All Major in English; Some Master Other Languages Steve Brownlee listens intently to a French lesson. The twenty-five teachers in Manual ' s English Department promote creativity in English through contests — such as short story, poetry, and essay. On the Academic or Fine- and Practical-Arts Diploma, eight semesters of English are required while the other plans require six semesters. New this year is a Dramatics class. In the spring, on English Honors Day, students who have excelled in English and languages are recognized and awarded prizes for their contributions. Man- ual was represented in outside competition such as the Indiana University Regional Eng- lish Exam. Sara Broz, senior, was a national winner in the competition sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English; Paula Williams, senior, received honorable mention. In the Language Laboratory, students are able to hear themselves recite in the modern lang- uages — French and Spanish, by the use of speakers and tape recording equipment. One of the projects of the French classes was the publication of a bi-weekly newspaper, La Souterrain. The p aper provided French stu- dents a chance to apply the language. Melony Doty, Nancy Wolford, Kathy Burks, )udy Bernhardt, and Janet Lowe from Mrs. Stewart ' s English IV class portray characters from the novel, Silas Marner. They presented a skit for several other English classes. 10

Social Studies, Science Join Airborne Experiment A pilot mans the controls on a DC6AB aircraft that is used to beam instructional telecasts to some 1 3,000 Midwest schools of which Manual is one. Manualites gain a knowledge of the past and present in our Social Studies Department. Courses are offered in world history, United States history, government, economics, psy- chology, international relations, and world geography. The Lilly Endowment Scholarship is awarded to a major for a paper about Social Studies, and The Human Liberties Awards are given to five students who make the best score on an examination in the spring. College prep students acquire a good founda- tion through our Math and Science Depart- ment. Math courses range from general math to analytical geometry. Algebra l-IV and solid and plain geometry are also included. Manual- ites may take freshman science, physical science, biology, chemistry, or physics. Man- ual Scientists Tom Fink, Martha Coode, and Linda Wotring were cited in the Indiana Science Talent Search. Tom was a winner. Mr. John Krueger ' s U. S. History II class listens to and watches a lesson during the experiment this semester.

Future Homemakers Learn to Cook, Sew It takes a heap of work and skill to make a house a good home. Home Economics classes at Manual teach homemaking skills such as cooking, sewing, and living graciously such as foods classes, girls learn to plan, prepare, and serve nutritious and tasty meals. In social practice classes, students learn to plan teas and parties, set tables correctly, and practice good grooming. Practical experience is avail- able when the students prepare for and serve at the activities of the Home Economics De- partment; for example, students served lunch- eon to Indianapolis principals when Principal Stahl was host for a meeting of administra- tors. Also, members of boys ' foods classes, wearing chef hats, served luncheon to the speakers for Opportunity Day. In sewing classes, girls select various garments to make. As a school service project, the sewing classes made Pep Club mittens. Advanced sewing classes learned tailoring. Members of Mrs. Jean Bacus ' sewing class learn to adjust patterns. Bottom: Home Ec labs are equipped with the latest modern appliances. Vaida Mikits and Mary Turner fold clean towels from a lab dryer. Members of Boys ' Foods class — Dick Cummings, Merrix Wilson, Bob Price, Jerry Cummins, Larry Walker, and George Tolan — receive instructions from Mrs. Thelma Morgan, their teache. , before serving lunch. 11
