ln The Beginning. . . 1863 An act to establish, locate and endow a state normal school was passed by the state legislature on March 3 1863 2 That there be and is hereby established and permanently located at the town of Emporia in Lyon County, a State Normal School, the exclusive purposes of which shall be the instruction of persons, both male and female, in the art of teaching, and in all the various branches that pertain to a good common school education, and in the mechanic arts, and in the arts of husbandry and agricultural chemistry, and in the fundamental laws of the United States, and in what regards the rights and duties of citizens . . . 1871 Lyman B. Kellogg resigned as president in 1871, leaving the Normal School with an enrollment of 243 students 1 as compared to KU's 213 and the Agriculture C0llege's 1681, a roster of graduates with comparatively good training received under his direction, and an up-and-coming reputation. 1878 On April 13, 1878, a tornado struck KSN and caused 8550 worth of damage, tearing off the roof of each of the two buildings.
