if Exchange Teacher Comes from Wales MR. THOMAS EVANS As one of the 112 exchange teachers from Great Bri- tain this school year, Mr. Thomas Evans, Headmaster of the County School at Cardigan, Wales is teaching history and social problems in our school while Mr. E. Glenn Baxter of the E. H. S. faculty is teaching in the Welsh school. Mr. Evans has been energetic in several fields of ac- tivity. He started an honours course in theology at St. David's College in 1915, but volunteered for military service during his first year there and saw two and one- half years of active service in the Balkans. After de- mobilization in 1919, he resumed studies at the Uni- versity College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and received B.A. and M.A. degrees there. He is a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society, a Fel- low of the Royal Historical Society, and a member of the Royal Society of Teachers. From 1924 to 1932 he was senior classics master and master in charge of physical training at Queen's School, Bristol. He has been Headmaster of the County School at Cardigan since 1932. He was Mayor of Cardigan in 1944 and 1945. He serves on the Bench of Magistrates and on the Lord Chancellor's advisory committee on the appointment of justices of the peace. He has also served as chairman of the Cardigan and county branches of the British Legion, member of the county juvenile employment committee, member of the Cardiganshire school's reorganization committee, mem- ber of the Cardiganshire Territorial Association, mem- ber of the Carcliganshire County cadet committee, sub area investigator for the Nuffield College social recon- struction survey, founder of the Cardigan Boys' Club, and chairman of the Memorial Hall and Community Center committee. He is the author of Background of Modern Welsh Politics g a contributor to the Bibliography of Welsh History and Makers of Modern Wales , and the writer of Rural Bias in Secondary Schools. During World War II Mr. Evans as a Colonel in the Reserves headed the Home Guard activities in Cardi- ganshire. At Elyria High he has taught classes in American His- tory and in Social Problems. In the northeastern part of Ohio he has responded to almost 100 calls from Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, American Legion, P. T. A., Y. M. C. A., Y .W. C. A., and church groups for addresses. At vacation times he has travelled to the Pacific and Southern states and will, he says, enjoy recalling expe- riences in 35 of the 48 states. He is especially appreciative of the courteous and kind- ly treatment accorded him by Superintendent Eibling and Principal Wilson, he says.
