Tl-IE REGIONAL PLAY-OFF This year Stevens Point had to win only one game to go to the state tournament. They did this in the game in which Bob Olk scored a long one from the middle of the Rapids floor to put Point on the long end of an 18 to 17 score. Point lead all the way until about a minute was left to play and Rember dropped in a basket to put Rapids ahead. Bob Olk then grabbed the ball, took aim, and the boys were off to Madison. STATE TOURNAMENT Stevens Point went down to the state tournament with a good team and high hopes. They were first matched with Madison East whom they had defeated earlier in the season. The Point five started out with a very fast type of ball that kept Madison guessing. Ringdahl's men held the lead against hard fought opposition all through the first half. The half ended with Point 18, Madison 12, ln the sec- ond half the Pointers made four goals and three free throws while their op- ponents made only two goals. At the final gun the score was 29 to 16 in favor of Stevens Point. In the second round of the tournament the Pointers met the highly touted Beloit quintet. This was the team that had beaten them two years before. The score seesawed back and forth the entire first half. The score at the end of that half was Point 18 and Beloit 16. In the second half the Pointers started to make headway, helped by the brilliant playing of Knudtson, Stein, and Bandow. The famed Hooks Leffingwell and Eddie Polglaze made up Beloit's scoring combination and with a brilliant attack carried Beloit ahead. With two minutes to go Point closed the gap to 35-33. Simonis missed a side shot and Fisher's short shot rimmed the hoop and rolled out as the game ended with the Pointers still on the short end of the score. Beloit then met a great Rhinelander team and beat them by a large score for their state championship. The Point team was recognized for their brilliant ball playing and Knudtson was named on the All-State team. PAGE 91
