Teachers began organizing their les- sons and preparing theirselves for the headaches and agonies of the classroom. Students bought school supplies and began practicing on how to get up early in the morning. Then finally the day struck. On August 21, school opened and the mass confu- sion and homework began. The Student Body Officers welcomed us all in the opening assembly and Mr. Swinburne informed us of our expecta- tions as students. Kent Bunderson, Jimmy Jones, and Todd Jeffs were introduced as new facul- ty members. The sophomores were lost and con- fused not quite knowing where their next classroom would be. To the juniors and seniors everything felt like home, all ex- cept for the new bus stops and the athle- tic facilities. Within two weeks though, everything seemed normal. New friendships were made, and old ones renewed. Soon the 1985-’86 school year was off to a start, and before we could realize it we were ALL IN IT TOGETHER!!! 2 1- Debbie Eden singing in the Homecoming assembly. 2- Darrin Fairbanks. The studentbody pulled together and joined in as one to create the most school spirit shown in years. The activities began with Spirit Week. During the week each day had a theme, ranging from Dress Up day to Jersey Day, and even Nerd Day. “Homecoming was more exciting than I’ve seen it in years. Many people made comments to me on how well everything was organized. They were impressed with the school spirit demonstrated by the stu- dent body,” commented Laurie Brad- bury, who was crowned the 1985-86 Homecoming Queen. The Homecoming assembly was a memorable one. Everyone will remember Neil Peacock’s cartwheels. The Student Body Officers put on a “Spirit raising tele- a-thon,“ and by the end of the assembly they’d raised over 1 million dollars in spir- it. The Senior girls went into the Powder Puff game with very little hope of a victo- ry. They were out-numbered in size and in people but finally over-ruled the Juniors with a 14-6 victory. The Football Team battled for a victory over South Sevier. The final score was 40 to 17. During half- time the Drill Team performed to “New Attitude’’ by Patty Labell, which was choreographed by the drill mistresses. On Friday afternoon, the parade was held. As far as anyone could remember, it had the most entries in ECH’s history. The Senior class float was awarded “the Most Beautiful Float,” and the Drama Club demonstrated the South Sevier Marching Band. The Homecoming Dance was held on Saturday night, where the Homecom- ing Royalty was announced. The King Queen were Chris Olsen and Laurie Brad- bury; the 1st attendants were Davin Stil- son and Geri Lyn Thomas; and the 2nd attendants were Joel Wilson and Lori Matsen. The theme was “Cherish” by Kool and the Gang, and the band was London Bridge. Al- though the Spartans started slow los- ing 4 out of their first 5 games. They finished strong winning their final 3 games of the season. The Spartans put it all together with a convincing 40-17 Homecoming vic- tory over South Sevier. They followed this victory with a 28-0 thrashing of Millard. The Spartans ended the regu- lar season with a dramatic 7-3 win over Juab at home. This win gave the Spar- tans a 4-3 region record and 4th place over all in Region ten out of nine teams. The 4th place finish enabled the Spartans to host a 1st round playoff game to the Manti Templars. The year was also highlighted by the building of a new football field and 75 players on the team. The J.V. had a very successful year finishing with 6 wins and 2 losses. 1- Davin Stilson runs with the ball during the Richfield game. 2- Coach Jones watches on while the team works hard at summer practice. 19 Volleyball 1- Kym Estes setting the ball. 2- Varsity team members. 3- Laura Sadler and Kristen Estes blocking a spike. 4- Cindy Jones and Michelle Riley putting up a good defense. 5- Janice Farnsworth spiking the ball over the net. 6- Michelle Riley spiking it over for a win. However, as we fell 0-2 behind Mantis perfectly timed hits and dinks. We just didn’t pull it together. We found ourselves on a streak after that and won all of the remaining games except two seasons with a 12-4 record. We split with Gunnison and with Richfield. We went to the region tournament with a 3rd place seat and high expectations. We did exceptionally well in Pool play and en- tered the tournament the following day also in third. The rest is history. We lost to Manti, which put us in the losers bracket, then gained a win over San Juan. We then played South Sevier for a chance to go to State. We lost in 3 games and for the Lady Spartans, the season had ended. 1- Dell Stilson in action. 2- Varsity team members: Coach J.R. Nelson. Scott Stilson. Bobby Higgins. Wade Jewkes, Scott Can- non. Two senior members of the team, Stu- art Albrecht and Troy Arnold, were named to the academic all-state team and Stuart Albrecht received the honor of being named to the All-State Team. 23 Girls Basketball 1 Basketball season proved to be fair- ly successful for the lady Spartans. There were several returning varsity members from last year’s squad. The Lady Spartans were able to qualify for State this year and place 6th. “We had a very talented team, we just weren’t able to put it all together at State.” Replied Miss Reed. The best game of the season came in Region Competition when the Lady Spartans were matched against Juab. Travis Taylor. Jessie Allred. 