I will tell you girl I want to build my world around you Tell you that it’s true I want to make you understand I’m talking about a lifetime plan. That's the way it began We were hand in hand Glen Miller's band was better than before We yelled and screamed for more and I wanted you and envy made us dance across the room It ended all too soon On the way back home I promised you would never be alone. Hurry don’t be late I can hardly wait I said to myself when we re old We'll go dancing in the dark walking through the park and reminiscing. Friday night it was late I was walking you home We got down to the gate and I was dreaming of the night Would it turn out right? Now as the years roll on Each time we hear our favorite song Memories come along Older times we re missing Spending the hours reminiscing. Hurry, don’t be late I can hardly wait I said to myself when we re old We ll go dancing in the dark Walking through the park and reminiscing. Reminiscing «1978 FIBERCHEM INTERNATIONAL B.V. All Administrative Rights for the U S A Canada controlled by COLGEM-EMI MUSIC INC All Rights Reserved Used by Permission of WARNER BROS MUSIC Little Town So long this little town was my whole world: Deep sky. low-lying hills, and waters purled. My home now wears an unfamiliar face; New owners always want to change a place. The faces that I loved are there no more: A modern shop replaced the country store The small schoolhouse has long outgrown its need; New buildings stand where farmers planted seed. Beloved old church has fallen to decay: The white spires of a new one greet the day. All is not changed; the hills remain the same: The sunset dies with well-remembered flame The sun-baked slopes still yield the ripened gram; The cows trudge to the pasture, down the lane And when the valley dons its cloak of white. The lights glow in the darkness of the night. But most of all. when lilacs drip with rain. My memories and my heartstrings they enchain 12 1979 was the year of the disco: disco music and disco dancing. Satin was the big look, fashions consisted of loose blouses and dresses, clogs, scarfs, and straight-legged jeans. Grease was the word in movies. Other favorites were: Heaven Can Wait, Almost Summer, Animal House, and Take Down. r 1. Lisa Thomas Jodi George say, Calm down Jamie there are no such things as flying saucers in the gym.” 2. His duties consisted of: supervising staff members and student activities, developing meaningful curriculum, providing discipline, maintaining the budget, and making final decisions. Through his able direction, our school is kept in smooth working order. We, the students, appreciate the time and effort he spends on our behalf. 20 Mr. Swinburne Mr. Wakefield As counselor, Mr. Wakefield has one of the most important jobs in the school. He helps the sophomores adjust to new schedules; helps juniors fulfill class requirements; and assists the seniors in planning ahead for the future. Kinder Being employed as an educator in Emery County School District for the past 30 years has made Superintendent Kinder a strong advocate for education in our county. His educational career has placed him in a variety of educational positions. Mr. Kinder began as a teacher at Emery and Huntington Elementaries and at North Emery High. Later he became principal of Huntington Elementary, North Emery High and Emery County High School. In recent years Mr. Kinder has been a supervisor and superintendent of Emery County Schools. Being born, raised and educated in Emery County has made Superintendent Kinder a conscientious and effective administrator; one who is both sensitive and responsive to the many recent changes that have effected education in our county. We as students of Emery County High School feel it a privilege to have a superintendent of the caliber of Mr. Kinder. 25 Jamie Cox, Studentbody President: True success can only come from within. What you get out of your high school years depends on you. Cherish this time. Get involved; participate in all the school activities. I have really enjoyed being studentbody president this past year because of the fine students and faculty we have in our high school. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to serve you. 26 Mr. Johansen, Student Council Advisor STUDENT COUNCIL Lisa Thomas, Social Committee Chairman; Wayne Humphrey, Social Committee; Tammie George, Head Cheerleader; Sandra Law, Secretary; Glyn Ussery, Vice President; Jamie Cox, President; Deanna Grey, Historian; Nan Jensen, Social Committee; Jodi George, Reporter. The task of producing the school newspaper, the Spartan Shield, was assigned to the Journalism class. They spent many hours planning, editing, and printing newspaper editions that provided something entertaining for everyone. This was a big responsibility, and we feel they have done a good job. A disco dance was held. During the dance students participated in various games and races. Many new friends were made and everyone had fun. — r The girls who participated in the powder puff game found that it was worth their hard after school practice. Both teams played rough, and had a lot of spirit. The Seniors finally won the game with a score of 20 to 14. The Lettermen provided the audience with a hilarious half-time drill. POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL HOMECOMING 78 88 Reminiscing ... “Reminiscing” was the theme for the Homecoming '78 activities. Part of the fun was Spirit Week — ending with an assembly announcing the Royalty. Various clubs, organizations, and each class was represented in the parade. Students spent many after school hours designing and decorating their floats. The Royalty float won first place, followed second by the Lettermen's, and the Senior’s float finished third. The highlight of the week was the traditional Homecoming football game played against North Sanpete. The mighty Spartans played hard, but were defeated 20 to 6. A dance was held afterwards. Carousel” This spring the drama and music departments combined to present the exciting Rodger's and Hammerstein's musical. 