Dedicated To Mase Wfzo Sim!! Never Return Ry John P. Mcflormally They were here but briefly. They came shaking off the last wonderful innocence of adolescence, and before they had more than wet their lips in the heady wine of manhood they were gone. They were men then quickly. They embraced the good and evil of the world into which they were thrust -a world bestowed on them by the ignorance they had come here to conquer. They went out to all the little- known, strange-named places. They lived each monotonous hour, each madly racing day, and suddenly grew old. They fought unsurely and awkwardly because they were men of peace who knew books better than rifles. They saved a land, reenshrined an idea- and then they died. Now the world is drunk with peace. Men vie again for selfish pur- pose, nations wrangle, politicians argue and are called statesmen, busy people are oblivious and time reels through the freshly inked pages of hesitant history. And little bits of Emporia State lie around the world, waiting to be justified. But remembering alone is not justification. Those who left this school to lie in the lonely fields and on the quiet islands or to drift endlessly in the waves that wash the shores of all the earth could not have been much concerned with leaving us but a memory. Instead they left a land and a peace and a challenge. The chal- lenge is to live: to love the laughter, to bear the sorrow, to seek the full- ness and the answer to the everlasting searching that life is. To remember, yes, and to be saddened by the memory of good friends, lost and longed for, who are not coming home. To keep the past forever fresh. To drink the toasts and say the prayers and shed the tears of memory. But this dedication is not to the past, not to memory alone. This book shouts impatiently at the future when this youth is mellowed, this gaiety is the seriousness of America's men and women, this knowledge, planted in us here, is the wisdom of the world -- the good, one, worthwhile World which alone can explain about those who are not here. wi ,env gi., ,lik