26 The 1985-86 Wrestling team can be described in the words of Charles Dick- ens, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times — The team had some injurys it hadn’t counted on. These took away some good wrestlers, but the young, developing talent stepped in and filled their spots. On the brighter side, this year the team was extremely close knit. Coach Hansen summed it up when he said, “When one of you stub your toe the rest yell.” The closeness of the team helped throughout the year and credit for much of its success must be given to this spirit of “oneness.” Over all the year had some depress- ing times where nothing went right, as well as times when everything went our way. At the state tournament everyone gave their all. Two third place medals were received by Seth McCourt and Ken Winder. Dustin Taylor received a fifth place medal. The rest of the team did a tremendous job. A great deal of hard work, team effort, and sacrifice made the 1985-86 Wrestling year one to be remembered. 3 27 Baseball The baseball team had high expectations for the new season. This year’s team had a lot of depth and talent. With most of last years team returning, they had a great advantage over ev- eryone else. With a new coach, field, and new uniforms, the team looked really HOT! Although the year ended without reaching their destiny of the State Tournament, we were all still proud of our guys! 4 1- Devin Arnold in a close play at first against Union. 2- Darrin Hurdsman at 2nd base throwing the ball to 1st. 3- Shon Roper hoping for an out. 4- Catcher Wade Jewkes throws the ball to 3rd base. 5- SAFE!!! They improved their skills by participating in a cheerleading camp during the summer where they received several awards. Many spectators during the region basket- ball tournaments commented that Emery High had the most school spirit throughout the state and a great deal of gratitude goes to the cheer- leaders for that. Overall, the cheerleaders did a great job, and will always be remembered for their spirit. i 1- The cheerleaders ride in the Home- coming parade. 2- The cheerleaders cheering their team on. 3- Fight, fight, fight!!!! 4- The Cheerleaders Shauna Gordon DeDe Rhodes Missy Wood Joye Peacock Mascot Drill Team The Spardettes began their busy year going to drill team camp in Cedar City. Practices began a week before school where they prepared themselves for the opening assembly and the first home football game. Geniel Huntington, the advisor, once com- mented, I'm not sure it’s the best drill team I’ve ever had, but it’s sure one of the stran- gest!” The girls awaited the arrival of their new uni- forms. Finally, towards the end of January, they arrived. Unlike the traditional school colors, the new uniforms were unique, flashy, and purple. Many people questioned their color, but overall they were impressed. Their last performance was at Drill team competition, where they placed 6th overall. In May they sponsored the Preference Ball and it’s theme was “Now and Forever” by Anne Murray. The drill team at camp. After the marching season was over we went on to pep band. We played at the football and basketball games. After pep band we moved on to a more serous note, symphonic band. After months of hard work, the bnad went to Utah State Univer- sity where Emery took first place. Then a cou- ple of weeks later the band went to Grand Junction Colorado and came home with first place. Emery High hosted the region band competition that decided who would go to State. Emery won that competition and later went to Taylorville High School for the state competition and got first in their division. Many road blocks slowed their drive down to get the yearbook out on time. To begin the year, the yearbook room was broken into which created many problems for the staff. The door would not lock, and there- fore many valuable pictures were taken from the room. Although, the staff had a bad start, slowly the work that they had done began to look more and more like a yearbook, a book in which they are proud of. A book in which We’re All In It Together. He immediately liked the people that he went to school with. Gary says that school has been good to him. It really has been fun. He thinks that making school fun is the easiest way to learn, and that it has helped him learn more. I tried to participate in all that I could-Math, Science, English, Drama, Speech, Leadership, It kept me from getting bored with any one thing. Gary’s participation brought him many things besides awards, such as Debate and math championships, Busi- ness award, and leadership awards, it brought him a lot of fun, and a lot more opportunities, and importantly an understanding of people. 60 GARY GILBERT Honors Left to right: Karla Seely. As Sophomores they all made it through Driver's Ed. alive, and were the last class to have Mr. Arnold as a teacher. When they became Juniors, they won the 1st Battle of the Classes and ruled the school. Their Junior Prom was held on April 19th, and the theme was “One More Night” by Phil Collins. The colors for the prom were blue and silver. As Seniors they met in August for Senior pictures and ordered graduation announcements in October. Again they proved theirselves as “Ruler of the School, when they won the 2nd annual Battle of the Classes. Their Senior Christmas Dance was held on December 14th with the theme Silver Bells. They all busily prepared and anxiously looked forward for May 23rd when they graduated from Emery High School to go on to bigger and better things. Some got married, and some went on to more school which suddenly changed their lives from being just high school students. They were no longer “students” at Emery High, they are now part of the alumni. 