Advisor The castles of our valley though mute they stand--stal- wart against the sky, breathe courage, strength and endur- ance to us who scan the west- ern horizon. As our winds re- verberate around their rugged ' bases, they echo to us tales of other lands and peoples - tales of the ancient Greeks - where high on a windy hill the Spar- tans of old with their great military organization stood steadfast against her enemies and brought honor and valor to her citizens. If die castles of our valley could but whisper, they might say that someday this valley may be filled with teeming cities for them to watch over even as the Acropolis watched over the cities of ancient Greece. Yes, our castles belong to the ages, but we belong to to- morrow. Let us emulate their steadfastness and make tomor- row one of great promise. Catherine and Vern FOREWORD Administration 5 near Orangeville TABLE OF CONTENTS EMERY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL School Colors: Grey, Gold and Black School Symbol: Spartan SPARTAN Like the Spartans of old, we are brave, valiant and true. Our armor untarnished, our standards we hold high. The gold will show our bravery; the spark of grey shines true. For valor bold the black will stand; hear now our battle cry ! Like the Spartans of old, no friend we'll deny. We are warriors strong in battle; we're from Emery County High. We will defend our ideals with all our heart and zeal; See our shields held high, thrust them toward the sky; Spartans march to victory ! Like the Spartans of old, no friend we’ll deny. We are warriors strong in battle; We're from Emery County High. Supt. Orson W. Peterson Spartans: I would like to remind each student at Emery County High School that even tho’ you are attending a fine school with a competent faculty, every man is his own most important teacher. He is the only one who knows what he really accepts and what he really thinks. Since you are your own most important teacher, try to do the best you can for yourself and do your own par- ticular task well. I hope you are continually challenged to use the time of which you are master, as well and possibly better than those times in which your activities and thoughts are supervised and directed by a teacher. Sincerely, Orson W. Peterson Emery County School District Dennis E. Nelson Supervisor Vada W. Law Lunch Supervisor Virginia Leger School Nurse Lecta Olsen Secretary P.T.A. The publishing of the yearbook is an exercise of this freedom. There are numerous opportunities in school and in everyday life as we grow up to practice and learn the meaning of freedom and the responsibilities that accompany this privilege. As we goto press this year, we are confronted by the fact that despite the many efforts to obtain peace, our nation is involved in a negotiated war. Two hundred thousand Americans are now fighting in Viet Nam and it is expected that this figure will double in the near future. While this is taking place, many so-called American citizens are busily fighting the draft and at the same time fighting to deprive many citizens of their rights as free citizens. I hope that we as Americans will constantly evaluate ourselves and our values and feelings for freedom and see that we are doing our part as citizens of a great country; may we accept our responsibility and do our partto pro- tect all these freedoms we enjoy.
