EMORY AND HENRY 7 APPLACHIAN STATE 0 Emory and Henry drove 54 yards in the opening canto for the only score of the game. Thereafter they only outplayed and outhustled the heavier Mountaineers. Harr)- Yost, Jim Raines, and Dewey O'Connor continued efforts for the Wasp’s first touchdown. Bob Rose added the extra point. Despite threats, the Mountaineers lost their last chance to score in the third quarter. They didn’t near the goal posts again. Bob Lenair’s tremendous punting kept the Mountaineers in the hole the entire contest. EMORY AND HENRY 13 WEST VIRGINIA TECH 6 Excellent teamwork payed off as the Wasps brought home a victory over favored West Virginia. Emory took advantage of a Tech fumble in the first quarter and con- verted it into a touchdown. End Levi Otcy fell on the Tech fumble on the West Virginia 38. A pass interference penalty placed the ball on the 12 and following three short plunges, Bill Halloway scored from the four. Dale Rose’s attempt for the extra point was unsuccessful. Tech’s halfback scampered 41 yards to the Emory Six in the feature run of what turned out to be Tech’s only score. Emory threatened twice more be- fore the half ended but was unable to score on the slippery turf. During the third period, Tech moved the ball to Emory’s 23 but they held by the line on downs. Hal McHarris recovered a Tech fumble on the Tech 48 with only ten minutes left in the game. Jimmy Raines ran the integral touchdown. Rose’s attempt for the extra point was successful. EMORY AND HENRY 6 WESTERN CAROLINA 0 Emory ended the season by de- feating the West Carolina Cata- mounts, 6—0. Jimmy Crews raced through the mud for 20 yards and a Wasp touch- down late in the third quarter. The try for the extra point failed but was not needed as the Wasps had scored the only touchdown of the game. The Wasps threatened twice more in the third quarter and once in the fourth. Two attempted field goals by Dave Looney failed and a Wasp pass was intercepted in the end zone to halt the other rally. Bob Lenair continued his out- standing punting for the Wasps by averaging 37.16 yards on nine kicks.

EMORY AND HENRY 28 — CARSON NEWMAN 14 With the tremendous all around play of quarterback Rex Raines and the line smashing of Bill Holloway the Wasps rolled over the Carson-Newman Eagles 28—14. Two Emory fumbles set up both Eagle touchdowns. After the opening touchdown, Emory moved the ball 80 yards in just eleven plays for the score. Early in the second quarter O’Conner carried the pigskin to the Eagle 29. After 3 plays the ball was on the 15 yard marker. Raines again faking to Holloway, slanted ofT tackle and barreled his way into pay dirt territor)- to score the second touchdown. Emory then led the game until the gun sounded. EMORY AND HENRY 42 — MARYVILLE 0 Quarterback Red Raines opened this slaughter with several bids to break the contest wide open here and there. After overcoming obstacles, Raines sprinted 63 yards for a touch- down. Emory rallied again and set the half-time score at 22-0. O’Conner starred in the third quarter when he grabbed a Highland punt and went 35 yards. Raines then passed to O’Conner who completed the touchdown. Smith, Lenoir, and Jonas also played extraordinary games. EMORY AND HENRY 26 — HAMPTON SIDNEY 22 A strong Emory team led by “Red” Raines, Bill Hallo- way, Kenny Smith and Dewey O’Connor made a runaway in the first half of the Wasp and Tiger ballgamc by scoring 20 points. The second half in the early part of the third quarter made the score 26—0. In the latter part of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter the Wasp had to stave off an up-hill attack by the Tigers to win the ballgamc at Petersburg. The Hampton Sidney Tigers scored 22 points in the final half of the ballgamc to remain a constant threat to the Emory victory. 106
