Administration Mr. DcLancy entered his fourth year here at E.H.S., having followed our senior class through from our freshman year. Whenever possible, Mr. DeLancy met with club and class officers, and with other students who desired to talk with him. Any student wishing to see Mr. Miller, the assist- ant principal, had to peer through a jungle of leaves. The reason for the abundance of greenery is Mr. Miller’s interest in horticulture. ABOVE: Principal William T. DeLancy. BELOW: Secretaries Ruby Adamchak, Frances Wood. Assistant Principal Albert Miller. 22 E.H.S. Administration Students expecting to see Mr. Neff behind the assistant principal’s desk were in for a surprise. This position has been filled by Mr. Wehr, the new assistant principal, who helped Mr. Miller work on scheduling, attendance, and discipline. In addition to the busy secretaries, students could also be found working in the main office. Girls from the business education section helped out with office duties, working the switchboard and running errands. ABOVE: Assistant Principal Richard H. Wehr. BELOW RIGHT: Attendance Secretary Ruth Huyctt. 23 Guidance There were a number of new things to be found in the guidance suite this year. For one thing, there was a new counselor, Mrs. Sylvia S. Havlish, who took the place of Mr. Tuttle. Another newcomer was Mr. Richard Baran, who served his internship in counseling here, talking with students and trying to help them in any way he could. To help students with plans for college, a file was started which contained over 300 college brochures for easy reference. Another new reference aid was the Career Skills Matrix, which helped students find what would be required of them in dif- ferent occupations. Information about future careers could also be found in the military and Pennscript microf ischc career cards. BELOW: Mrs. Sylvia Havlish and Miss Mildred Strauss. ABOVE: Helene Schafer and Kathleen Imschweilcr. 24 BELOW: Mr. Evan E. Richards and Mr. Herman Corradetti. 25 English Few changes were made as the English department entered its fourth and final year of the quarter system. Course offerings were basically the same, except for a new course which was included to prepare highly moti- vated Juniors to take the advanced Placement English course next term. Students in Research Paper Classes took trips to Kutz- town State College. Mrs. Yoder returned from her sabbatical leave, and Mr. Diely of the Emmaus Jr. High faculty taught a few classes, as did Mr. Maxwell of the Foreign Language department. Plans for next year include a revision of the curriculum, whereby quarterly courses will be combined into semester and year courses. Mr. James Basara Mr. Paul R. Besides Algebra and Geometry, students can take interesting subjects like Consumer Math and Recreational Math, which have recently been introduced into the curriculum. The main goal of these math courses is to make the student aware of the necessity of math in everyday life. An added attraction of this department is Mr. Sthare’s dating service, which has created several lasting relation- ships. Mr. Richard L. Black Mr. Albere L. Henning Mrs. JaneOtt Mrs. Edythe Rubens 32 33 Business Education The faculty of the Business Education department teaches students skills that will be required of them in the business world. The students did basi- cally the same things they did previously; holding conversations in a foreign tongue, reading European magazines, performing skits, and in the case of the German III classes, videotaping an entire television show. Work in the language lab was abandoned because it was inoperable, but a new lab is being planned for next year. Also planned for next year is the initiation of an Advanced Placement Spanish Course and the continua- tion of Advanced Placement German. In April, many students got an opportunity to use their skills on foreign language trips. Mrs. Nancy E. Krcsslcy Mrs. Deborah Nelson Mr. Sterling M. Ritter Mrs. Dolores K. Southwell 36 Mrs. Janice A. Students are given indi- vidual attention by teachers who help them with their classes. Better techniques in read- ing and personal study habits arc stressed. There is also a program in which honor stu- dents work with those who are in need of help, tutoring them in their weaker subjects. A small library of books that arc interesting to students is provided to help them develop better reading skills. Also a part of the Special Services is the school nurse. Miss Graver, who returned after a year’s absence. 