Atlantis Flanked by nautical decorations in keeping with the Atlantis theme, students attending the 1973 prom entered the undersea world through a submarine called Nautilus complete with live fish outside the portholes. As the prom goers entered, they were escorted by sailors. Larry Mitchum's Band was seated on the stage which was decorated with fishnet and festoons, colored balls and watery streamers. Couples passed through a shipwreck to the refreshment area. This was a pirate's cove featuring a giant treasure map, Charlie Tuna, a mermaid and Captain Hook. Sophomore girls dressed as pirates served treats to guests. Last year's queen Kaori Gardner crowned 1973 queen Kay Weddell, who was seated on a giant sea shell throne. Kay's escort was Mark Bollinger. Honor attendants were Candy Gootee, Bobbie Florea, Vickie Freund, and Diana Shephard. Prom chairpeople were Jane Church and Julie Wire. Committee heads were Cassie Wilson, Teresa Wardwell and Tracie Slayton. Prom queen 1973, Kay Weddell, reigns over an aquatic world, Atlantis. 13

and Defeat Although a steady rain cancelled the Homecoming parade, foul weather didn’t dampen the spirits of Panther fans who braved rain and cold winds. The new stadium was almost filled with loyal fans sporting umbrellas and winter coats. Although the floats were not shown, they were judged. The Class of 74 won first for the second year in a row. Their winning float character was Dumbo and the theme was Flying High to Win. The sophomores won second place. Their float was a take off of the three little pigs and their theme was Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Blue Devils. Last year’s queen, Christy Hood, crowned the 1973 queen, Kathy McClelland. Here attendants were Sara Hobbs, Mary Hook, Nancy Robertson, and Cindy Barker. The day's festivities were dedicated to the Class of 1923. Elwood lost a hard fought game to C.I.C. champs Tipton Blue Devils by a score of 14-0.
