Perhaps Mr. Beck likes to begin his school day with a humorous skit in an all-school assembly, but at the close, he finds that leading the student body in the Alma Mater is even a more enjoyable way to begin his duties as director of Elyria High's choirs. One of the greatest contributions J. Martin Beck has given to us is the music for our Alma Mater. And so as we close these two pages of glimpses of Mr. Beck, we present . . . THE ELYRIA HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER All hail to thee, Elyria High In tribute halt we now. ln reverence that's deep and true Our loyal heads we bow. For time can never more destroy The light of mem'ry burning bright. In days to come all through the years, You'll guide us by your light. As forward to our goal we go From scenes and pleasures rare, Our lips must e'er their story tell, Our hearts fond mem'ries share. And, though the years roll on and on. TO WHOM WE DEDICATE THIS BOOK . . . Have you ever heard of anyone who has taught in Elyria High School for over one-hundred years? Unless you are in one of Elyria High's four choirs you wouldn't know that this question comes from the lips of J. Martin Beck about every two weeks. But you don't have to be in a choir to know the friendliness of the man to whom we dedicate this book. In our modern society friendship is a price- less commodity. When it is tempered with warmth, understanding, and good humor, it goes Thoughtful . . . and happy, too. For J. Martin Beck a piano can truly be consid- ered a companion, for both have the some interest at heart . . . music. beyond the scope of man and becomes something which time and distance cannot limit. This friendship to youth and age alike has made Mr. Beck an institution in our town and our school. The familiar form, seen from day to day, has brought to thousands of students, not only a better understanding of music, but a better knowl- edge of human nature. And so, in this book, which many will trea- sure in the future years, we will keep the mem- ories we have gathered of you, Mr. Beck.

ASSIGNMENT . . TERM PAPER Above: Along with her fellow classmates Judy Sch- mittgen gets the assignment- a term paper for physics is due in three weeks. This is but the beginning. Below, Left: Judy uses encyclopedias, magazines, and science books to get all the facts and figures that are so necessary to a good report, Below, Right: The world of books is fascinating -- but Judy has only time to look for the ones she needs at the moment, and then back to work. 1' ..gw Term paper . . . three weeks. At some time and in some form these words are heard by every E.H.S. student. Maybe you have heard them recently and know the feel- ing they cause. Your first thought is to say Oh, no! Then you realize that there are others and that you aren't the first one . . . or the only one. So to work, and it starts in the library. Digging, digging, and more dig- ging. The research, the time, and the energy all go into the paper and finally the notes are completed. You just have time to copy over those notes. At last it's done and you have it in. So you wait and no matter what the grade turns out to be, you are satisfied because it is your work, your term paper.
