AN INQUIRY UPON THE HISTORY OF SPECIMEN '32 fbeing a report of the results of a scientific investigation extending over a period of four years.J OIJAY is an age of harsh reality-an age when the whole world is facing facts. And I, as an historian of the highest order. feel it my duty to reveal to you the hypothesis of transcendental truth concerning the class of '32 To begin with, we were not an extraordinary class. In fact, were I to extract from the despairing faculty their earnest opinion, I should probably have to tell you that we were most ordinary. There was nothing to distinguish us from any class which had gone before, nor, for that matter, from any which will follow. In our first year we were too young, too unversed in the art of evading duty to escape from the arduous labor entailed upon us by the undue influence of our teachers. So we struggled on until our second year came. About that time the faculty were losing their infiuential abilities, and We suffered a decided reaction. Our beloved in- structors were becoming desperate. Mr. Spaulding's addresses to the class were fre- quent occurrences. Of course, I could have explained the singular actions of the stu- dents, but alas! I was not asked. So the mystery remained unsolved. VVhen our Junior year came we felt that since our intellect was already so far in advance of our years, we ought to be superior to the onslaught of English literature, U. S. history, solid geometry, and the various other forms of drudgery our instructors imposed upon us. But after all, what can one expect? The faculty are of the opinion that all we come to school for is to work. IfVere I to follow the well-worn footsteps of the class historians who have gone before me, I should. with words of extravagant description, waste precious pages tdo you know how much a page in a yearbook costs'?J in immortalizing the Prom and the Junior Play. But, as a herald of the truth, I must disclose the fact that they were no betterAno worse-than thousands of others throughout the land. VVe passed then, to our fourth and last year beneath the roof of our Alma Matern fhackneyed.J Feeling that we had worked our instructors much too hard during the past three years, we decided to take only one solid, so that they could have a rest. fEver-considerate studentsll During oui' Senior year Emerson made a splendid athletic record and the customary comments would be that such marvelous victories could be due only to the extraordinary abilities of the Seniors. But of course, the major part of all the teams were lower classmen, so I can claim no stupendous achievements for my fellow students. I would like to tell you that our Senior Play was a huge success, but as yet there is only the probability that it will be: and, as an historian, I am not able to prophesy. We can only hope-and, certainly it is not a question over which an Emerson student should lose any sleep. For the same reason, I can tell you nothing about the Senior Farewell. This is the middle of April-the Scrapbook goes to press within a few daysithe Farewell is in Juneedraw your own conclusions. Page Eighty-six