39 Physical Education As the third quarter rolled around, the halls buzzed with the usual question, What’s being offered in gym?” Only this time there was a new answer — Yoga. Mrs. Huber put together a yoga program, and it caught on. Gym classes were not the same when Miss Schmick was hospitalized, but she returned within a month and it was good to have her back again. They raised over $1,000 this year through spaghetti dinners, chicken dinners, school store, maga- zine sales, and the after-football dances. They also held their annual Greaser Week, Student Government Day, and a spring carnival. On the other hand, SGA made significant gains for the benefit of our school. They began music in the cafeteria during lunch- time, revised the constitution, and devised an honors passes system. The members of SGA did a fine job and the group is looking for- ward to continue their progress next year. SGA OFFICERS. The Song in Their Hearts Our Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus per- formed together for two evening perform- ances during the 1976-1977 school year. At these shows, these students enlightened the hearts of many through their music and voice. The two choruses found a song and cheerful melody in every holiday. During Christmas, the Concert Choir was involved in caroling for the yuletidc. Also, throughout the year, the groups performed at elementary schools and inspired many children with their beautiful tunes. The 1977 County Chorus held one per- formance on March 5, 1977. Emmaus High School was one of nine schools to have tal- ented vocalists recognized. These students, numbering well over twenty in number, were recommended by our music department. Con- gratulations to these gifted vocalists. 67 Students at EHS . . . No one will forget those hilarious skits by our Pep Club and Soul Brothers. These stu- dents worked hard creating entertainment for pep rallies, selling candy and buttons and marching every Friday for our football team. In addition, they held fund-raising projects all year long. With this money, they hope to buy plaques for our athletes. With the cheers from this crowd, found at every game, they boosted spirit and morale and gave our teams a reason to win. PEP CLUB OFFICERS. Mindy Gocpfcrt (Treasurer), Ann Gechtcr (Secretary). The books pile up, lockers fill up, and the burden of homework attacks us. We put our minds to the grind- stone and our noses in the books. It’s not all that bad. We meet old friends and make new friends. Through all the sweat of school, we laugh, cry, and share our experi- ences. It’s a long road ahead, but somehow we manage. And we make it! 78 . . . Fullspeed Into a New Year 1977 was the year of bomb scares, an energy crisis, and a wicked winter. How can we forget chose days in freezing classrooms and for some — those days in the PIT. In 1977, Rocky” was the movie, disco” was the sound, and everyone loved Fridays. By Friday afternoon, students were itching for the weekend, fidgety and raring to go. Oh, Thank God for Fridays! A special thanks goes to our wo photographers, Allen Haines and Rich Martin. These two guys did a great job and we thank them for their performances in photogra- phy. 79 Fun Times at the Sadie Hawkins . . . Once a year, we free ourselves from school and spend an enjoyable evening in the world of fantasy. We adorn ourselves with the cos- tumes of farm life and Halloween and we’re off to the Sadie Hawkins! Each couple pays their respects to the pastor of the dance, Mar- ry in’ Sam. This year, men dressed like ladies and ladies dressed like men. This made it a lit- tle difficult for the girls to ask a guy, since many went as girls. At least, those who enjoyed the hand-clapping and knee-slapping music will remember this annual event. 