Sew 7mfwov 'In Thcee Decades During the more than 29 years that Mr. S. S. Rockwood has served as clerk of the local Board of liducation he has had opportunity to observe the Educa- tional progress of the city at close range. He retires August 31. The number of students and teachers in the Elyria Public Schools has doubled. XYhen he became clerk on May 3, 1909, the system had 80 teachers and approximately 2500 students. The payroll for last month showed 160 teach- ers. The students enrolled this year total 4674. Three superintendents have headed the school system during Mr. Rockwood's service: XX R. Comings, F. M. Shelton, and the present R. C. Maston. Mr. Rockwood has seen the erection of seven new school buildings--Edison, Gates. lily. Allen. Garford. Technical, and Roosevelt. He has seen the remodel- ing of jefferson and VVashington Ruildings and new additions built at Hamilton and Franklin. Many services have been added to the schools during Mr. Rockwood's time, but even then lflyria's school system was in the lead in two branches which have since become an important part of almost all high schools. These branches are manual training and home economics. Mr. Comings, then superintendent, was a strong advocate of these branches. The work was done by hand then however. as there was no machinery such as is to be found in the high school today. VVl1en Mr. Rockwood became clerk in 1909. the offices of the board were in the old building at Court and Second Streets. Later they were moved to the third floor of the Masonic Temple, and then to the present quarters in the Wash- ington building. ln 1009 the members of the board were George ll. Chamberlain, John blur! ltach, Judge l.ee Stroup, Dr. C. H. Cushing, and P. H. lloynton. Before becoming clerk of the local board, lXlr. Rockwood had been con- nected with the Savings Deposit llank and Trust Company. His son, Rodney, is now executive vice president at that bank. On May 24 the teachers and administrators of the school system tendered Mr. Rockwood a banquet at the lilyria Country Club. Mrs. Rockwood, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Rockwood. and Miss Gertrude Rockwood were also guests. X 1- , M5133-' 'I .N me ,A W 'A f l. 3 -
