Assemblies Supplement High School Education. The colorful western theme of the Lorain assembly highlighted the football pep programs. Neal Schultz narrated as a Hollywood director while Chuck Redington had a few choice remarks of his own. THE ELYRIA HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER All Hail to thee, Elyria High In tribute halt we now. In reverence that's deep and true Our loyal heads we bow. For time can never more destroy The light of mem'ry burning bright. In days to come all through the years, You'll guide us by your light. As forward to our goal we go From scenes and pleasures rare, Our lips must e'er their story tell, Our Hearts fond mem'ries share. And, though the years roll on and on, We hail to her with heart and hand. As first our school rose in the west So first she'll always stand. - Bernice Atkinson Gwin As the last stanzas of our Alma Mater float through the gym, another assembly is coming to a close. Assemblies have two main purposes. Some contribute toward educational developmentg others promote school spirit. Everyone anxiously awaits the first football pep assembly. Expectancy fills the air as E.H.S.'ers wait for the announcement of the queen and her court. Lorain . . . beat em roars from the student body at the annual Lorain assembly. Because of our superior athletic records, the sports awards assemblies have become of maior importance. Heavenly aromas fill the auditorium as representatives from the Gasco Food Institute demonstrate cooking and modern home appli- ances. Interesting speakers give lectures on various topics during the year. The Thanks- giving, Christmas, and Easter programs start off the holidays on a cheery note. Of course, everyone, especially the seniors, looks for- ward to the Senior Chapel, Distinction Day, and National Honor Society assemblies. These represent some of the varied programs pre- sented to E.H.S.'ers throughout the year. We Pay Tribute to Miss Coffland. Ida Coffland November 2, 7896 - August 28, T959 During her many years as a teacher of home economics at Elyria High School, Miss Coffland constantly strived for improvement - improvement in herself, in her work, and in her relations with students. She was dedicated to her profession and enjoyed it because she liked people. Working in close contact with her students, with her friends in church, and with teachers or parents, was always a ioy to her. Miss Coffland's examples of serving others was an inspiration to all who knew of them. She had a way of finding beauty in everyday things - working in her garden and sharing the fruits of it. Her kind understanding of the joys and sorrows of her friends and of her students was a part of her life. Her sense of humor was delightful, her patience and loyalty were ever constant. To those who knew her, she was a true friend. As a fitting tribute to Miss Coffland, a home economics department library has been established in her memory by her colleagues, students, and friends. M . we Because wrestling made its debut at E.H.S. this year, this was an excellent excuse to invite students from Kent State University to demonstrate wrestling techniques. 1 The strong underlying beat of Howard Haskins' drum added depth to the music of the orchestra at the Christmas assembly. The A Cap- pella Choir also appeared in this ioint presentation. After listening attentively to a spirited band number in an upper class assembly, the audience broke out in applause. 'gk
