I I What was so special about 1968? For Emersonians, it was another year, but for the graduating class of'68 it was a very special year, the year in which they left the relatively sheltered atmosphere of school and entered the world of adults. Many were to find that the problems ofjob-hunting were effectively settled for them by their draft board. Others, going through a change of attitude, were accepted for further schooling by technical institutes and colleges. Sometimes during the year, most of the seniors visited the guidance counseloris office and filled out a form - their eighteenth birthday had arrived and to comply with the Selective Service law they registered for The Services, just as so many of their predecessors had done. Over the years, Emersonians have distin- guished themselves, their families, their community and their school in many ways. Conspicuously, the call to serve their country has never gone unanswered. It is to our graduates - past - present and future - that we dedicate this book. The,past has shown us the way, the present is following their example, hopefully future graduates will continue to follow in their foot- steps. Like many of his classmates, Hopkins signs - one hundred eighty-six Emersonians from the last two classes are already serving. 2
