7 CHANGE OF OFFICE In June, 1967, The Emerson Family bid farewell to a dear and respected friend and President, Dr. S. Justus McKinley. Quietly we closed the pages of fifteen happy and fruitful years during which time Dr. McKinley had watched the Emerson Family grow and prosper. He would now retire — knowing that we were as pleased with him as he was with us. And in his place came a young man, Richard Chapin, the seventh president of Emerson College. We were curious. Who was this man? A Harvard Business School Assistant Dean with a long list of credits, a pretty wife, and a wonderful smile. So we smiled too. And we talked with him, and we questioned him, and we laughed with him. And somehow we knew he was going to be just fine. We were ready to adopt a new President — a “father” for our “family”. We knew that with our young minds and his young ideas that we could grow together in a youthful harmony that would make our family just a little bit better. And we will. . . .
