AP-S 1U6 Photograph of an oil painting ieutenant Dwight C. Shepler,U.S.N.R. by gfficial U.S.Navy Combat Artist THE+BATTLE FOR+FOX GREEN BEACH--NORMANDX. JUNE Q, 194u. NE FOUGHT ALL DAY FOR THIS STRETCH OF OMAHA BEACHHEAD. IT'S BENIGN GREEN BLUFFS AND VALLEY ENTRANCE WERE A NAZE OF CROSS FIRE FROM INFILADED 86's, MORTARS AND MACHINE GUNS WHICH RAKED THE BEACHES AND PINNED THE INFANTRY TO THE SHINGLE BEFORE THE FIENDISH MINEFIELDS. By mid-afternoon landing craft were clogging W the few gaps in the beach obstac1es,while under a rain of short and long-range artillery fire, support waves circled and jockeyed for an opening. Destroyers moved far into the shallow water to pump salvos of 5 inch shells into stubborn emplacements and mobile targets of opportunity. I The house in the valley and the spire of Colleville-sur-Mer on the hill were landmarks of Fox Green Beach. The spire was used as an artillery control tower by the Germans. It's lovely renaissance architecture crumbled into sad rubble when a shore- fire-control party called on the destroyer EMMONS to demolish it. The artist was serving as an identification officer aboard that ship. This is the beach which Hemingway describes in his article nVOYAGE to VICTORY.n E A ANOTHER EMMONS MISSION Q WELL DONE A CONGRATULATIONS y Captain and Mrs. Harold M.