80 . . . Seniors “Play” It Up The seniors battled through fearless snow- storms and several cancellations, but never- theless, they performed an outstanding play. In Bus Stop,” the audience observed the hilarious antics of small town citizens as a bus is stranded in their town. Bo Decker, played by Allen Haines, tries to carry a beautiful young girl, Sheri, played by Jenny Matthews off to his home in Montana. Finally, through it all, they decide Montana would be a nice place to live after all. Special thanks is awarded to Miss Gordin and Roxanne Fritz, the two directors. Their patience and guidance was greatly appreci- ated. 81 Fall Brings Chilly Weather And . . . The air is chilly, but filled with excite- ment. It’s Turkey Time again. As the football team prepares for their rival, Whitehall, the school perks up with the signs of Thanksgiv- ing. Halls are plastered with victory signs, a bonfire is carefully created and guarded, and a pep rally is in sight. Each student ponders the question, Will we win?” Finally, as the holiday arrives, cheers fill the gym. Excitement fills the air as all await the crowning of our queen. This year, a cheer- ful Claudia Merkle was crowned as the 1976 Football Queen. Meanwhile, the team anx- iously awaits their last game of the season. Although we lost in honorable defeat, no other excitement will be remembered as well as the memories of Thanksgiving at EHS! 82 . . . The Thrill of Thanksgiving 83 My Fair Lady. . . 84 . . . Wasn’t It “Loverly” In mid March, the months of hard work and labor was received by the public. This tre- mendous work was the spring musical. My Fair Lady. The story, beginning in the early 1900’s, was depicting the efforts of a young eccentric man to develop a girl into a woman. As it turns out they eventually get married and live happily ever after. Allen Haines and Joy Bibik did a fine job portraying the roles of Professor Henry Hig- gins and Eliza Doolittle. The entire cast worked hard and practiced daily. The general public claimed the spring musical as a raving success. Special thanks go to Albert Neumeyer, director, and Shirlee K. Neumeyer, choreog- rapher. They did a fine job on our school’s ninth musical. 85 A Wonderful Evening . . . As the end of the year rapidly approached, juniors had only one thing on their minds. While the girls anxiously waited for an invi- tation, the guys tried to get up their nerve. Students then began to prepare for an event- ful evening, the Junior Prom. The Junior Prom was held at the Holiday Inn with the theme, You’ve Got A Friend, setting the mood. Couples danced the night away to the tunes of Captain Flagg. During the course of the evening, those individuals working with dedication for the junior class were announced as the court. All couples had an experience with beautiful memories they will never forget. 86 . . . Junior Prom — “You’ve Got A Friend” 87 “The Long And Winding Road” . . . 88 . . . A Beautiful Way To End As Seniors prepared eagerly for the end of their high school days, they also spent one last evening recalling memories with friends, enjoying themselves, and living it up. At the Senior Ball, couples danced and rocked through the evening. The Senior Ball, depicted by the theme The Long And Winding Road. was held at Holiday Inn on May 28. 1977. Music by Red Delicious was provided into the wee hours of the night. As the evening went on, couples danced to Play That Funky Music” and romanced to Stairway to Heaven.” The eve- ning was lovely and beautiful for all with memories that will be everlasting! 89 The Year May End But. . . 90 . . . Memories Linger Memories — Light the corners of my mind Misty Water colored memories Of the way we were. Scattered pictures — Of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way wc were. Can it be that it was All so simple then. Or has time rewritten Every line? If we had the chance to Do it all again, would we? Could we? Memories — May be beautiful, and yet. What’s too painful to remember We simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter — We will remember Whenever wc remember The way we were. Under her leadership and with the assistance of Linda Schmick, the EHS field hockey team recorded a winning 9-4-5 season. Although graduation had caused the loss of many key players the girls came through showing a com- petitive spirit and an enthusiasm for the sport. Sen- ior captain Pat Kahlc led her team through exhaust- ing practices and many close games. Their record which includes 5 ties reflects the number of tight games that this year’s team was involved in. This year success both in goal scoring and on defense was due to a strong team effort. The following repre- sented Emmaus in the State Competition: Linda Bcrges, Kathy Engleman, Jane Ikeda and Simone Fratrick in the Med- ley Relay and Marcia Gregory in Diving. Marcia, taking a sec- ond at the District 11 competition and placed tenth at the State Championship, is the first girl swimmer or diver from Emmaus to place in the top 12 at States. 