Language Arts Lead All Esther Sobel hacks at Randy Strait ' s pinata at a party for all French, Spanish, and Latin classes. Below, Ralph Tacoma and Doug Booth act a scene from a Moliere play in French class. Throughout the years since its founding in 1895, Manual has educated the whole individual— molding each student ' s growth and development both in and out of the classroom. Altering its program to coin- cide with the changing and expanding needs of a swelling student population, Manual ' s format chang- ed from a trade to a comprehensive high school, which prepares students for college as well as for the business and industrial worlds. An enrollment in- crease of some 700 students in the last ten years necessitated additions to our physical plant and an extended school day— from eight to ten periods. Each of the eleven departments contributes in its special area to the training of the student. The English Department started this year with all-new text books. Oedipus Rex and Hamlet invaded the seniors ' world through a ten-week series of English films entitled The Humanities. For students inter- ested in foreign language, Manual offers French, Spanish, and Latin. Highlighting this year for ad- vanced French was a series of recordings exchanged with a French schoolboy who was studying English. Christmas found Spanish students making pinatas, which were sent to the Children ' s Gu ardian Home. From factoring to graphing the functions of trigonometric angles, mathematics continues to be an all-important subject. This year saw math and science split into separate departments because of increased activity in each. Earth Science, based on the study of the earth ' s crust, made its debut. Several Government classes participated in a mock Congress— each student portraying a real Con- gressman. The session was climaxed by each stu- dent ' s actually exchanging letters with his Con- gressman. For those interested in the finer points of life, the Fine Arts Departments opened their doors. Among the projects for Art Production class were the designing of the Senior Class armbands and the Redskin Revue program cover. The Music Depart- ment ' s high point of this year was its almost-profes- sional production of the musical Oklahoma. In the Business Department pupils in advanced typing and office training Avere exposed to a short course in data processing. Instruction came from outside speakers, supplemented by pamphlets. Home Economics benefited from new equip- ment, gift of the Red Cross in memory of Mr. George S. Olive, an 1899 grad. In Industrial Arts, Auto Shop, now twice as large as it was because of building ad- ditions, is complemented by a new Print Shop. Outside the classroom Manual tries to guide the social growth of each student. Whether it ' s sports, clubs, school service, or any other of Manual ' s num- erous co-curricular activities, all are incorporated as a part of our training. For outside the four walls commonly referred to as the classroom, learning continues that helps ease our growing pains.

To Keep Pace with Space-age Events With transparent solids, Mr. Harold Beasley clears up a point in Solid Geometry for Dick Coss, Jan McDaniel, Gary Eby, and Sue Huppert. Measuring the horsepower of a person by timing Jack Palladay ' s speed as he runs up stairs is Mr. Wayne Dunbar ' s physics class. The actual computing is done by formula. Larry Mills, Lonnie Robertson, and Rita Carson find that after-school hours provide valuable time for Chemistry lab experiments. Here they heat potassium chlorate to produce potassium chloride and oxygen.
