Banquets Create an Active Interest. The food is good and so is the company! The Elyrian and Herald Staff members enjoy interesting conver- sations following the meal and after dinner speech. The banquets in the spring are a sign of the school year drawing to a close. Almost every organization sponsors a dinner or some type of recreational activity. The programs are perhaps the most important part of the banquet. A speaker must be invited in advance, a toast master is appointed, and a theme is chosen. Even though a great deal of planning is required, time is the only element involved and the result is usually a very successful program and an enjoy- able evening. Each year Iatin Club holds a Roman Ban- quet. The officers and more accomplished members.of the group are waited on hand and foot by slaves. The masters bid for their slaves at an auction which precedes the banquet. The new editors of the Elyrian, Dawn Schnur and D5ug Fox, and of the Herald, Sharon Stamitti and Ivan Braun, receive congratulations from Mr. Martin Katz. Being speaker at the Publication's Banquet, he gave the staffs a look into the everyday life of a typical newspaper reporter.

Assemblies Arouse School Spirit. In the spring when the school activi- ties begin to mount and the climax of the year draws near, a number of assem- blies are presented by various groups. On assembly days the school spirit is greatly intensified and everyone seems to be passing the word to his friend. Soon the bell rings and the gymnasium fills with the spirit and anxiousness of the students. The band plays the fight song and everyone comes to their feet. Then the noise, not the excite- ment, dies down and leaves way to the speaker. The assemblies are an import- ant part of school life, a growing part which will be remembered in the years to come. Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Step right up and see the amazing muscle-man, Ed Bootle, This was only one attraction in the Dis- tinction Day program presented for last year's graduating seniors. Bill Miller grimaces under the weight of a five pound barbell. The boys aren't the only ones to receive awards, and the girls prove it at the Spring Sports Assembly as Mrs. Newell hands a certificate to a proud winner. 22 i If Lee Johnson ever counted his trophies he would no doubt discover that he has enough for his own private trophy case. One more is proudly added with a firm hand and hearty congratulations from Mr. Richinbau, Elyria High's Varsity Basketball Coach.
