Honor Society Cites Top Pupils; SAB Serves All NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY officers, Tom VanArsdale, president; Jan Stephenson, secretary; Sherry Braun, treasurer; and Dick VanArsdale, vice-president, help Mr. Ed Wall, sponsor, prepare the large torch for initiation, which was April 23 in the auditorium. Thirty-seven new members were initiated into the Manual chapter of the National Honor Society, Sunday afternoon, April 23. Parents and friends of the fourteen juniors and twenty-three seniors attended the ceremonies in the Manual auditorium. Membership in the organization is determined by faculty vote based first on scholarship, and then on leader- ship, character and service. The first Manual Student Affairs Board was originated in January, 1948, by Mr. E. H. Kemper McComb, then Manual principal. Since that time the Board has sponsored pro- jects which provide entertainment for students and aid for the school. Members are chosen by student vote. Representatives from every Home Room assist the Board, which monitors all-school elections. Dances after basketball games are sponsored by the Board. A scholar- ship fund in memory of Don Kleppe, who died in September as a result of a football injury, was also set up this year. Mr. John Patten, Dean of boys, is faculty sponsor. The faculty is represented on the Board by Mr. John Ed- wards and Mr. Ray Hawkins. Booster Headlines Activites as They Happen CUB CLUB — Seated right to left: Martha Melton, Janet Bowers, Lynn Simmerman, Marlene Stachow, Miss Nancy Sharp, sponsor; Dan Nicoson, Dianne Lindley, Laveana Carpenter, and Ronnie Drahos. The Publications office houses the Booster staff, the Ivian staff, and the News Bureau. Members of the news bureau, who are also on the Booster staff, send releases to the three Indianapolis newspapers and neighborhood papers. Keeping Manualites informed is the job of Manual ' s busy newspaper staff. Inter- viewing newsmakers, setting up pages, and especially meeting deadlines, are all jobs which Booster staffers know well. Following our basketball team has been a difficult job for Booster sportswriters. Copy must be ready by Friday and because of the weekend games, flexible plans had to be made. Our obliging Champs made it unnecessary to rewrite pre- game written headlines. For the second year the Booster received the Freedoms Foundation Award — the George Washington Honor Medal — for editorials. The money accom- panying it was also welcomed by the staff. BOOSTER — SEATED: Jayne Perkon, Sara Broz, Dianna Brier, Deanna Borgman, Pat Tolan, Karen Smith, Paula Williams, Mary Neesen, Michele Perkinson, Dorothy Porter, editor-in-chief, Chuck Creasey.
