Tftaatcai 0$ ua Although reading, writing, and arithmetic fill seven hours of our school day, we Manualites squeeze in extra activities which not only stimulate our interest in classwork and allow us to show what we can do to parents and friends, but also provide us with just plain fun and a chance to meet new friends. During this year our borders of international interest in this shrinking world were greatly ex- tended. Our first American Field Service Foreign Exchange Student since 1958, Jeanette Klein, arrived in September from Johannesburg, South Africa. Living with Senior Terri Stoneburner and her family, Jan not only gained herself an im- pressive spot atop the Honor Roll, but also learned the intricacies of Pep Club cheers, and caught our TV bug. Vesla Kallhovd, a native of Eger- sund, Norway, spent the spring semester in the home of Senior Judy and Freshman Ron McBride, as an exchange student in the In- ternational Christian Youth Ex- change program. Vesla was a victim of Hoosier Hysteria less than a month after her arrival. Senior Lynne Simmerman join- ed the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Language, studying in the French fishing town of St. Brieuc, during sum- mer, 1962. Manual ' s Homecoming celebra- tion in September presented King Manual X, Phil Steele, and Queen Terri Stoneburner, who were crowned during a half-time show. In the midst of a nation-wide re-evaluation of the high school ROTC program, Manual ' s Battle Group of some 260 cadets contin- ued to serve the school, acting as messengers, ushers, doormen, and guards at school functions. The unit participated in the downtown Veterans Day and Armed Forces Day parades. Reward for their work came last spring, when Man- ual was again cited with an hon- or rating at Federal Inspection. On Turn-about Day we turned the tables on the teachers and took over for them and our ad- ministrators. Opportunity Day gave Manualites a chance to look into a crystal ball at their futures. Dances throughout the year transformed the Cafeteria from a noisy lunchroom to an inviting dance floor. Masoma and Roines combined for the fall Pigskin Prom, followed by the Ivian ' s Pic Parade. The Student Affairs Board sponsored after-basketball-g a m e dances where the twist and con- tinental were the vogue. The Choir ' s Snow Whirl provided a Christmas formal, and the Glee Club sponsored the annual turn- about Cherry Tree Hop. ROTC cadets and band members attended the Military Ball in March. In March the curtain goes up on the two-night Redskin Revue. This year ' s production, March 29-30, spanned the globe with Chinamen, Egyptians, Indians, and Tarzan. Parents join our fun, too. The P-TA ' s annual Pow Wow in May featured dinner, club-sponsored booths, a vaudeville show, and rec- ord hop. The annual Projects Fair is set up in the gym in June. Best work developed in all departments is exhibited, a fitting climax to the school year.