72 Seniors 1st attendants: Stewart Albrecht and Ingrid Bellander. King: Lars Landro’. Queen: Stacy Aiken. 1st attendants: Laurie Bradbury and Jared Huntsman. Foreign Exchange Every year Emery High is blessed with the opportunity to bring a dif- ferent culture into our lives through the Foreign Exchange Program. This years exchange students were Ingrid Bellander from Sweden; Lars Landro’ from Norway; and Matthias Kerestesch from Germany. They were three special people who brought a certain excitement to many of our lives that we’ll never forget. 73 Senior Personalities Most Likely To Succeed Most Athletic Kym Estes and Shon Roper Most Friendly Karla Seely and Gary Gilverl Most All-Around Megan Mower and Troy Arnold Most Natural Donna Carr and Jared Huntsman Easiest On Eyes 74 Chris Olsen and Laurie Bradbury Stephanie Shiben and Steve Oviatt Best Dressed Most Western Shellee Hardee and Darrell Huntsman Most School Spirit Marlene Tucker and Brent Sitterued Most Unique Collette Wareham and Robert Johansen Craziest Michelle Smith and Lavell Fish Most Talented Tawna Clement and Todd Magleby 75 Steven Boyce and Karen Morlan Senior Talent Night Senior Talent turned out to be a great suc- cess. A junior is a student who has finally adjusted to school, yet he doesn’t quite have “senioritis.” He hangs out in the main hall, knows his way around, and is willing to challenge any sophomore on any subject. Along with J.R.’s English, lots of juniors take type, algebra, and bi- ology. They are preparing for the next year, the art of getting excused from as many classes as possible, and they are making their mark on Emery High. The class of 1987 has successfully done their part in contributing to the year’s activities. They had several fund- raises including a pork raffle and magic show; the annual Jr. Prom under the theme of: “This Could Be The Night’’ turned out exceptionally well; and what would school activities be without the ju- niors? They participated in nearly every club, team, staff, and musical group; and they added their support to the making of a year to remember. 81 Bobbi Stevens. Hard at work? This year marked the largest sopho- more class to ever enroll at Emery High School. Their presence was definitely no- ticed as they helped to lengthen the lunch lines and crowd the hall. Among other things, the class of 1988 constructed a homecoming float and sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. With a matching shirt contest, marriage ceremonies, and Kick-a-poo Joy-Juice, everyone was in for a good time at the most radical dance of the year. Said class president, Devin Arnold, “Sophomores get the last of everything.” They do seem to have a tough time get- ting adjusted to high school at first, but give them a few weeks, and the sopho- mores fit in well with the rest of the stu- dent'body. Sophomores Principal Robert Swinburne. Principal Vice Principal 98 Mr. Wakefield. Counselor Mr. Swinburne has been one of the best principals a school could have. He is always been very supportive of the activities and helped out in any way possible. This past year though, the high school had to do without him for a few months, because he had a severe heart attack. Fund raisers were held to help raise money for him and many cards and letters were sent to hime to let him know that we cared. We struggled without him, but the school stayed in good shape. Everyone was glad to see him return because we couldn’t have found a better man to do the job anywhere. Mr. Wakefield was more to students than just a high school counselor. He was always willing to help a student with any of the many problems he or she might have. Mr. Wakefield was in charge of records kept on the students. Secretaries What would everyone do without Sandi and May? They’ve always been there to help you with whatever you could possi- bly need. Although, they get grouchy ev- ery once in a while, it can only be expect- ed. After all, could you handle 350 stu- dents’ problems everyday? 99 Surprise Sandi!!! Faculty K. The Student Council did a great job in helping to get everyone involved this year. They helped to make Homecoming one of the best ever. They kept a lot of old traditions but also brought in a lot of new ideas for actovotoes. They supported many of the organizations and brought a lot of school spirit into the school. Over- all, they made this year a memorable one for all. 1- The swearing in of Cindy Jones to the position of President for 1986-87. 2- Megan Mower and Gary Gilbert in Senior Talent Night. What would students do without hot lunches and someone to constantly clean up after them? They’d be 7-11 creatures with trash all around them. That’s why, whether we show it or not, we are all thankful towards Emery High’s lunch ladies and custodians. This year the lunch ladies sold rolls, icee’s, and many other snacks to help raise money to improve our lunches, and purchase a new salad bar stand and a microwave. The custodians helped to keep our school in tip top shape. Everyday during sixth period, you could find them picking candy wrappers, gum, and all other kinds of trash up out of the halls. In the evenings the “Listher family” would arrive to plish and sweep the halls and parking lots. Thanks for all of your effort and hard work. 104 105 PRIDE Smile! Smile! Smile! Smile! Smile!
