In Memoriam Dr. R. L. Hillman, M. D. There was a long friendship between Doctor Rolfc Louis Hillman and Emory and Henry College — beginning with his student days, continuing during the period when he was a member of the faculty — and later, during his years as college physi- cian. And now Emory is aware of a great sense of loss. Dear “Li’l Doc! How many classes of students did you watch come and go? How many times did you doctor, cheer, and encourage your “Wasps” on to victory? And who could count the colds and sprained ankles you have treated — or the problems and worries to which you offered a sympathetic ear? You were a part of the traditions which surround and uphold this college. The last few years, despite severe illness, you continued your work — and the new stu- dents came to know and love you, too. You’ve done a good job here. So long “Li’l Doc” — Sec you in the morning. 125

In Memoriam Christian — teacher — scholar — gentleman. Dr. James Noah Hillman was all these. He was “Big Doc,” who served this college as president from 1922 until 1941. He left behind an admirable record of service to this school. His dedication to the highest goals served as a source of inspiration to all who knew him. His deep and sincere religious faith, to which he was a living witness . . . His devotion to the progress and achievements of education . .. His long and devoted service to the great Masonic fraternity, so long a part of his life ... The open door of his office — and his heart... We will not forget him. He was the great American success story, for he was the “hometown boy who made good.” And from his quiet dignity and humility we learn the true meaning of great- ness. 124
