BLUEPRINT FOR A NEW YEAR 1982 Emery County High School Castle Dale, Utah -UEPRINT FOR A NEW YE Emery High School is going through a construction period this year. We are be- ginning to expand and to grow. The stu- dents of Emery are growing too. We are I constructing our talents, personalities, ideas, and emotions. Day by day, we go through experiences that are helping us to mature and grow. They help to mold us into the person we desire. When a person looks back into his past, he remembers the best things, and all of the happy times he had. We must plan what we want, and make a blueprint of a better year. To the untrained eye, it looks just like that—a bunch of lines, yet, we all know something beautiful and majestic will emerge. So it is with us, the students of Emery County High School. Our lives, to us, may seem jumbled, but if given time, and the right care, something beautiful, wonderful, and memorable will emerge. This year students are taking classes that will help them to get into a profession of their choosing. We are developing our ideals, emotions, and personal- ities to help us become the person we want to be ... to complete our dreams. This year, our school is being built into a struc- ture that is bigger, nicer, and better than ever before. The students are better than they have ever been. We are combining the physical, intellectual, and emotional parts of the year to make this, the 1981-1982 school year Better Than Ever!!! A. Homecoming seems to be one of the most exciting events of the school year. This year we started it off with certain dress up days, ranging from fairy tale characters to nerds. This really helped boost our spirits up. Also, the traditional Powderpuff football game was a change. The Juniors made their presence known to the Seniors, by beating them 20-6. This is the first time in several years that the Juniors have come out victorious. The traditional parade was cancelled once again, much to the dismay of the students. The assembly was well performed and a lot of effort was shown. Emery met the Grantsville Cowboys for their Homecoming Game. In spite of the team's tremen- dous efforts, we were defeated 15-9. A lot of effort was shown and appreciated. A. Jerry Cox lets go of the ball B. A Cowboy receiver gets crushed by Bernerd Zwahlen C. Kelly Ballow gains yardage on a running play. D. The Homecoming Royalty- Annette Morley. Cindy Mortenswn, and Sel- ma Cox—make their entrance during the game. E. The cheerleaders cheering the team on. C 10 Homecoming B 12 Homecoming A. Patricia Snow. Trudy Hansen, and Peggy Jus- tice are dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters Homecoming 13 A ASSEMBLIES Our assemblies have ranged from fun to edu- cational, yet, they always seemed to be interest- ing. The assemblies this year have been different from those we have had in the past. For example, the Brunsen Burners were some exceptional trum- pet players. There were, also, the B.Y.U. Jazz en- semble, and the frisbee experts, and several oth- ers. These weren't our only good assemblies. The assemblies put on by our own student body showed great effort and tremendous potential for the students participating in them. A great amount of work went into our assemblies. Tre- mendous effort, practice, talent, and involve- ment was shown. Each assembly, somehow, has helped us to grow and develop. Assemblies B A The cowboy sings his songs. B. Allisha Price and Mary Jane Enke in a comedy routine C. Performing at the Homecoming Assembly are Rodney Morley. Chad Mead. Gay- land Dugmore. and Steven Niebergall as a Barbershop Quartet. D. After a rigorous dance routine. LaDawn Johansen takes a break on Santa Claus' lap. during the Christmas Assembly E. Thinking their discussing the same subject. Boyd Lake and Wade Peacock only manage to confuse one another even more Assemblies 15 The Odd Couple The contrast between Oscar and Felix in the play, The Odd Couple , sent the audience into fits of laughter several times. The cast portrayed their characters very well. The play, itself, was a real-life situation, so the characters could relate to the incidents. The Drama Department performed the play three nights for the public, and then went on to present it before the student body. It was a great success. This is the club's first year of working with Mrs. Terrie Shoemaker. Some of the members were asked what they thought of her. They stated that she was extremely talented, and knew how to get the job done. We are proud of the efforts that were shown by the cast, and all who worked on the play. They should all be commended for their efforts and the time spent. CAST OF CHARACTERS Louis Johnson David Owens John Jorgensen Kenny Snowball David