The Maypole number featured a forty-foot maypole, twenty Parisian girls, and the stirring music of a can-can. We Polished it for the Variety Show All of the planning that goes into a billion-dollar Broadway production went into the 1959 Panther Band Variety Show. Many months of preparation were put into the two performances which were given on April 2nd and April 3rd. The gymnasium was filled to capacity as the audiences thrilled to the professional beauty of the costumes, lighting, and scenery. It seemed unbelievable that high school students could produce a show that Joyce Williams played the beautiful Dream of Ol-wen, accompanied by the band. would literally take its audience around the world in less than 80 minutes. Three popular acts were: The Maypole number, the Dixieland Seven, and Mr. Brugger singing Old Man River. The 1959 Varieties will be remembered for years to come. The Panther Band and all the band auxiliaries deserve the heartiest congratulations for a job truly well done! With Bob Doan at the guitar, Mary Ann Cannon sings, Come Back to Sorrento. 15

We Threw Away Culture for Sadie Hawkins Pandemonium reigned the night of November 21st, when the Panther Den was haunted by pig-tailed, frecklefaced, desperate bachelor gals and raggedy-clad, side-burned, eligible men. Marryin1 Sam --better known as Jerry Robison--imparted his final instructions and deepest sympathy before the minute hand of the clock reached 8:30. Then panic stricken males made a headlong dash for the hills with the man-crazed females not far behind them. Some were roped and hog-tied; some were dragged; others came peacefully across the finishing line where Marryin' Sam met them with a smile, a marriage license, and a short civil ceremony--all for a modest fee. However, the spirit-broken captives soon lost their downcast attitudes as they purchased their kissing licenses and spend the rest of the evening . . . w-e-1-1- . . . This lovely couple, Winnie Shaw and Jeff Mays just got hitched by that fancy dude with the cigar, Martin' Sam, alias Jerry Robison. 14
