However, as the year progresses, sophomores gradu- ally find their places, make new friends, and adjust to the hustle and bustle of everyday life at Emmaus. After surviving their trial year at Emmaus High School, these more experienced sophomores may now look ahead to their coming years at Emmaus High School. 42 CLASS OF ’80 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Sandra Duerst (Vice President), Miss Therese Lamb (Advisor), Donna Bauman (Secretary), Nick Kavounas (President), Julie Winter (Treasurer). Along with the physical changes evident among junior class members, there are also changes in atti- tudes toward responsibility and preparation for the future. Antic- ipation for their coming senior year motivates the junior class to sponsor social gatherings and active fund raising activities. Meanwhile, most juniors wish for their remaining days as under- classmen to pass swiftly. 52 CLASS OF 79 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS, Top Row: Mr. Donald Lutick, Mr. John Hnatow (Advisers). Besides the natural ability of seniors Paul McLaughlin, Paul Zimmerman, and Dave McTish, the Hornets owe their success to long, hard practices running three times a day and over a hundred miles a week. This year an added girls' team was able to compete in a few of the meets against those schools which also had a girls’ team. They not only captured the Girls' Championship but placed thirteenth in the state. Kathy Carl, Margie Wieder, Debbie Christman, and Kim Gibbs kept the Hornets at the top again. Although their record this year cannot compare to those of previous years, they were threatening in every game. Of course, with a new coach, things went about as well as expected, and there is promise for the future. Perhaps the reason for Emmaus Hockey's consist- ent success is the close bond which forms between all the players. LOTS OF BUZZ Injuries prevented starters Bruce Polster and Mike Caverly from playing against the toughest competition dur- ing the season. When Polster and Cav- erly had the opportunity to play together, the Hornets’ ground game came alive. In the air, the combination of Caverly and Hamscher was lethal, but they also had little opportunity to play together. Defense was solid, but it could not compensate for the youth and inexperience of the offense which replaced Coach Legath’s original starting team. The team buzzed, how- ever — they always had the will to win. Emmaus, however, has been known for its golfers for the past several years and Lisa Schultz and John Was- ser carried on the tradition. Lisa Schultz, who anticipated a district win and a possible state championship, was a little disappointed when she placed third but she undoubtedly maintained a high level of play, plac- ing 10 in the state. Likewise, Wasser placed well in districts and qualified for states. OPPONENT Easton W Beth Oath W Allen L Liberty L Northampton W Phillipsburg W Central Oath w Dieruff w Freedom w Parkland w 79 PRIDE AND PROWESS 80 Debbie Christman and the Girls’ Basketball Team were a highlight of the 1978 school year. Christman broke the state scoring record of over 2000 points while the team won the league and district championships and placed third in Easterns. All through the season the team and the crowd anticipated Christman’s scoring of her 2000 points, and when she accomplished her feat, play was stopped and she was awarded the game ball. During the state tournament. Sue Carraher played her best, dominating the boards and scoring a large num- ber of the points. When the loss came in the semifinals, there was of course disappointment but the loss will be avenged next year. Too many close games were lost this year and nor- mally a team would lose its motivation but not the Hornets. Bob Kachalries continued his super hustle while Rich Wagner muscled the boards. Mean- while Mike Gee showed a few dunks and gave many players an early meal. THEY SAY IT'S GETTING BETTER So we had a losing season and per- haps a little embarrassment, but the time comes for every team when they just don’t have the kind of team they would like to have. The object of high school sports is to learn sportsman- ship and have fun, and undoubtedly the wrestlers did just that. Senior Kieth Peifly consistently shot in the high 90’s. To the surprise of many, the team has a lot of talent, but, because they are tucked away behind the English wing, very few people even know of the team. Their overall record was 6 wins and 10 losses with Keith Peifley having an average score of 99.7. CANARIES DUNKED The Allen Canaries discovered that hard practice and determination pays off — at least for Emmaus. After two early losses to Freedom and Liberty, the Hornets focused on their encoun- ter with their archrivals, the Allen Canaries. They practiced only for this meet and it payed off. Allen learned that Canaries can’t swim (as well as Hornets). However, members of the team felt a little short changed this year when, after winning the league title, they couldn’t maintain their momentum to capture districts. VOLLEYBALL Leslie Caphart and Diane Ross steadied this year's Girl’s Volleyball Team through a tough season. They had an opportunity to win both the league and the district title but fell short on both tries. Like the boy's team, the girl’s team could have used more spectator support. Kahlil Gibran PAUL ZIMMERMAN PETER ZOGAS KATHRYN ZENTNER REGINA ZAYAITZ - IN MEMORY There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. A time to be born and a time to die, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to seek and a time to lose, A time to love. — Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 We come to school to learn, to reach, to gain, to find, that which is hardest to find, ourselves. 204 205 Your Friends Say They'll Keep in Touch, but You Know They Won’t. Your Teachers Say Come Back and See Them. And You Know You Won't. Maybe Someday It Won’t Matter, but Right Now It Hurts. 206 My Kind Words I want to let you know somehow, it's so much clearer now. I'd quickly turn the pages back. But time will notallow. The way these days have passed me by — Too fast to last, too vast, too strong. Standing before an open window, staring far away, I can almost feel the southern wind touching my restless days. A child’s drawings left there on the table, A woman’s gown clinging to the floor. I struggle to speak my mind, but in the end can only cry. Suddenly it’s so hard to find the words to say good bye. I soon must leave, it’s just as well. Keep my drawings, if you're able, wear my gown. I’ll remember for awhile — Farewell. K. Gibbs CLASS OF 1978 DIRECTORY ADAMS, KEITH 7 Hillcrest Dr., Macungie ALBRIGHT, KATHLEEN 72 S. We will ever hold in keeping Thoughts of these dear wisdom mills. Alma Mater! Alma Mater! Hear our song of thanks to thee! Hold in keeping, joy and weeping. Hold our blessed memory. Hear these silent stone walls shouting Hear their words of would-be woe Hear them plead with hopes and doubting Hear them tell us not to go. Alma Mater! Alma Mater! Hear our song of thanks to thee! Hold in keeping, joy and weeping. Hold our blessed memory. Gone is our gay “learned company. Gone those days which are of yore; Much we did in rooms now empty Things we’ll do and see no more. Alma Mater! Alma Mater! Hear our song of thanks to thee! Hold in keeping, joy and weeping. Hold our blessed memory. - ' . , • - - . . - •. • . • ■ - . . . . - . - ■ - - • • ' ■ V ’ -■ . • • ‘ • • ■ • ; - - • ' . • • 'V . ; - ’ ' • . ■- ' • ‘ •?'- ......... -■■•• r- -... ■ - v •. . - ■- s ' , •' - X. ••;• -. v —V • - ;V - N. •