114 First Row: Michclc Fratrick (mgr.), Marcia Gregory, Sally Paulas, Rcnc Fayad, Coach Claire Alice Rahn, Ass’t Coach Defiore. The season proved to be a very tough one for the Hor- nets after the loss of 9 seniors through graduation. The team’s win streak of 69 straight wins was snapped by Allen in a heart- breaking 88-84 loss in the Allen pool. Individual honors went to the medley relay team of Rob Huey, Bruce Ikeda, Mark Druckenmiller and Chad Crandell, second team all-league and second in Districts. The 400 yard freestyle relay of Mike Haas, Jeff Trembley, Matt Shane and Chad Cran- dell was fi rst team All-League and placed first in districts. Last year five out of the ten top teams in the state were from District 11. The most memorable match was beating Dicruff on their home mat, while the most disappointing match was losing to Whitehall in a very contested match. All in all we are proud of the wrestlers who stayed and had the courage to face some of the top teams in the state. VARSITY. Despite the fact that this year’s team was fairly young and inex- perienced, several factors contributed to the success- ful season. Defense was the team’s strong point. The girls allowed their opponents to score only 17 runs, as compared to their own 82 for a 5 game streak. Sue Carraher and Alice Nonnemacher were the major power hitters of the team, and tri-captain Erin Findley was the best all around team player. Hornets Injury Plagued The 1977 Boys Baseball Season started off looking good with a victory over league power Dieruff, 4-2. However, their story soon turned to one of misfortune when three of the team’s starting seniors, Rich Gair, Dave Morris and Jack Jones, suffered injuries. Despite these setbacks, there were several capable play- ers who picked up the slack. Senior Stan Toth and under- classmen Mark Roberts and Bruce Hamschcr were great assets to the team, each hitting over 300. Roberts also con- tributed to the effort by pitching for much of the season. The Hornets endured many honorable defeats, losing many games by only one or two runs. VARSITY. Bottom Row: Mark Roberts, Stott Rammer, Doug Focht. Andy Cavcrly. Returning Lettermen Set Pace Over one-half of this year's Boys Track ream are com peeing in track for the first time this year. However, with some of the returning lettermen to act as team leaders the year should be termed a learning one. In spite of their dual meet record of 3 wins and 7 losses, the crack team contin- ued to improve throughout the season. The strong events for this year’s track team were: weights. John Baranchok. Drew Marsh, Jay Snyder and K. C Keeler; distance, Steve Werley, Paul McLaughlin, Jim Kopenhaver. Mark Ricder and Paul Zimmerman; hurdles, Warren Hyde; pole vault. Mike Tyson; high jump, Pete Hobson and triple jump. Tom Feglev. 124 Sitting: Steve Miller, Bruce Polstcr, Ian Campbell, Paul Zimmerman, Mark Ricticr, Jim Guldin, Bryan Bray. This fine performance won the team a second place finish in the Hast Penn League. Spirit Let’s go Hornets we’re right behind you!”, could well be the slogan of the Emmaus spirited Cheerleading Squads. Beginning their busy year with summer practice, cheerleading camp, and a lot of hard work, the cheerleaders arc constant advocates of school spirit. They arc also involved in soliciting patrons for the Booster Club, painting signs, planning and decorating pep rallies and cheering at athletic games. Under the direction of Mr. Yeakel, the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders created new cheers in 1976-77. This year’s co-captains were Ann Gcchter and Claudia Merkle. J.V. He was my confidant, my companion, my friend. He was someone who kept to himself, yet loved people. He was an athlete, a human being, and our classmate. Mike meant a lot to many people but to me he was truly someone special. He and I spent many happy hours growing up together, laughing together, and dreaming of our future together. It is these happy times for which we should remember Mike and to these good memories we should dedicate this pictorial account of our senior year. We dedicate this page to Michael Harman, not to his death but to his life. His life was one of patience, perseverance, and courage. Mike’s courage should serve as a model for us all to follow. 221 John P. And then it is well to give what you have found a gift into the world for whoever will accept it. —Jonathon Livingston Seagull 232 Taylor Publishing Company llnsilco
