Attendants Louise Holle, Karen McDonnell, Sharon Lahrman, and Phyllis Brehob, and Papoose Christine Schofield smile congratulations to new Queen Sonja Keating. Homecoming Spectacular Welcomes Grads One of the largest and most enthusiastic crowds ever was on hand at Delavan Smith Field for the annual Homecoming game, October 3. This crowd also witnessed exciting performances by each team. During the gala half-time ceremonies, the candi- dates were escorted around the field in colorfully decorated convertibles. Ron Miller and Sonja Keat- ing were announced King and Queen Manual VI by Principal C. Edgar Stahl and crowned by last year ' s royalty, Paul Frodge and Betty Shaner. This year the crown bearers were Christine Schofield and Jim Hamner, attired in Redskin costumes. An Alumni Band was a new attraction along with the usual snappy routines by our own band. Papoose Jim Hamner and Candidates Norman Weddle, Bill Hair, Dave Bichards, Max Moneyhan, and Bon Miller anxiously wait as Principal Stahl announces the new King. Wreathed in smiles, Homecoming King and Queen, Bon Miller and Sonja Keating, wave enthusiastically to the crowd, as they circle the field in a blue convertible.

J, 4 School Hours Fill with Activities When 3:15 comes and classes are over, many of us find the most interesting part of the day just begin- ning. Conference period means club meetings, re- hearsals, and intramural sports. Teachers are avail- able to give extra help and counsel. Music rings from the south wing, and athletic teams practice in the gym or on field. Clicking typewriters in The Booster office mean busy staffers are getting another issue to press. This is the time of day that rounds out our programs. Visiting senior Jerry McClain is shown The Booster lay- out by Editor-in-Chief June Kistler and staff members Georgann Coldren, Carolyn Ibaugh, Jim Schulz, Carol Hoeping, and Sara Broz. Mr. Ben Parke, math instructor, smiles his approval as Bichard Bea explains a solid geometry problem to Charles Mercer, Karen Duke, and Oma Birl during the 10th-hour conference period. Mrs. Gertrude Hopper, Social Service, serves punch at a guest-meeting tea in the Alumni Boom after school. Mem- bers of the FTA, Muriel Huckaby, Sandra Bredy, and Gail Bay, assist. 15

Fifth Kiwanis Trophy Proves Band ' Tops ' Manual ' s Marching Redskins did it again! For the fifth consecutive year, the Redskin Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. William D. Kleyla, won the Kiwanis Best Band award for the most out- standing marching band in Indianapolis. The trophy was presented at the Downtown Kiwanis Club ' s fifth annual city high school football awards ban- quet. Each year the Kiwanis Club awards a trophy to a city high school band for having presented the best half-time shows at its football games. Manual ' s band has won the award every year since Kiwanis started presenting it. Judges consider discipline, on the field and in the stands, playing — tone, pitch, school song; marching, special maneuvers, enter- tainment value, general appearance, and original- ity in making their decision. Careful! That ' s my tail you ' re sewing, cautions Steve Matthews, as Sharon Lahrman finishes his costume for the Manual-Shortridge football game. Decked out in crimson and blue uniforms, Manual ' s Marching Band, directed by Mr. William Kleyla, form a block M as they perfect a marching routine. 17
