EMERSON COLLEGE 130 BEACON STREET. BOSTON. MASSACHUSETTS 02116 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT June, 1966 Dear Emersonians : At our approaching Eighty-sixth Commencement you, the Class of 1966, will change your status and role in our Emerson College family from student to alumnus. Four years of hope and effort by you, the faculty a nd administration have been directed toward this Convocation where you will receive your well earned degrees. Yet with all our rejoicing we approach this day with some sadness be- cause it means we will no longer be working together in classroom and activities. These have been years of growth; growth in your understand- ing, knowledge, skills and capacity for communication and leadership; growth in the facilities of your College and in the range and quality of the educational experiences available on campus. The Class of 1966 has helped to shape and direct that growth and thus left an in- delible imprint on your College. We live in an era which demands growth on the part of individuals and of institutions. This is the great burden of our age. If we in the twentieth century can learn to use the ever in- creasing flood of new knowledge and new technology, you, in your life time, can climb to heights undreamed of today. But failure to grow enough to contain and direct these potent forces will produce violent and explosive adjustments which can mean not only personal disaster but the end of mankind. Your yet unused potential for growth in appreciation, in insight, in creative expression, in human relations and in leadership represent both your opportunity and your responsibility. Men and women with the capacity for communication and for leadership in adjust- ment to change will be increasingly needed in your life time. But the growth in capacity for communication and leadership must be accompanied by a growth in the understanding of the meaning of integ- rity. The breakdown in the development of integrity and personal responsibility is the great threat to our ever more interdependent society. So my wish for you is that you may see ever more clearly the meaning of integrity in your professional standards, in your family relations, in your life as a citizen and as a member of a community. We on campus will follow your careers with pride and pleasure and look forward to your reunion visits. We will count on your playing your full part in the work of the Alumni Associa- tion and are confident that through the united efforts of our Emerson family our College as well as the Class of 1966 will con- tinue to develop the capacities needed to take advantage of its opportunities and fulfill its responsibilities in this dynamic age. Sincerely yours.