Hilliard .. It was about the life of people in the fantasy world of carnivals. It re- layed that this often dreamed about life is not what it is worked up to be. The excitement of it is often unreal. Quite often, the people are rejected. In the end of the play, you find that people mask their true feelings. They put up a front of strength, when in reali- ty they are weak. The cast did a great job of portraying their parts. They should be commended for a job well done. They put effort and time into the production. They did a su- per job. 18 Musical CAST OF CHARACTERS Ben Clements ... Paul Alisha Price ... Lilly John Jorgensen ... Marco Mary Jane Enke ... Rosalee Evan Wilson ... Doctor Dale Matson ... Cheerleaders add excitement to a success- ful game, and hope and determination to a game when we're behind. We would like to thank the cheerleaders for all the help and support that they give to the school. They did a fine job this year. There are six students that qulified for this Ro- deo- Mike Behling, Mike Allred, Kash Winn, Hank Neilson, Todd Allred and James Sherman. This year's officers were Mike Behling as Presi- dent, and Mike Allred as Vice-president. These officers have a tremendous duty. They need to make sure all the contestant's names are sent in to the rodeo grounds so that they can draw out the horse, bull, etc. that they are to ride. They went to the State Finals at B.Y.U. and placed 1st. The team practiced and worked hard. We are proud to have them representing our school. Angela Rinaldi, Annette Snow, Margaret Weber. Karen Burton Lorie Jones, Natalie Atwood. Kristine Tucker, Lisa Caldwell, Sandra Anderson During Athletics, you can know for a certain- ty that when track season comes along, the girls will be running and exercising — trying to get into condition for the upcoming events. Our track team had an excellent year this year. They were a strong team and had depth in every event. They won 9 out of 14 meets and went on to State. Karen Nelson was named the most outstand- ing girl on the team. Her events include the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter runs, the medley- relay, and the long jump. There are 2 Senior members on the team that will be graduating this year. Margaret We- ber runs the 200 meter and all 3 of the relays. Angela Rinaldi runs the 100 meter hurdles, the High Jump, the mile relay and the 300 meter hurdles. 52 Girls Track The track team had a good year this year. Coach James Nelson was really proud ot their efforts and accomplishments this season. The team placed at all the major track meets. This led them onto their way to the State Meet where they took 4th place. Coach Nelson was proud of each of the members. But, he says that his most outstand- ing athlete is Kelly Farnsworth. The 880 run, shot-put, and discus throw are the events Kelly participates in. He placed at State in all three events. Track is basically an individual sport. No other team mate can do the running for you. Maybe this is why it is such a complicated and de- manding sport. It puts a lot of pressure on the participants because it is so individualized. Few people realize the dedication and hard work that the girls put into this organization. There are early morning practices that must be attended and they often times continue their practices in each individual home. The girls have realized what it takes to make up a team. Although they realize that they must perform well individually, they also know that if they don't work well with their team members, the drill is not a success. The girls worked hard this year. They placed 2nd in the Region Meet. They also drilled at the State Basketball games and did a great job. We are proud of our Drill Team this year. We would like to commend them for their efforts and dedication. 56 Drill Team Barbara Grant. McKette Hinkins. LaDawn Johansen. Annette Snow. Sharon Larsen. Lynette DeBos. Myrna Umphenour. We really appreciate their time spent. The Jazz Band received a superior rating at the B.Y.U. Jazz Festival. They received 1's at both the Region and State Festivals. They have the responsibility of setting budgets, formulat- ing policies, and allocating funds. They make several of the major decisions that effect us daily in our school. We are in the process of building onto our school. We are adding an auditorium, lunch- room, and they have put in several new class- rooms and a library. There is no way possible we could have this done without the approval of the School Board. We appreciate the hlep and the support they give to our school. We might not see or hear from them very often, but they are con- stantly doing something to make our school system work more efficiently. Superintendent.
