SAB Devises Behavior Code for Manuatites Secretary Patty Koopman and President Perry Cobb present a PA announcement covering one of the aspects of the Code of Conduct. This was one of a series of skits. Manual ' s Student Affairs Board this year reacti- vated the system of having a Student Assembly, representatives and alternates chosen from each Home Room to relay back SAB business. The Student Affairs Board ' s After-Game Dances provided fun for students following basketball games. A roster board, indicating names of basketball players and their fouls, was presented to the school for the gym by the SAB. Manual has two represen tatives in Intra-city Stu- dent Council, which sponsored the annual Sports- manship Contest for the Sectional. This organization arranged exchange speakers for the pre-Sectional pep rallies. Chuck Todd represented Manual. In an effort to make everyone associated with Manual more conscious of proper behavior, the Stu- dent Affairs Board introduced a code of conduct to the school. The idea grew out of suggestions from the faculty ' s annual Bradford Woods Workshop in November. To impress this code, a series of humor- ous PA announcements and skits, written by SAB members, were presented during Home Room to dramatize the importance of our adopting it. SAB has paid expenses for Junior Bill Glass to attend the Student Council Workshop this summer at Indiana University, in the hope that he will bring back many new and different ideas. STUDENT AFFAIRS BOARD — SEATED: Mr. John Patten, sponsor; Darlene Fletcher, Mike McCuire, Perry Cobb, Patty Koopman, Diane Eickhoff, Mr. Robert Doyle. STANDING: Jeanine Kent, Hank Hays, Bill Class, Mike Alte, Ron Christy, Danny Cook, Karlis Steinmanis, John Berry, Mrs. Marilyn Dever. 29

National Honor Society Cites Top Scholars New members of the National Honor Society were announced by President Paul Stroud in a junior-senior auditorium. Verse introduced each new 1 member, su mming up his achievements. Scholarship, leadership, service, and character are the traits of a National Honor Society member. This year, twenty-two seniors and fourteen juniors were inducted into Manual ' s chapter on April 25, increasing the membership to fifty-four. The National Honor Society was founded in 1 2 1 in Pennsylvania, but Manual ' s chapter was not esta- blished until 1956. NHS strives to create an enthusiasm for scholar- ship throughout a school. Its national scope gives the Honor Society a high significance and an un- usual prestige. The national organization admin- isters a scholarship fund which has provided scholar- ships, awards, and certificates of merit to outstand- ing students going to college. It feels that one of the hopes for better high schools in the future rests on the members of the National Honor Society. All juniors elected must have a grade average of 6.75 and seniors must have a 6.25 average. The membership cannot exceed 3 percent of the junior class or 10 percent of the senior class. Qualified stu- dents are chosen by vote of the faculty. Although some chapters of the National Honor Society are service organizations, Manual ' s chapter is strictly an Honorary and has no activities. The organization ' s insignia is a gold keystone. Extroverts among Us Take to Stage, Air Jim Koenig as Mr. McKcevcr vigorously pedals an exercising vehicle in his office in Solid Cold Cadillac. Entertainment apprentices learn fundamentals of acting, announcing, make-up, stage production, costuming, lighting, and engineering in National Thespians, Mask and Wig, Radio Club, and Stage Crew. Acting, announcing and record chatting, and setting stages all form a new learning experience. National Thespians, honorary organization in dramatics, presented Agatha Christie ' s mystery, The Unexpected Guest. As an added attraction, the actor who portrayed the victim was kept secret from the cast and audience until the actual performance when Mr. Ed Wall, head of the Science Department, took his place on stage as the victim. Combining with Mask and Wig, the Thespians took part in a comedy, Solid Gold Cadillac. Mask and Wig also presented a one-act play, The Val- iant, a drama depicting the last moments in a mysterious prisoner ' s life. Mr. Fred Bennett spon- sors Thespians, and Miss Athena Chochos, Mask and Wig. Mr. Carl Wright directs the Stage Crew and Stage Craft classes in setting up production of the many stage settings required during a school year. Radio Station WMHS broadcasts event reminders and a variety of music every school morning before classes begin over the intercom system. Several of the engineers have FCC Third Class Radio-Tele- phone licenses with broadcast endorsement. Sponsor of Radio Club is Mr. Malcolm Stern.
