Classroom Activities Make Us Sensitive To Need for Education The elation of receiving an A on a research paper or the frustration of being burdened with a very difficult homework assignment are among the many varieties of moods which Manualites experi- ence. The English Department contributes to the liter- ary and grammatical development of the students. The works of great writers of the past, as well as contemporaries, enrich the minds of pupils from freshmen to seniors. Manual offers French, Latin, and Spanish to those interested in foreign languages and cultures. The collection of tape recordings by native Frenchmen and Spaniards are helpful aids in practicing everyday conversation. Learning the many properties of the elements, studying the functions of animal and plant organ- isms, and examining the earth ' s crust were among the many activities of science classes this year. The Math Department buzzed with activity as pupils pursued courses from general math to calculus. The Home Economics Department gave girls ex- amples of the future in such classes as Home Man- agement, cookino, and Home Nursing. Not to be forgotten is the Boys ' Foods class, which gave Man- ual ' s chefs an opportunity to display their culinary skills. Industrial Arts offered students vocational train- ing in auto, metal, wood, and printing shops. Seniors Margaret Coebel and Loretta Magill hurriedly cram for a test before entering their classroom. Government and Economics students marked their ballots for the candidates of their choice as election year brought mock elections to Manual. On warm spring and fall days, art classes take their drawing boards and stools to the campus to sketch. Art Production designed senior arm bands, Redskin Revue programs, and posters for numerous occasions. Music classes were a welcome change to school book routines for the music-minded. Theory classes studied the principles of different types of music. The Business Department offered various office training courses for future businessmen and women. To understand each other and the world is our high goal of education. Curriculum and activities blend to set the moods for our daily lives. The library provides a convenient, pleasant place for study and research, attracting Manualites throughout the day. Teachers as well as students find it well equipped with reading and reference materials for special assignments.

Speech classes provide numerous situations for practicing oral speech and interpretation. Among these are panel discussions through which pre- pared and extemporaneous materials are presented. Jerry Shands, Diane Eickhoff, Diane Dandrea, John Berry, and Linda Bair form a panel to discuss safe driving. English, Languages Focus on Self -Expression Modern languages are taught from a conversational standpoint. The ad- vanced classes are conducted almost entirely in the foreign tongue. In this picture, Mr. Millard Arnold, Head of the Language Department, chats about the weather with a class. The language lab gives French and Spanish students the opportunity to listen to taped foreign conversations and also to hear themselves speak the languages. Here, Miss Mary Anne Kondrath helps a class with some difficult pronunciation.
