The Fins Arts display at the Student Project Fair show- ed work from all levels of art done in various media- pencil, charcoal, watercolor. Annual Projects Fair Stimulates Initiative All departments at Manual exhibit student work at the annual Student Projects Fair in one big show in the gym at the close of second semester. The English Department exhibit in- cludes such things as essays, poems, and themes; and Art Department shows crafts and paintings; and Home Economics displays the handiwork of student seamstresses and cooks. Industrial Arts displays metal and wood work. Entries are judged and ribbons are awarded for first, second, and third places. The Fair is open to students who visit the exhibits with classes during school. A P-TA meeting at Fair time makes it possible for parents to visit displays. The Projects Fair stimulates stu- dents to do their best work and to share it with others. At the same time, this activity provides competition among Manualites. Jerry Steadham inspects a science display at the Project Fair. Ted Snider examines a miniature house; Claudia Dailey, a weather vane. Both were contributed by the Metal Shop. Many outsiders visited the Fair. 15

Our Art Students Practice Fine Arts, Crafts Students who like art find many modes of self-expression in Manual ' s Art Department. Beginning art courses offer fundamentals in the various media of art. Advanced courses allow students to work with techniques in which they are interested. In craft courses, pupils work in leather, plastics, textiles, clay, and paper. In jewelry classes, wire, copper, brass, aluminum, and silver are used for mak- ing cuff links, bracelets, earrings, and other articles. The Art Production class does school service projects; the senior banner and senior arm bands, designed by Dick Listenberger, are made by this class. This class made posters for the Music Department ' s Kiss Me Kate. Red- skin Revue posters, designed by Dick Listen- berger, and programs, designed by Terry Steadham, were other contributions. Silk screening senior arm bands are Bill Borden, Carol Bidgood, and Dick Listenberger, designer. David Bird, the old lamp lighter, poses as members of an advanced art class get practice in sketching. 14

At the Armed Forces Day Parade, Keith Davis, Jerry Fox, John Aldrich, and Dennis Drinkwine, stand at ease. Everyone loves parades; and when our ROTC Battle Croup participates, many Manualites are on the sidelines. Such an occasion was last November 1 1 at the Veterans Day Parade. Besides being in parades, members serve the school regularly as messengers, ushers, door- men, and guards for activities like home bas- ketball games, Redskin Revue, Open House, and other school-sponsored functions. On Thursday and Friday, the cadets dress in full uniform. On Friday, they stand inspection with one of the six honorary cadets officiating. The honorary cadets are girls chosen by the ROTC from Senior candidates. Many cadets partici- pate in the activities of the Rifle Team, Drill Team, and ROTC History Club. At the ROTC ' s annual Military Ball, a Queen of the Ball is chosen from the six sponsors and eight girls from the school at large. ROTC Disciplines Cadets in Deportment, Service On Turn-About Day during National Education Week, students took the places of many teachers. Here, Jerry West, acting as ROTC Commandant Sergeant O. J. Nunnery, instructs a class in the care and use of a rifle. Jerry was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel second semester and served as cadet commander the rest of the year. 16