'Carousel This production revealed a strange and beautiful love story set in a small town on the coast of Maine in 1873 Billy Bigelow, a handsome and proud barker for the Carousel in a local amusement park (played by Barry Brundage) and Julie Jordan, a lovely, young factory worker (portrayed by Colette Powell), fall in love and run away together. When they return, married, they face a hostile town. From this point the play takes various turns until Billy is accidentally killed in a robbery attempt and the story ends in a touching scene when Billy returns to earth fifteen years later to help his lovely young daughter. Led by All-Region runnmgback Glyn Ussery. the Seniors provided the leadership to help Sophomores and Juniors all work together. The team played many close games and despite a season short on wins, learned to be better individuals through team work. Many on the team began football during the summer as they traveled to a football camp in Denver and attended weight-lifting. Football began in August with the State champion Millard Eagles. Off to a tough start, the Spartans didn't quit but continued to work hard for Coaches Layne Moody. Steve Murdock. Tiny Owings. Clyde Rasmussen, and Randy Mellor. The team finally ended their season with the spring Athletic Banquet at which Seniors were honored and received their letters. 106 Steve Murdock. Assistant Coach; Layne Moody Head Coach. On the field, they always gave their opponents strong competition and played like a winning team. The team played their best game against Delta winning 24 to 4. The young Spartans felt many disappointments this year but played with a winning attitude. Even when they came up short of points and suffered defeat, they showed an attitude of a winner. Next year should be a fine year for them. Quarterback Rick Truman keeps the option. Football During Emery's mighty game with Richfield an exciting thing occured. In the parking lot someone hit a power pole with their truck, causing a complete blackout of the stadium While power was being restored, the band played for the crowd underneath the score board, which was the only available light. ffrTFfl 109 BASKETBALL Back Row —Alan Peacock. Second team All State This year's Spartan squad strived for a goal of excellence which led them to the achievements of third place in region and seventh in state. Positive attitude, determination, and dedication brought them to the state playoff's, a goal that Spartan territory has long foreseen. The Spartan hoopsters, captained by Head Coach Lee Holmstead and Assistant Coach Steve Murdock, played high potential basketball all year long. Holmstead felt this year's winning season is only the beginning of a dynasty for Spartan basketball. Community and fan support was praised by Coach Murdock who said. Support of our team this year was a great benefactor to our success. It boosted the whole team's mental attitude and we re very grateful for it.” Crowd support was only one aspect of our winning season. The mam reason was the amount of talent shown by the stalwart starting five: Geno Lucero. Todd Jeffs. Chad Young. Alan Whitaker, and Brent Grant, who were backed by the super subs: Jamie Cox. Alan Peacock. Jeff Sitterud. and Rod Cooper. These men. along with a lot of sweat and hustle, were able to grasp a 14-9 win-loss record. The season closed with a record which Emery has only been able to dream of in the past, now instead of dreams we have memories of one of the most winning seasons Emery High School basketball has had in years. 112 Norman Richardson, Kent Jorgensen, Dee Christensen, Ken Chynoweth, David Law, Brett Leamaster, Dave Scoggins, Sam Longoria, Rick Truman, Steve Murdock, coach J.V. The Spartans led by hurler Geno Lucero, 3rd baseman Shane Potter, and 1st baseman Mike Scovill, got off to a winning spot but ended with a five-game losing streak. In addition to the many school activities that occurred, the events and people of our nation and world made the year significant. We witnessed, for example, an encouraging move toward world peace when the U S. and China opened formal relations, and Egypt and Israel signed a landmark treaty (much to the consternation of other Arab states.) On the opposite side of the peace movement: China invaded North Vietnam, the Shah was disposed in Iran, the infamous Idi Amin was overthrown in the African state of Uganda, and a heated debate took place between the U.S. and Russia over the production of the neutron bomb. On the economic side (which was not bright at all) there was skyrocketing inflation (8.2% for 1978 and continuing to rise into 1979). and the beginnings of a nation-wide gas shortage that revealed itself in California with outrageously long gas lines (gas prices 4 U J w rP sate' 142 Of 79 in Emery County at the end of the school year reached over 80 t a gallon). In December the mass-suicides at Jonestown. Guyana shocked us all. and in March the accident at the nuclear plant at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania made us wonder about the safe use of atomic power. This year was also the year of the two popes. John Paul I. reigning only thirty days before his untimely death, and Pope John Paul II the first Polish pope in history. Finally. Muhammed All successfully regained his heavyweight title from Leon Spinks; Patty Hearst was pardoned; Superman made his movie debute; the sun did an eclipse for us; three American balloonists successfully crossed the Atlantic: and the world celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Albert Einstein. Truely the year of 78-'79 was a year worth reminiscing about. 143 144 5 i am a person just like anyone else, i have feelings, crying over nothing but sometimes everything- i am part of life which i am trying to live, i am conquering some problems in an endless battle, who cares? i am what i am.
