I thought it was going to be another one of those grey drizzly days that seem too frequent here, but it was only the wind in the trees. It was a beautiful day, blue sky, sun, and clouds. 8 Faces in the crowd how many stories could you tell? Someone once said that there is a novel in each of our lives. How many twists and turns of the plot lay in yours or yours or yours? I ask the faces that pass me as we speak. Hi.” Hello. 9 At last I am in class. I take notes, but my mind wanders especially on a beautiful day like today. I remember football and falling leaves, trying to keep my balance on the hill in the snow, and people, riding bikes, playing tennis and just sitting around. And there is always the sound of the train, shaking the dorm and interrupting classes. 10 11 12 Those arc vague words I sometimes think. But why am I here? To find the meaning those words have in my life. And that meaning is the hope of the future. 17 This year the Sphinx is dedicated to a person that has gained from others and taught others. From a small town such as Damascus to an intercity school in New Jersey, she has learned and in turn passed her experiences on to others. Respected in the classroom as a first class professor and as a coach by all those who play under her, she passes on her vitality to all those around her. Since coming to Emory in 1964, she has enlarged and has improved the college in many sports areas. All the students join in this tribute, as the 1974 Sphinx dedicates this yearbook to Eleanor Hutton. Chilcote came to Emory and Henry with a background centering largely around the Methodist Church. The son of a Methodist minister, Dr. Chilcote pastored Methodist churches in Pennsylva- nia, Massachusetts, and Tennessee, after having received his B.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After enrolling at Boston University School of Theology, he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1943, and, in 1955, he was awarded an honorary degree. Doctor of Divinity, at the University of Chattanooga. His career has included serving as news editor of The Christian Advocate, as the managing editor of The New Life Magazine, and as a delegate to various Methodist Conferences. Dr. Chil- cote has travelled extensively in the Middle East, Canada, and the continental United States, and has authored several books, the most recent. Creation and Liberation, to be available this year. Dr. Chilcote now directs his attention to serving the Emory and Henry College com- munity, and in this new involvement, he notes with evident pride that ... at no time in its history has the College more eagerly fostered efforts to accord worthful- ncss to each person ...” 23 The Administration Samir IS. Lacking a consist- ent big” scorer and the real good big man the Wasps were beaten often and by large margins. Although having a losing sea- son the team did have its bright spots. Jim Hall came into his own as a college player and averaged in double figures. Bert Hor- rocks played the inside well and Coach Arnold Mcllingcr could always count on lots hustle and tough defense from Jay Hall and Mike Clark. Bert Horrocks will be the only starter lost to graduation and with some good young talent coming back, the team looks forward to a successful season in 1974-75. Baseball The baseball program at Emory and Henry is growing under the direction of Coach Arnold Mellinger. The team showed much improvement in all phases of the game in the spring of 1973. James Pharis and Phil McCall captained the team, and were both able leaders. Everett Neese led the team offensively and Charlie Chitwood proved to be the defensive standout. 1974 looks like a good year with the team losing only three seniors. With better defense, pitching, and more consistent offense, the team will go for a winning year. L-R Row I: J. Phari . D. Bradley, B. Blevins. D. Lane, E. Neese. R. Wheeler, G. Lowe. R. White. J. William 89 I suppose I should say something inspiring on the last page. Per- haps it should be poetic since the book began that way. However, all I feel right now is a great sense of relief and disbelief — we’ve actu- ally finished the book! Let me say that the opinions and attitudes expressed in this yearbook are entirely those of the staff. Somehow or the other the most important people who worked on this book never managed to get themselves together for a picture. Probably that’s because they were too busy at the other end of the camera. I’d like to thank Jeff Morgan, Frank Lewis, Charles Slate, and especially Hugh Vaughan, for putting up with our last minute requests and making this book possible; my thanks to Claude Dean for football shots and class pictures; my thanks also to Debbie Don- nell who kept assuring me that we icouldget the book done. May the sun shine at Emory! Carol Photo of Dr. Luker on page 31 by Ted Rosen Photo of Frances Farcnthold on page 198 by Carolyn Litowich 216 •
