PREFACE Each year, it becomes the task of the graduating class to appraise itself in the preface of the Emersonian. Too often, this appraisal has concerned itself with the conquering of the world beyond Beacon Street. Too often, the graduat- ing class has believed itself, by virtue of its four years at Emerson, to be the logical successors to the leaders of that world beyond Beacon Street. Each year, the graduating class seems to forget that, for the most part, the world selects its leaders from the numberless ranks of followers who have been doing their jobs to the best of their ability. Let this be our appraisal and our pledge. We, the graduating class of 1961, realize that we are replacing the formal education of Emerson with the more demanding education of the world beyond Beacon Street. We are aware that our new instructors are not the gentle profes- sors of Emerson, but, rather, the stern taskmasters of the world, interested in performance, not potential. Knowing this, we pledge ourselves to this new area of learning. Further, we acept the position of follower, until we have learned to be leaders. If, then, we are found to be fit for the job of leading, we will accept it with humility toward those who have trained and guided us, and with the understanding which this leadership requires.
