HG ai M ' X Ufzstory of the Senior Ggflgh The iirst high school to be built in Emporia 1 1 - C33 - :P ,3 o f ?f-0. u ' ' ' GNN'-fa 4-lr'-o was known as the old stone building situated on the northeast corner of the present Senior high school block. In 1880 a brick building was built in the center of the block and the old structure was turned over to the use of the grades. This building was known as the Garfield building. It was about sixty feet square, containing eight rooms and a large bell tower and bell. The building was re- modeled and enlarged about 1893. There were six teachers and the first graduating classes contained from ten to twelve people, most of Whom were girls. The Garfield building was replaced in 1914 by the present Senior high school, one of the finest in the state. When this building was built the bell that hung in the Garfield building was rescued by the alumni and students and made into the monu- ment that now stands southeast of the high school building. The material used in making the monu- ment was taken from the Garfield building. The Senior high school building is modern, and well equipped, having forty rooms, a gymnasium and an auditorium with a seating capacity of nine hundred. . The faculty of the high school now consists of thirty-two members. Three separate courses are offered: the College Preparatory, General, and Com- mercial. These cover a standard curriculum, and in addition the high school offers special training in public speaking, dramatics, art work, music ap- preciation, harmony, printing, household arts and manual training, and other special subjects. Classes are devoted to the band, orchestra and glee clubs. This year the building is occupied by three upper classes, since the ninth grade is included in the Junior high school. There are about seven hun- dred students enrolled in 'the Senior high, and the graduating classes of 1926 has one hundred sixty- six members. -
