And now we close the book — and the year. With gratitude we look back on what is finished. But we know it is never really over, for far in the future our memories will stir, and again we will walk these ways. It was such a laughing time. We will remember the parties, the lighthearted laughter, the athletics. But hidden away and care- fully saved will be the memory of a friend gained, a goal won, a moment of glory that made the day-by-day tasks endurable. This has been a year of advancement and achievement — both for the school and for the students. The school now includes new buildings, and the promise of future achievements. The students have made new achievements, and have the hope of success in the future. “MACTE VIRTUTE” — Go forward, increase in excellence 122

In Memoriam Christian — teacher — scholar — gentleman. Dr. James Noah Hillman was all these. He was “Big Doc,” who served this college as president from 1922 until 1941. He left behind an admirable record of service to this school. His dedication to the highest goals served as a source of inspiration to all who knew him. His deep and sincere religious faith, to which he was a living witness . . . His devotion to the progress and achievements of education . .. His long and devoted service to the great Masonic fraternity, so long a part of his life ... The open door of his office — and his heart... We will not forget him. He was the great American success story, for he was the “hometown boy who made good.” And from his quiet dignity and humility we learn the true meaning of great- ness. 124
