TV Classes Reflect Modern Trends in Education A master teacher makes a point with a pistol for a history lesson in one of the TV studios preparing les- sons for airborne television. Classroom instruction via TV came to Manual the second semester. We were the only In- dianapolis high school to take part in the Mid- west Experimental Program with Airborne Television instruction. Classes, telecast by means of a video tape from an airplane flying at a high altitude over north-central Indiana, were in biology, United States history, govern- ment, and world history. With a television screen, each pupil has a front seat. In biology, for instance, a teacher telling of a frog can show it to everyone. In the ordinary class- room, perhaps only those in the front seats can see all he is pointing out, said Dr. Her- man L. Shibler, education services director of the Midwest program. Our class schedule had to be rearranged to fit the telecasts, which were 30 minutes long, Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the period was used for tests, reviews, or lectures, or however the teacher wished. Map shows the area covered by the Midwest Program on Airborne Televis- ion Instruction based at Purdue Uni- versity and serving six states. Social Studies, Science Join Airborne Experiment A pilot mans the controls on a DC6AB aircraft that is used to beam instructional telecasts to some 1 3,000 Midwest schools of which Manual is one. Manualites gain a knowledge of the past and present in our Social Studies Department. Courses are offered in world history, United States history, government, economics, psy- chology, international relations, and world geography. The Lilly Endowment Scholarship is awarded to a major for a paper about Social Studies, and The Human Liberties Awards are given to five students who make the best score on an examination in the spring. College prep students acquire a good founda- tion through our Math and Science Depart- ment. Math courses range from general math to analytical geometry. Algebra l-IV and solid and plain geometry are also included. Manual- ites may take freshman science, physical science, biology, chemistry, or physics. Man- ual Scientists Tom Fink, Martha Coode, and Linda Wotring were cited in the Indiana Science Talent Search. Tom was a winner. Mr. John Krueger ' s U. S. History II class listens to and watches a lesson during the experiment this semester.
