie Lockhart. editors: Janet Seymour and Jeanne Stull. business managers: their stalls: and to Miss Marilyn Hey and Mr. Clarence Kline. editorial and business ad- visers. for their many hours of hard work and devoted efforts. They have delightfully captured the spirit of Encinal High School through prose and pictures of the myriad activities of our students. faculty. and staff in this time-capsule of the Horizon we reached in l959.
