To You We Dedicate This Book, Miss Baker. Nina Baker In dedicating the 1960 Elyrian to Miss Baker, teach- er at E.H.S. from 1928 to 1959, we not only pay tribute to a distinguished career but to the spirit that has motiva- ted her work. The spirit may be called the pursuit of ex- cellence. And truly a pursuit it has been, for excellence has no limits, like Tennyson's ideal goal: . . . all but in Heaven Hovers The Gleamf' It was a light Miss Baker glimpsed early and has followed with unflagging purpose. A single line in a play was often rehearsed again and again, the drawing of a curtain in a climactic scene was practiced carefully, a just- right prop might be searched for all over town. But the finished product demonstrated the value of such attention to minute details. The many students who worked with her in the fifty- four plays she directed at E.H.S. and hundreds in her classes found the spirit contagious, and when they ex- perienced the pleasure of work well done, they felt the price was not too high to pay. Many students speak of the life-long interest in dra- matics her enthusiasm kindled and the respect for in- tegrity her attitudes inspired. Thus in dedicating this Elyrian to Miss Baker, we salute the pursuit of excellence with Tennyson's words: After it. follow it, Follow the Gleam.

We Pay Tribute to Miss Coffland. Ida Coffland November 2, 7896 - August 28, T959 During her many years as a teacher of home economics at Elyria High School, Miss Coffland constantly strived for improvement - improvement in herself, in her work, and in her relations with students. She was dedicated to her profession and enjoyed it because she liked people. Working in close contact with her students, with her friends in church, and with teachers or parents, was always a ioy to her. Miss Coffland's examples of serving others was an inspiration to all who knew of them. She had a way of finding beauty in everyday things - working in her garden and sharing the fruits of it. Her kind understanding of the joys and sorrows of her friends and of her students was a part of her life. Her sense of humor was delightful, her patience and loyalty were ever constant. To those who knew her, she was a true friend. As a fitting tribute to Miss Coffland, a home economics department library has been established in her memory by her colleagues, students, and friends.
